Another nail in Jim Chaney’s coffin

Speaking of Bill Connelly, Georgia is now third in his offensive S&P+ ratings, behind only Oklahoma and Alabama.

Just imagine what the Dawgs could do with a real offensive coordinator.

Kirby can not be happy with this, especially the way Chaney’s offense puts Mell’s defense ln bad positions. Or something.

  5. Chaney is fascinating to me. 80% of the time, I think he is really, really good.

But the other 20% is so baffling that it’s hard to not let it overcome the good.

The only people who think Chaney us not a good OC have football challenged minds and have very little understanding how the game is played. The recipe for success which has been proven for decades, run the ball, play great defense and solid ST. The most important stat every game for UGA, 20 or less pass attempts

So why hasn’t Chaney’s name ever come up when there are HC job openings? It’s not as if he’s an unknown commodity.

  7. Hopefully we are not in any type of a shoot out this week. Inexperienced players against this defense don’t usually fare that well.

There is a whole ‘nother dimension to this offensive scheming that we sometimes ignore or even disbelieve. The mental aspects of trolling your future opponents..in particular the Alabama coaching staff and esp. the DC. The slow roll out of Field’s capabilities, the fake FG and PAT, the revealing of players like Cook (who I think is going to be a super-star) and now Tyler Simmons..the newly rediscovered propensity to throw to the TEs..The emergence of an excellent receiving corps….are all food for thought for those facing the growning monster that is the Georgia offense.
And Fromm is playing at such a high level that they can only hope and pray he somehow has a rare off day when they face him…something I doubt will ever happen..and even if he should that may mean facing Fields.
I still think there should be and probably will be some designs where you have both QBs in the backfield at the same time. With Fields as a virtual running back who can also throw the hell out of the ball, and with one of any number of talented RB’s also behind the QB the possibilities would be endless and a problem for the defense.
I don’t have a crayon but I have a big imagination. Lining Fields up next to or in front of the punter every punt would slow the punt rush and punt return game down.Defenses would have to play fake-safe every time.

Just dont pay any attention to the gap between Oklahoma and UGA or even Bama and UGA.

The difference between 2 and 3 is the same as the difference between 3 and 15.

The difference between 1 and 3 is the same as the difference between 3 and 39.

    But sure #3. woo hoo.

    • Would you be happier if UGA were 39th?

It’s a real shame Jim Chaney doesn’t have any control over what Oklahoma and Alabama do. No doubt a better offensive coordinator would.

Of course not. I just dont think that Chaney is getting the most out of this offense and the results of being 39th on Offense would likely look largely like what we are seeing right now. Same wins, same yardage, same points.

And I certainly dont think that Chaney is overachieving with this talent.

        • Let’s see. Florida is 31st and South Carolina is 33rd. You think they look largely like UGA?

Difference between UGA and Florida is the same as the difference between UGA and Oklahoma is what I am saying.

So Florida is as close to being #3 as we are to being #1.

            • So what? Alabama and Oklahoma have ridiculous offenses this year. Georgia is a step below ridiculous, but still excellent.

I really don’t get the point you’re trying to make here, other than throwing shade on Chaney. I got that.

Its a pretty significant step behind was the point. Much greater than saying “hey, look who is #3!” would imply.

The answer to “imagine what UGA could do with a real offense coordinator” is look at what Bama and Oklahoma are doing with elite offense talent like UGA has.

Oklahoma and Georgia have the same record, despite the Sooners having a real offensive coordinator.

Just stick with “I think Chaney sucks”.

I dont think he sucks. He has been very good. I dont think he is the 3rd best OC in the country or the best OC that UGA could get.

I dont think that he is getting the most out of the talent.

You think that being #3 in S&P+ makes Chaney above reproach. I dont. This isnt that deep.

                    • Whoa, hoss. The coach hasn’t been born yet who’s beyond reproach. I’ve been critical of Chaney’s playcalling this season when it’s been merited.

What I’m pointing out is simply that Chaney is doing an excellent job running the offense this season.

Out of curiosity, who’s the best OC that Georgia could get?

                • Georgia’s offense is averaging 7.4 yards per play this season, good for third nationally behind Oklahoma and Alabama.

For context, consider that over the last ten years, that average would have been no worse than fourth nationally in any particular season and would have led the country outright in 2012 and 2015.

If only Chaney were a real offensive coordinator.

Oklahoma has not faced LSU, and Auburn’s defenses. Also, Cheney and Smart seem to have been focused on getting more youngsters involved in games early instead of just piling up style points. It really becomes almost an apples to oranges comparison doesn’t it?
I believe Georgia’s offense is just starting to bloom..and it’s still done very well. We’re about to see the full blooming thing and it’s going to be awesome. Man..what a load of talent CKS and Co. have amassed. It’s young, awesome and getting ripe.

I am glad that some of y’all have come around on Jim Chaney. I caught so much shit here after the 2016 season for claiming that Chaney and Pittman were good coaches and that fans should give them some time.
