Observations from the arm chair, Bluegrass edition

In a game involving two top ten teams, you don’t always expect the first series and exchange to set the tone for the entire affair, but that’s exactly what happened Saturday.  Georgia’s defense stuffed Benny Snell to force a punt, which Mecole Hardman returned 65 yards to set up a short scoring drive consisting of three Holyfield runs and a touchdown pass to Nauta.  Kentucky never got closer than 7-3 after that.

Run the ball on offense and stop the run on defense is the SEC’s tried and true formula for winning and Georgia pursued that with a vengeance, out-gaining the ‘Cats in rushing yardage 331 to 84 along the way to a 34-17 victory that didn’t feel as close as the score indicated.  (Some of that due, no doubt, to a couple of sloppy fumbles that blew up scoring opportunities.)

That wasn’t the only general point of interest for me.  Kentucky’s vaunted experience turned out not to be a factor, because (I suspect, as I mentioned pre-game) it wasn’t experience in the particular setting of a big game with serious consequences.  Georgia was the team playing the green kids — lots of ’em, as a matter of fact — but it was the senior laden ‘Cats that looked a little tight and lost their composure on occasion.  Score one for act like you’ve been there before.

And now, your bullet points.

  • I’m sorry, but Kroger Field really doesn’t have the same cachet as, say, Death Valley.
  • I simply can’t get over how well that patched up offensive line played.  Two sophomores, three freshmen, 331 rushing yards, zero sacks, four tackles for loss totaling a mere minus-6 yards.  Can you imagine how nuts Munson would have gone over that performance?  Sam Pittman is a frickin’ wizard.
  • For those of you wondering if Jake Fromm would ever find his Javon Wims replacement, his name is Jeremiah Holloman.  The confidence Fromm has in Holloman is obvious, but he needs to be careful not to overdo it.  On the throw in the endzone where Holloman was covered, Jake had a wide open receiver (Ridley?) on the left side.
  • Nice pass play to Nauta for the first touchdown.  If I’m calling plays for Georgia, next time the offense is on the opponent’s one-yard line, I’m telling one of the offensive linemen to draw a false start penalty to avoid running behind that useless power set.
  • Either that, or keep using Jayson Stanley on the jet sweep.  Nobody saw that coming.
  • Another week of concentrating the carries between Holyfield and Swift, another week of a solid running game.  By Jove, Holmes, I think they’re on to something.  Also good to see Swift getting his share of outlet passes.
  • A Fields sighting this week!  And it wasn’t just for show, either, as he picked up a crucial first down with his feet.  I just wish he hadn’t given up so quickly on his one pass attempt on the day, as it looked like he had a receiver on the right breaking open just as he pulled the ball down.
  • Jake Fromm, game manager.  He may not have been asked to do much, but what he did, he did effortlessly and efficiently.  Quite frankly, it’s good news for Georgia when Fromm doesn’t attempt more than 20 passes in a game.
  • The receivers may not have had that many catches, but you don’t rush for over 300 yards without having some serious downfield blocking in the mix.  They did their part.
  • Kentucky may have had the rep coming in, but it was the Dawgs’ defense with the four sacks on the day.  (Georgia also had more tackles for loss.)  The coaches committed to some of the youngsters (hey there, Tindall and Anderson!) playing early and often and the increased speed from the linebacking position was noticeable.  Hope that’s the start of a trend.
  • That was easily Jonathan Ledbetter’s best game of the season.  If he made a mistake all day, I missed it.
  • I can say the same thing about Brenton Cox (although he may not have been perfect).  He did a nice job of stepping up in D’Andre Walker’s absence.
  • Man, that was some tough luck for Tae Crowder on Kentucky’s only big play of the day.
  • He’s had a rough year in pass coverage, but Natrez Patrick had one brilliant pass break up.  He may have surprised even himself, as he was close to picking it off.
  • They keep going right at Tyson Campbell and he keeps recovering fumbles.  That which does not kill you makes you stronger, young man.
  • Yeah, that was a bullshit pass interference call on Deandre Baker.  Thanks, Hubert and crew.
  • Special teams play was better than it had been in the past couple of games.  Rodrigo was flawless, with one exception on a kickoff.  (I’m beginning to believe the kickoff coverage team is simply too relaxed and reliant on touchbacks for its own good.)  The Hardman punt return set the tone for the day, as I mentioned.  Camarda only had to punt once on the day, but it was a 55-yard beaut with no return.
  • Coaching?  I see the criticism Chaney’s getting in certain quarters, but, jeez, peeps, Kentucky’s defense hadn’t given up more than 20 points or 164 yards rushing in a game all year, Georgia goes for 34 and 331 and some of you want to gripe?  Methinks you’re getting spoiled.
  • There’s a similar story to tell on the defensive side.  Playing a lot of single-safety looks, Georgia held Benny Snell and UK to its second-lowest rushing total of the season.  There was a price to be paid for that, as Wilson notched his best completion percentage of the season, largely by throwing short passes the defense gave him, but most of it was empty yardage.  Tucker made Wilson beat him and Kentucky’s passing attack wasn’t up to the challenge.
  • Kirby deserves a ton of credit for the outcome, too.  For once, he had this team ready to play from the opening kickoff, and it showed as the Dawgs grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it.  No, his team didn’t play a perfect game — the two fumbles cost Georgia some points and the defense appeared to relax a little when it got to 28-3 — but they were better focused than any game I’ve seen them play so far in 2018.  Considering how many underclassmen got significant time on the field in a road game with a division title at stake, Smart did a helluva job on the day.

Now we come to the final quarter of the season, with two traditional rivals and three straight home games before facing the Death Star in the conference championship game.  I am really curious to see how much growth is left to coax out of this team’s young talent in those three games and how Kirby manages it.

Totally agree on the kickoff coverage issue. Our guys seem to assume a touchback and don’t go down field with purpose like they should. Hot Rod has lulled them into complacency. As for the criticism of Chaney, my only gripe is the short goal to go situations. Otherwise, it felt like he called the game that beat a really good defense soundly. And Pittman should get an extension on his contract until he is 75 or so. Don’t ever let him go.

    • I’m in agreement. Play-calling against LSU sucked, and we are inept in short-yardage situations and 2-pt conversions. Over the last two seasons as a whole, though? I’m happy. He’s got work to do, but the results speak for themselves.

Was really thrilled to see Reese, Tindall, Anderson and others making meaningful contributions, and in such a pivotal game at that. Even though Alabama seems to be a “bridge too far”, the experience these guys are getting will be invaluable for next year’s run. Their speed might even help snuff out any chance the nyerds had of running on us… oh yeah, Awburn Sucks!

  3. We all said before the season this team was going to get better as the season wore on. That’s exactly what we’re seeing. Kirby’s recruiting is addressing the injury war of attrition on our depth. All of these talented younger guys are growing up at the right time.

There are some young guys on defense that are going to be stars over the next couple of years.

I said this on the now-dead game thread, but if the Kentucky player who grabbed the ref’s arm and showed his ass on the way to the locker room plays another down this season, it will be coaching malpractice on Stoops’ part. If Kentucky wasn’t entirely out of it by that point, that moment marked their final collapse, and it served them right.

You’re overreacting, as was the referee. It’s an emotional game, and there was jawing going on and the referee grabbed the player first. As a former official myself, I appreciate the need for respecting the officials, but if you don’t want to get touched, don’t touch anyone. There was nothing that happened there that warranted the player being ejected.

Yeah, I thought it was a little weak, too, but we don’t know what was said along with it.

A larger point the Senator pointed out was that the moment (game) was obviously too large for Kentucky. I had that feeling last week given all the talking Kentucky was doing, talking up the game and such. There’s no substitute for experience in these games.

I was amazed at the OL. It’s not just run blocking, as they are built for road grading, no matter their youth. But the pass blocking has been solid, and that involves good technique and footwork. Really incredible with the youth they have. And other than the one errant snap, the center play was great.

Best & deepest OL in decades. I just wish Kirby would do something besides insist on “imposing our will” play after play after play in goal line situations. We’re so predictable that there’s virtually no way the OL can win the battle. The opposing defense doesn’t have to worry about anything but pinning their ears back & coming forward.

We can complain about Chaney all we want but this is a Kirby thing of being more physical. At some point he has to be smarter.

Nice synopsis…also good point on Chaney. Every call does not work, but in the grand scheme of things, hell of a day for our offense. Especially when considering that was the #1 ranked defense (scoring). Also, I believe we only punted 1 time…that is when you know things are working

Haven’t seen it can pointed out anywhere, but I believe that the staff started 2 freshmen linebackers (Tindall & Anderson). I’m guessing the idea was to put some more speed in there, which seemed to work. But boy, Anderson is skinny, gets the job done though. They both can bring the pressure, thinks Tindall also got a sack.

Oh well, they both can put on some weight in the offseason…future looks good there, just need more of them.

LSU’s kickoff coverage unit made it a point to race to the end zone and hype the home crowd. We should adopt the same philosophy.

A few observations from my first trip to UK:
    1. There’s virtually no tailgating on campus-proper, only in the area immediately around the stadium, which made for a hushed, almost-funereal pre-game atmosphere as we walked through campus to the stadium. Campus is beautiful, though, especially this time of year.
    2. For all of the pre-game hype and the presence of SEC Nation, most of the Wildcat fans seemed resigned to losing before the game ever started. At Rupp on Friday, a lady walked by and said, ‘Y’all don’t beat us too bad tomorrow.’ I chalk it up to the effect that years of losing have had to their psyches.
    3. Several fans came up to talk and were almost uncomfortably nice. It was the closest thing I’ve experienced to the unsurpassed Notre Dame hospitality and struck me as especially strange, coming from fans of a team we play every year. On years we play in Jacksonville and Lexington on back-to-back weeks, it makes for a pretty bright contrast. It’s definitely the kind of trip you could take your kids on.
    4. In return, the UGA fans I saw were happy to celebrate together but didn’t rub in the loss to UK fans. They seemed more worthy of pity than derision. Except for the one guy that kept turning around to the UGA section and yelling, “Wait til we beat Duke on Tuesday!” We derided him.
    5. We found a good BBQ joint run by a Dawg fan in Lexington, Willie’s Locally Owned, and it was heavily populated by Dawg people. The pulled pork was outstanding there. All in all, a great trip. Would definitely do it again.

OT again. We looked at houses in WF this spring, really loved the potential of what that downtown area is about to become. Couldn’t believe how hot the entire Raleigh suburban market was. Decided against WF area even though it was our #1 preference. The Falls of Neuse area had some homes we liked but that road into the downtown is going to need some serious expansion in the next few years. Daughter graduated WF Law and the old campus looks a lot like the new. Cool area.

We really love it. Great small town feel, with Raleigh nearby for anything you can’t get in WF. 4 true seasons, 3-4hrs from both beach and mountains, the best of southern culture w/o the worst. But I’ll stop singing its praises too loudly. WF has quadrupled since 1990, and I’d prefer it not get much bigger. Something tells me I’m not going to get my wish, though.

Agreed, very family friendly. We took our 5 month old to the game and it was absolutely perfect for that. The area west of the stadium and back into the college neighborhood had some pretty rowdy pregame festivities going on. I think every other house in that Elizabeth neighborhood and on Nicholsville Rd is a clone of the old chi phi house on lumpkin. Even for a college area, there seemed to be a disproportionally high number of old beautiful houses that had become rundown–I think every kid at UK could live in an early 20th century mansion if they wanted to.

I actually prefer Kentucky’s tailgating setup, because the stadium is not in the heart of campus it allows for parking all around the stadium so it’s a relatively short walk inside from the tailgate. It is one of my favorite road destinations all around, but I was a bit bummed they didn’t keep the move to September on this year’s schedule, because it’s always better in September. Plus Keeneland.

I am glad you had such a good experience here! 🙂

I disagree with you only about Willies Locally Owned. I have eaten there twice and both times the food was terrible, the live music was obnoxiously loud (they even have live music at 10am on Sundays during brunch….. wtf?), and the service has always been terrible.

Also, that brunch I mentioned… we were the ONLY table in the restaurant (a party of 20, a friend was in town for his mom’s funeral and we all went to brunch with him) and we asked our waiter if he could ask the musicians to turn the amplifiers down a bit. They musicians were so butthurt they turned it up. And the manager did nothing about it.

I agree that the youth is coming on nicely. Their inconsistency earlier in the season was really expensive but I think I’m comfortable with thinking they currently only cost us about 10 points per game. (The way I see it viewing from 30,000 feet, not literally offensive points but more like a overall average)

Our son looked at Kentucky. Campus is lovely and we enjoyed the people and the area around the campus felt much like Athens. I’ve actually been rooting for the Cats. While their arrogance in basketball is annoying, they have always been (over-all) class people to be around.

They’ll beat UT next week (playing Georgia will help them) and go to a nice bowl in the sunshine state. Guessing the Outback. Not bad for a tradiitonal door mat.

With that said, “lots of seniors” on this team. I think they’ll take a step back next year…

Regarding our Dawgs – I think you touched on just about everything that needs to be touched. Swift is now close to 100% and boy does it show. “Thunder and Lightning” 2.0 is now here and I think you’ll see that be the difference maker through the balance of the schedule.

If they beat UT, all they have left is MTSU and Louisville. 10-2 will get them a better bowl than the Outback. We should be rooting for UK and LSU (they play at Tex A&M to close the regular season) to lose at least one more so there’s no doubt they fall behind us in the bowl pecking order if we win the next 3 and lose to Bama for our 2nd loss. The SEC title game loser has a tendency to get screwed because the bowls might view them as too disappointed to travel well for the bowl game.

    A few nuggets from me:
If we can coach Campbell up to get his head around, those PIs will start turning into picks. I think that’s really close. Please can we get this by Bama?

Can we get an open records request for the transcript of what Kirby said into the headset after another goal line stuff?

Agreed Fields ran too fast. Either those were called or he needs more experience and patience. I’m hoping he can get both before Bama.

As you said, just record the game, switch to the recorded version pause it at the opening kick until the radio catches up and you’re done. I did both last Saturday, listened to the CBS for the first half, switched to the radio crew during halftime and just left it on the rest of the game and post game. Have done this since the 1st game. I get Tune-In through my Sonos app, and it plays all over my house and porches. Wish I had known about it before. With Blackledge doing the Auburn game, I will keep it on the TV version this week.

I still think Kirby is calling the shots with that “impose your will” stuff on the goal line. It should now be obvious that we don’t have the hosses to do that. Spread out and make the defense spread out and we score with ease. Even Saban recognizes that and has said as much.

    Like

    • Dylan Dreyer's Booty

Well we ought to have the hosses, given the size of the line, in my opinion.

Still, as the Senator said, “…I am really curious to see how much growth is left to coax out of this team’s young talent in those three games…”, and that is what this season has been about and still is. The way we score in general, it’s really isn’t fair to criticize Chaney. Nothing works all the time; our success rate is very good.

Kirby sure didn’t waist any time calling a timeout with a minute thirty left in the first half. Guess he realized he made a mistake last week… and learned from it.

We also ran more bootlegs Saturday than we had all year leading up. Guess the coaches look at the internet as well.

And watching Tindall and AA on the field at the same time is awesome.

Think Fromm missed a couple wide open guys because he was determined to go to JJ. Hope the coaches correct that.

Chaney calling the jet sweep to Swift right before the victory formation was completely out of character. Would love to hear Kirby comment on that.

The only thing I will say regarding our goal line screw ups is we need a full back. Hopefully Kirby comes to that conclusion as he has shown he is capable of correcting his own mistakes. Perhaps a graduate transfer next year would help.

Over all we should have hung fifty on them… and all with a baby offensive line… wow.

    And I hate Auburn.

This is one of my biggest gripes about Jake Fromm. He locks in on one guy too frequently, instead of going through his progressions. I can’t count the number of wide open WR’s Fromm has missed out on, because he’s locked into one guy. Ridley is deadly once he gets the ball in his hands. Fromm needs to target Ridley a minimum of 5 times a game.

Good write-up and summary. UGA looks steps ahead these past two weeks from what we saw earlier this year. Hope the younguns keep growing and we get a couple of guys healthy again. The impossible is becoming more plausible. Definitely a long shot, but we have gained ground on the Death Star since mid-October.

Glad you mentioned Ledbetter, great effort and a guy we have needed more production from. The OL was phenomenal given the circumstances of injury and youth. With a healthy Swift and angry Holyfield, we have a true running threat that will get everyone’s attention. With Fromm at the controls and having Holloman/Ridley/Godwin/Hardeman, and Nauta to throw to, we can challenge secondaries with some confidence. Our STs may not be the best in the country, but they have the edge on most everyone we will face. Just keep growing on defense and get healthy, something really good might happen.

If Kirby and Tucker ever employ another pathetic “prevent” defense like we saw Saturday, they should be docked in the very next paycheck. Those totally uncontested passing yards on that last scoring drive was the worst example/effort I have ever seen by a IGA defense. It totally distorted the margin of victory, stats, and actually put the game back into play. What were they thinking? I get loosening the safeties 4-5 yards, eliminating the blitz, etc. but the dozen+ yards of cushion our CBs gave made it a simple game of pitch and catch for any QB above the middle school level. This was a team who had not come close to a pass of 20 yards all game, did they really pose a threat? They didn’t until we let them get the ball on space on that drive. There is a point between pedal to the metal, and feet on the dashboard, I hope we find it before the next situation like that presents itself. Not the first time we have pulled the plug too early in 2018, imo. We have done so on offense a couple of times. Make sure they are not breathing before you holster your weapon.

The Cover 4 at the end was hard to watch, but I think the logic was that Kirby was content to let them score so long as we made them burn lots of clock to do it, which would ensure that they wouldn’t have time to score 3x. But yeah, hard to watch.

It didn’t take long, they were picking up yardage at a 1st down per play clip. It was excessive, as stated, there is an in-between “play safe” style. Even our past “prevent nothing” attempts weren’t that pathetic—-and that was with a weak QB and once decent receiver.

My son said that Kentucky fans cuss a lot, which they did. Mostly about throwing the ball or how UGA paid the refs.

Snell was maybe not 100%, but neither was Swift.

I was really happy that the Dawgs at least tried to score right before half, but I also feel like the success of the draw + penalty probably forced helped make that decision a lot easier.

Bummer that they were not rewarded for the effort.

    Highlights from the road trip

    Fall colors
Spalding’s Bakery – great doughnut. Sell out early
Blue Door Smokehouse – solid bbq.
Justin’s House of Bourbon – easily the most impressive collection of bourbon I have ever seen. Picked up a store pick 14yr knob creek and a Bulleit barrel strength
Old San Juan Cuban – Beef empanadas were very good.

And a pretty easy drive up and back.

    RE: The criticism of Chaney..
Its all good when the OL can physically dominate the opponent. The question is what happens against an opponent when that is not possible (LSU) ?

Something I heard repeatedly while watching Bama/LSU is how Bama “beautifully mixed that run and pass”. And THAT is my primary criticism of Chaney. Keeping a defense off-balance by mixing running plays w pass plays is not something he’s shown the capability of doing.

  25. Let’s start right here, the barners are as disliked by dawgnation as any (FU is another conversation), whether they be 0-9 (like the n. ave. trade school) or 9-0, don’t make a shit here fella’s, CKS knows he/ staff have to plan, plan and GATA…….usually CKS has coaches/players near/around him on the sideline, but when the video camera’s focus on CKS and he’s breathing fire in his head set and there is not a sole within 20-50 feet, some one on the staff is getting scorched. If it’s the OC, QBC, RC, RBC or whom ever, it’s not the DC for sure….there is something going on that will be addressed in the off season, management style, thought process, etc….GO DAWGS!

I’m interested to see how the youth on this team progresses through these last 3 regular season games also. I’m worried about Tech more than any other as we haven’t played well at setting the edge or holding the middle, but some of those young guys (Anderson & Tindall) give me hope! Also, if we play the youth, the UMASS game will actually be exciting.

Some thoughts. Whoever in the earlier thread said we should just take a false start penalty if we are on the one and spread the field out. The Oline was doing great but both UF and UK had guys grabbing our RB before he hit the line. If you are going to play this game then run seven olineman in and have two TE’s, give the RB a chase to reach the LOS.

I’ve noticed that Jake is going through his progressions left to right unless it is the goal line throws to the left then he just look straight then throws left. If the the left WR is covered when he looks he moves on. The RB dump should always be on his right because he never looks back unless a swing to the RB was called in the first place.
