You may not have been aware of that strange time of possession stat in the Georgia-Auburn series, but I doubt anyone here will be surprised by this.
Like I said in this week’s Observation post, if the Dawgs have first-and-goal on the one this week, take a damned false start penalty. (I keed, I keed… I think.)
If ever there were a spot for Fields within the offense, you would think this would be it.

Given the same alignments, and play calls, I think the result would be exactly the same. Coaches have to be evaluating a different strategy, or we need new offensive coaches ASAP. It isn’t just the better defensive fronts like Auburn, KY, and FU that have stuffed us on short yardage situations. Our OL and RBs seems to do just fine until we bring everyone into a 60 square foot area, run back 3-5 yards and hand the ball off to a player going straight ahead into a scrum pile. And that is no reflection on Justin Fields, Herschel himself couldn’t jump over that pile of bodies.

He should change the math and defensive distribution. But that does assume we would alter the formation and do some things pre-snap.

I know you’re kidding about taking a penalty, Senator. They should probably take two, just to be safe.

In a weird way, I’m fine w/ this stat. It hasn’t hurt us to this point (in terms of costing a game), and I very firmly believe in a regression to the mean, or perhaps progression in this case.

…not a good look for a team that is built on the ‘impose our will’ and ‘physicality’ culture.

Hmmm…let’s see. We spread out, give the defense multiple options to defend and we run for 300 yards. Or, we pack everyone in tight, don’t chip the defensive ends, and are last in the league in running it in. What could possibly be the solution?

This is all on the coaching staff. In those two series there must be a huge disconnect between Kirby and Chaney with Pittman included. Can’t dismiss Fromm misreading or just choosing to call his own number either. Kirby exploded for a reason and it wasn’t with the players.

When the end is left unblocked REPEATEDLY and is in the backfield so fast you think he may take the handoff…..that’s on the coaches

That one glaring issue against the Cats, was we never attempted to slow down 92 when the DAWGS were at the goal line at least on 3 attempts, film room study should (hopefully) correct that thought process……

I don’t know the percentages but it sure seems like our “jumbo” set nets zero yards instead of short yardage. It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s on the goal line or the middle of the field. I hate it.

Whats so frustrating about those two series is if we line up in a normal power I formation (not bunched) and run those same plays we likely score.

St. Saban never seems to have a decent placekicking game. Otherwise he’s close.

When your rushing is averaging almost 6 yards per carry no need to be inside the 5- we just need to score anywhere from the 6 out. Of course Clemson lines up that 300+ pound guy for jumbo goal packages this season – perhaps Cheney could put Netori back there once.
