Thanksgiving Day massacre. I was there, and I am still thankful for that game. Thank you, Coach Goff, for stomping the nerds into the ground.

The 1995 game with Hines at QB was even better. It robbed them of hope, which is always a great thing.

Hines was superman that day…and again in the next game in Atlanta.
How did that kick get through all those hands? That was the worst looking game winning kick in football history.

After he started with the 2 worst whippings in the series in my adulthood, he did ok.
Anyone remember how open that track star was at the end of the half of the 1990 game? As I recall that we would have taken the lead if he’d caught it. Instead it went DOINK!!
I won’t argue that Ray was bad in a lot of ways but he was even more unlucky. He gets a couple of breaks and he might have been ok all things considered.

Lot’s of injuries a couple of years on some of those teams. 5 points away from being undefeated one year (’92?). He was a DGD…..remember that game like it was yesterday (above), slung some players around like a bunch of rag dolls. South Georgia boy was not afraid to get in there and mix it up.

He was like 34 when he got the job, and had never even been a coordinator.
His time in Athens is as much an indictment on how badly Dooley and BM fucked up the succession as it was about Goff.
On the other hand, had they done the obvious thing, Paul Johnson probably would have ended up as UGA coach at some point.

Not as true as it once was, but a lot of good players down there. Basically has kept Auburn and FSU rocking for a long time.
Erk and PJ built GSU on those kids that couldn’t qualify.

Yep….can also remember Southern Miss, Kansas State and UTC coming down that way. Had some free ends that played with those schools in addition to Auburn & FSU. The word was out….and of course you also had South Carolina and Clemson.
UGA didn’t recruit South Georgia too well in those days (Dooley). Didn’t know whether they were just lazy or limited with a budget. A lot of kids would have killed to have been a Dawg back then. Those days are gone now imo, not much gets by Kirby nowadays.

It had a lot to do with Jan Kemp. Those kids were hardly ever qualified, and when we stopped taking Prop 48s it really hamstrung is there.
It let Bowden lay the foundation to a dynasty and Pat Dye win 3 straight conference titles as well as GSU’s emergence.

Not the ones I knew, no problems with grades. Would see scouts from the schools I mentioned above at spring training and games. Never saw anyone from UGA….most every one of those guys would have easily qualified to get in at UGA. Probably 4 or 5 that could have played there. A lot of misses thru the years, not just my school.
BTW, “free ends” should be friends in post above…autocorrect is a pain.

He was one wide open, right in your hands, dropped hook pass over the middle from beating ‘Bama. He was screwed out of a win against UF when, in the pouring down rain, Florida failed on a third down conversion..only to have a ref say that they had called a time-out and gave them a second chance, which they converted.
“One play away Ray”, was the unfortunate fate of a fine and DGD.

I get your gist but the Florida game happened a bit different. We apparently scored the tying TD but was called back for a Florida timeout. The next play was an incomplete pass to end the game. Horrible finish.

my frat purloined a pig from the ag school in the mid seventies( we however got away with it) and we had no curse placed upon us so …… fanciful(fantasy) thinking is probably not applicable. I know a couple of Ray’s ex-players and they indicate he just wasn’t a smart man. Good Coaches are playing chess and Ray was playing checkers . My favorite or most interesting part of this incident was how Goff ,a former QB, just flung #66 to the ground like he was a receiver. That means our linemen weren’t big enough.IMHO.

Our defense at that time was miles behind the league heavyweights in terms of size, strength and overall talent level. Offensively with the exception of ’90 (our last year in an outdated offensive scheme) we could almost always put points on the board once McDuffie showed up.

God that was 25 years ago. I was a freshman redcoat in that corner of Mark Richt Field when that fight broke out. It was awesome.

Believe it or not, this was the first live Georgia game I ever attended. I was 13 years old and it was so much fun. Going home and having Thanksgiving dinner afterwards was the perfect capper to a perfect day.

My only regret is that Georgia didn’t do an onside kick after that score, recover it and score again.
I hate the announcer. He blamed Georgia for still playing with two minutes left instead of blaming GT for starting a fight. I can’t stand people to make excuses for GTish (synonym for classless..only worse) behavior. By his measure, fighting is justified when you feel the score is being run up on you.
I remember someone saying, “We won the game and the fight”

Totally agree. Play the G-D game the way it’s supposed to be played and quit being butt hurt over the difference in how much you lose by. The bigger travesty is forcing a hardworking backup player to go in and only run plays up the middle to burn clock. I’d like to think we’re a team now that, like Alabama, spends as much time playing and challenging ourselves to be the best we can be………..it doesn’t mean go out and run double reverse flea flickers when you’re up big, but it does mean to call plays for the backups as if you’re tied in the 2nd quarter

I was filling in for the instructor in a class when Ray brought Tim Worley in. We stepped outside and Ray went into this big explanation of why Tim missed class and would never do so again. Ray left and Worley fell sound asleep in the back row within 5 minutes!

I went to a movie the night before in Marietta and the team was there watching the same movie (“A Perfect World” with Kevin Costner; not sure why I can remember that). After the movie, I went to the bathroom, and on my way out, Ray Goff was coming in. I gave him a “give em hell tomorrow, coach” and was giddy the next day when they scored that last touchdown.

He basically said, my interpretation,the game lasts for 60 minutes, you should plan on playing all of them because we do. I do feel a coach should be able to signal a surrender and “tap out” by replacing his starters and not calling timeouts, or running trick plays with his backups. You keep your starters in, it is still on. That is my problem with what UMass and Vandy did this year. No let up until they squeal.
Goff was, and is, a DGD. That was Vince’s fault for not having an exit plan that didn’t caused the fiasco that led to us hiring Rau Goff when he clearly wasn’t prepared for what was thrust on him. Glad to see everything has worked out well for him.
