If you come, they will build it.

Dan Mullen says he’s found college football’s secret sauce.

“That’s how it works,” a frustrated Mullen said. “I’m gonna be honest with you, this is how it works too, when we sell out the stadium, we win a championship. It doesn’t go the other way. It’s not we win, you sell out. You sell out, you win. Go watch teams that have built programs. That’s how it works.”

If that’s really the case, why not give tickets away to make sure you fill the place every week?  If that’s really the case.

Yeah, but what does Timmy have to say about it? Looking forward to the rant about kids on social media being why the Gators aren’t winning championships.

Shouldn’t Timothy be a professional at this point in his broadcasting career, and not a cheerleading former player? Everyone knows he played at FU but he seems to not have grown since graduating and traveling the country.

It is the SEC Network, should other programs not have the right to expect some professionalism and balance from a forum that operates under the umbrella name for 14 teams? Marcus Spears seems to get it, Maria gets it, who is evaluating Timmy’s performance?

Gets old. When Laura Rutledge gave the stats for the Ga?FU series before the game in JAX, she only cited the stats since 1990. No mention of the past 8 years being 4-4, or UGA leading the all time record. How do they get to do that biased slice of info and have it both ways on the conference network? Now she has the bod to not make me as bitter as the Tebow slant, but come on, man.

Let’s step our game up SEC, because it does matter more. I stopped watching Gameday due to the WWL’s bias, why should I have to watch it on the home area broadcast? Of course, FBomb sets the tone for bias, perhaps that is what gives them the right.

Amen to that!!!!!!!!!! Maria was the best & most professional host. Laura is smart, but she’s still just glorified eye candy.

      • It’s not an agenda or bias, they’re just lazy and work off of the previous year’s notes. Not much changes year or year, so it just keeps getting recycled.

Not sure if the network is behind the bias, it would be hard for the staffers to fight off Tebow, or say not to Laura to anything. I am putting it clearly on them for arranging those stats in a biased way, but the network should make sure it doesn’t happen again. It was 4-4 over the last eight, it will be 5-5 in the last decade (maybe 6-4), it might be just one more year but the narrative of “ancient history” has been blown away. Time for everyone to move along, all the relevant characters from the 90s are long gone. I have now heard FU has now won 3 of the last 5 ignoring the 5 UGA wins bracketing those last five. Liars figure, amirite?

It’s the whole State of FL, I promise you (I live in Tampa and travel all over) that they (media, stores etc.) brainwash everyone here to only see teams from the State. You can’t go to any store and buy merch from another team that’s from outside this State especially FL. School teams, you wont see logos from the State of GA. I can’t even catch a Falcons game down here (on cable)! Florideans live in a fantasy world, when it comes to football, it started in 1990 and all they’re programmed to know is that they’ve always competed for championships every single year since their beginning. My bad for the rant, so great to be a Dawg and especially down here!

          • Just based on his reactions/interactions on (and off) the field the past few weeks, I think he feels required to be a bigger personality than is comfortable to bring attention and attitude and momentum back to Gainesville. I could be wrong, but I don’t remember him being Super Douche Coach yelling at the other team/coaches and dancing on the sideline in Starkville. Maybe he is being himself, but if not, that’s a bad place to be in Year 1.

He’s the same guy he was at State. Just a different colored visor.

He’s competent and a winner. That said, winning with an underdog is a lot different that winning at a front-runner. I’d say he still has to prove he can out-recuit Saban, Kirby, Richt, Gus, and Taggart for the horses he’ll need to win at UF. ESPECIALLY now that we’re where we’re at.

I know I wasn’t saying he wasn’t competent, nor that he cannot win. I was referring to his personality and “little man” attitude that cannot allow him to say when he is just beaten. Not sure how that now staying real will play out, and his not being likable will work with recruiting—although Urbie was despised by AD staffers as well. There is also a different kind of personna of athletes that end up in Gainesville, different from Starkville. The thug factor is higher, he may have been in Gainesville before, but he wasn’t the guy who had to manage things when the late night call comes. We will see. If his defense stays talented, and he finds his QB, they will be a handful.

He definitely dies fit right in. I live in Jacksonville and one of the local sports radio stations has a weekly gator report show that has Mullen and another guy talking about the past weeks game and the game coming up. So this past week I just happened to listen in for a bit during a drive across town because I enjoy me some gator tears as much as the next Dawg. The delusional thoughts that come out of Mullen’s mouth regarding the ass whipping they took in Jax is almost sad. The best thing he mentioned was of course about the goal line stand they made in the 2nd half. According to Mullen, that stand consisted of 8 plays (in reality there were 6) and ended with the Dawgs getting 0 points. I bet by next year in Jax the story will be about the miraculous 27 play goal line stand that ended with the gators getting 17 points.

At some point he has to understand along with Pittman. there is a X and O issue inside the 5 … 8 plus plays in back to back games… and the Dawgs have trouble pushing it across the goal line.
Hint, use that frosh QB. He saw one play earlier in the season.

Winning consistently at Mississippi State is worth something, though, yes? Don’t forget how competitive the West has been–playing that schedule. he’s done more with less than Texas A & M and LSU the last few years…won 9 or more games there four times.

I don’t wanna sound like a Mullen fan–he’s a Gator then and a Gator now, and I hate the Gators. But just objectively-speaking, the guy clearly can coach a little, IMO. No, I don’t think they could have done better given how badly McElwain left things.

Well, but other programs –Arkansas, for example– did not benefit.

Long and short of this: Does gastr1 think Mullen wins an NC at UF? Hell no. He’s not good enough.
Does gastr1 think Mullen wins an SEC Championship at Florida? Only if everyone else is down, but I wouldn’t totally rule it out.
Does gastr1 think Mullen wins 9-10 games consistently and Florida and avoids Boom/McElwain/Zook-like disasters? Yes, I think he does that. And he sticks around a while because of that.

FWIW, Mullen won 10 games once at MSU (a minor miracle, though Dak Prescott certainly helped), 9 games three times, and never lost less than 3 games in a season. He had a 65% winning percentage, nice but nothing Earth-shattering. Plus, his best team let Tech win the Orange Bowl, so I hate him for that alone.

I hope the Gator Nation is miserable with 9-10 wins. I hope Mullen stays for 15 years, gets his ass whipped regularly by one or more of his biggest rivals, has an annual faceplant, scares the shit out of his fanbase by eking out a win over an in-state American Conference opponent, keeps Todd Grantham around far too long, hires a moron as an OC, but can continually keep enough sunshine spread around for Gator Nation to think “This will be the year we win the East” only to have their hopes dashed the last Saturday in October.

You could be right, eethomas. By “a while” I’m thinking 5-9 years. I will submit, though, that if he gets blown out by us every year and can’t beat LSU or some other rival either, it will be the shorter of that range.

I have zero issue with him being UF’s coach because I don’t think we’ll lose to them unless half of our offense is injured. And even then–which half. 🙂
And let’s be honest: he’s perfect. We need them to be competitive while we kick their butts each year– we need that game to be high stakes for the team to be battle-tested, so to speak.

Disagree with none of the above. I never meant he wasn’t competent, nor couldn’t coach a lick. As I said above, he has some personality things that will not allow him to be great, imo, but he will make them better if he can manage the job and makes good coordinator decisions. It isn’t a slam dunk for him just because he did OK in the West. Not only is the East decent, he still has LSU to deal with every year. 🙂 Might have escaped a beating this year, but the Cajuns are a major reason the West has been perceived so highly, even in their off years.
