Having just enjoyed The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix, and anticipating season two of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel starting up on Amazon next week, I thought I’d ask what you guys are watching and enjoying on streaming services.
I started watching the Narcos: Mexico series. I’m a sucker for anything crime-related, really. This series has been good, though.
Have you listened to The Last Podcast on the Left? They cover the history and backstories of cults, spree/serial killers, etc., in hilarious fashion. I’m still listening to their old stuff; their retelling of Casey Anthony, Rasputin, or the Donner Party are all good starting episodes.
Huh. That looks interesting! Thanks!
Thanks for the rec, I’ll check it out. Have you tried History on Fire?
I just subscribed to HoF, thank you for the rec. LPOTL will give you historical facts, but it’s hook is the 3 guys discussing the details. It’s pretty off humor, but it has me laughing in public when the guy Henry Zebrowski does his thing. They also cover other topics (UFO sightings, weird phenomena, etc), but I stick to their true story episodes.
I love Narcos, although I haven’t started Mexico yet. I will say it’s not for the faint of heart. Season 2 in particular was emotionally exhausting.
Season two of Patriot on Amazon was awesome.
Damnation surprised me. Man in the high castle left me a little disappointed, all the narcos are good.
My only problem with Narcos is I have to literally watch the screen since I don’t speak spanish. Way too much ADD in this millennial to handle that.
I do the same. One of the perks of watching on a small screen is that I don’t have to shift my eyes between the English text and the action going on above.
Oh, that’s just sad, IMO. My Spanish is awful. But then, I have watched my fair share of non-English films. I hate dubbing and really appreciate the show’s effort to be authentic by not having obvious Spanish-speaking situations be in English.
I just finished Bosch, on the recommendation of a GTP’er, and eagerly await the next season. I just started the Jack Ryan series on Amazon. I’m two episodes in, the jury is still out.
Yeah, we’ve been planning to watch Jack Ryan. Haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I though Jack Ryan was pretty good. Finished it with the wife in about a week and a half.
Bosch is awesome!
Jack Ryan takes a few to get good. Ends well. Stick with it.
Loved the whole thing, but the one with Tom Waits as the gold prospector was the high point for me.
As far as other stuff out there, I really enjoyed “Maniac” with Jonah Hill and Emma Stone this fall.
I’m big on the British murder mysteries. Midsomer Murders, Inspector George Gently, Dr. Blake Mysteries, lately Hinterlands. The accents can take a little getting used to, especially in Hinterlands, but they’re all enjoyable.
I eagerly await Midge Maisel.
Have you watched the British version of Wallander with Kenneth Branagh? It’s good, as is Broadchurch.
It’s good, as is Broadchurch. Same for Happy Valley.
We watch all the Marvel series on Netflix, but those might have run their course, or maybe they’ll move over to the new Disney streaming service.
We tried Man in the High Castle on Amazon but we stopped after the first season.
Otherwise, it’s series that we record and then binge later. Westworld, Brockmire, Counterpart, and Tales from the Tour Bus are all I can think of now.
Medal of Honor on Netflix
I like a lot of Buster Scruggs, especially “The Gal got rattled”. Grainger Hines as Mr Arthur and Zoe Kazan as Alice were especially good. Waits is no slouch either,
The Romanoffs is uneven but worth a look.
Also looking forward to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel next week. One of my all-time favorites is the German TV series Babylon Berlin, which Is viewable on Netflix. Set in the spring of 1929 just before the sunset of Germany’s doomed democracy, the Weimar Republic. Terrific plot lines, characters and production values: at $45-50 million, the most expensive German television series ever filmed and you do see where the money went. 16 episodes comprising seasons 1 and 2 were released simultaneously.Season 3 is now in production.
Just watched ‘Line of Duty’ on Hulu, made by the same folks who did ‘Bodyguard’ on Netflix. Incredible TV with intricately woven plots. Also watching ‘My Brilliant Friend’ on HBO.
Check out Norsmen on Netflix. it is a monty python-esque spoof of the vikings shows made in norway, though it is in english. I read it averages 1mm viewers in Norway, where the population is only 5MM. basically like if 80MM people watched anything in the US
You need to watch The Kominsky Method on Netflix. It stars Michael Douglas, Alan Arkin, and Nancy Travis, and it is the best show I’ve seen all year. It’s only 8 25-ish minute episodes, you can literally binge in a day, and it’s funny and filled with so much pathos. Wonderful, wonderful show. I can’t say enough about it.
Also, I know this is an “older” show that actually just wrapped production, but I started watching The Last Ship on Hulu, and it’s pretty damned good. The first two seasons were excellent, and while the third hasn’t started well, I’m interested to see where it goes.
Also, Hulu recently added every episode of an oldie but a goodie: Married with Children. Damned if I’m laughing at every non-PC joke the show has to offer. It’s the perfect antidote if you hate shows infected with political correctness or “important issues.” It’s just funny. No sermons.
Also enjoyed Buster Scruggs. The Coens have the perfect touch in selecting music for their movies. Brendan Gleeson singing the Irish tune “The Unfortunate Lad” and the instrumental snippit of Norman Blake’s “Randall Collins” made me smile. Whatever they pay T. Bone Burnett for his musical input, it’s worth it.
Started Billy Bob Thornton’s Goliath this week. Halfway through season 1 its pretty good.
Bill Shanks is reporting FISH FRY is retiring.
I’m a diehard Brit mystery/police procedural fan…enjoying “Johnathan Creek”, “Sherlock Holmes”, Midsomer Mysteries; Endeavor…and all the really good Brit TV shows. For comedy, try: Chewing the Fat; Still Game..Scot humor is something else!
Loving The Ballad of Buster Scruggs so far. I’m on story number 4. Will probably finish today or tomorrow.
I’m almost through Narcos Mexico and while it doesn’t break any new ground it’s entertaining as hell so I have to recommend it.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the best thing I’ve seen on a television in as long as I can remember. Told my kids to watch it – the youngest is 36 – and they said they “just couldn’t get into it”. WTH did I do wrong?
Take a deep breath. Alabama is not a football team sent down from GOD above. Kirby has as fine of athletes as any college in the nation. It will come down to a mental game. Our DAWGS will be ready to win. I can not wait for 4:00pm Saturday.

Definitely not sent down from heaven. More like sent up from hell.
Holiday Spirits question:
What are some high quality brown liquors still flying under the radar? Any recommendations? NC still runs its liquor stores with central purchasing, although different stores get different allocations of this and that. And the number of options, especially bourbon, is getting overwhelming.
I toured the woodford reserve distillery last week and while I’m not real high on their base product the double Oak was very tasty. Four roses single barrel is good, basil Hayden is really smooth.
Yep, Four Roses single barrel was good. It’s funny, when I was in school, Four Roses was the rot-gut you bought when you were broke. Then I went to Europe and saw it listed as a top shelf brand. This current iteration is nothing like that crap from the early 80’s.
I keep going back to Buffalo Trace. There are some that may be a little better, but they cost much more. BT is good neat, or you can mix it. It’s my choice unless someone wants to gift me some Pappy.
100% agree. Had the same experience – I couldn’t believe that 4 Roses was the only bourbon I could find in Europe. It was so nasty. Having toured their Kentucky facility last year, I learned that in 2002 Seagrams sold the brand, and they shifted back to producing bourbon in the US instead of blended “gutrot” whiskey as you call it. Before that the only bourbon they sold was to Europe and Asia (Japan).
I’m with you on Buffalo Trace. A couple of years ago I was trying every bourbon I could but kept circling back to BT. That’s where my bourbon adventure ended up. Currently doing my best to tour and sample as many Georgia Brewers as I can. Spent some time up in Roswell a few weeks ago and hit up From The Earth Brewing, Variant Brewing, and Gate City. Variant has an incredible whiskey barrel aged stout that’ll knock your socks off.
From the Earth has some quality brews… and they have great tastes in music. Brunch is solid.
I agree on Four Roses…in my youth it was an average brand…also, Ancient Age, which advertised “If you can find a better bourbon, buy it”…I did an never saw the brand since. Woodford and Buffalo Trace remain in my special category…there are so many good ones out there.
Woodford is great and price pointed where you don’t feel bad using it for cocktails. Agreed their tour was fantastic. In fact, they insisted giving me a Military Discount based on my word. I turned to my Girlfriend and asked: “How did they know I’m a Veteran”? I forgot I was wearing my KittyHawk hat because it wasn’t football season. Four Roses was another great tour and one where they really broke out A LOT of bottles to sample.
Not sure of their distribution in NC, but American Spirit Whiskey has some good bourbon. Made in Atlanta. Maybe you have family that can grab you a bottle of Fiddler. They have a good rye, too.
Made in Atlanta by GEORGIA GRADS
Is it actually made in Atlanta, or is it just bottled there? Not doubting you, but I’ve learned that a lot of “small batch distilleries” are actually just bottling blends from the large distilleries. The difference can be a little tricky to figure out sometimes.
Made in Atlanta. You can tour the distillery. It’s off 85 near Sweetwater Brewery. They have a second tasting room on the west side near the Beltline.
Nice! I’ll have to add that to my list of visits next time I’m home.
Highland Park 18
I’ve been wanting to give Redbreast a try. 5Points has the 23 yr.
I’ve had the 18. Good but not that much better than 12.
I’d start with the 12 and then see if the rest is worth the extra. I drink it neat and it’s abiut as smooth and drinkable as anything I’ve ever had.
cool, I’ll go with the 12. Funny, I was gonna go with it neat. I usually ice my whiskey to savor it a little longer and because Higgins in the original Magnum PI took offense to the offer of ice: “What do I look like an American”! Also, I only drank whiskey neat abroad to keep the “water” out of my system, lol; and thought it would be a solid way to do Irish Whisky
The MM Barrel Strength Small Batch is delightful. I got the 5 Points Bottle Shop house blend. Definitely worth a taste.
Absolutely. Only bourbon I’ll drink, not terribly expensive.
I quit WT for Eagle Rare Single Shot. But I’m laying off. Mid shelf scotch with lots of ice and soda allow me a much gentler decompression.
My go-to is 1792. Less than $30 and tastes more like a $50 bottle.
I have a lot of bourbon, rye and scotch. A LOT. As far as the American stuff goes, I tend to avoid craft stuff as it just isn’t as good – yet.
I just Googled the NC ABC stock list, and below would be my list of damn fine whiskeys that should not be too hard to find, and would make great gifts (to yourself or anyone else).
Old Forester 1920
Old Forester 1910 – new, should hit NC very soon
John J. Bowman Single Barrel
Jim Beam Little Book II – may be a bit harder to find
Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel
Russell’s Reserve Rye
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Four Roses Single Barrel – NC is low on this stuff for some reason
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
Old Fitzgerald BIB 9 year – may be harder to find
Thank you. I’m working through a Bowman now, very smooth, maybe a bit too smooth. But excellent neat, which is how I prefer it.
JR Revelry is my current favorite in the mid price range. On the sweeter side.
The guys at Village Spirits on the Eastside turned me on to Henry McKenna 10yr and it didn’t disappoint. Also, 13th Colony in Americus has some good bourbons.
Been into some different Irish whiskies recently. Sexton is fabulous, and like $25/bottle. As for bourbon, Four Roses, as has been mentioned, has become my ‘utility bourbon’ of choice. Bird Dog 4 year is fantastic for the price. Also, anything ASW puts out is worthwhile. Have known the distiller, Justin, for years. Good dude, fantastic brewer/distiller.
If you like single malt Scotch (or even if you don’t), I can recommend Auchentoshan Triple Distilled. It’s a lowland Scotch, not a highland, so it’s made with less peet which means it doesn’t take like burnt wood and dirt. It’s also the only triple distilled single malt scotch made. It’s a much smoother taster than Macallan or Lagavullin, and less expensive at about $50 a bottle.
I like Glenmorrangie 18 yo. Extremely Rare. A highland with little if any peet.
Keith and I prefer Rebel Yell.
Drug my Rose Bowl crowd into the Chez Jay for drinks to explain Goliath to them, they had no idea. Back in Valdosta/Athens they were hooked and we all highly anticipated season two…what a let down! Billy Bob boo hoo fired the original writer and wrote season two himself….
Now we are all waiting on season two of Jack Ryan!
BTW…great article yesterday that shed light on Holyfield’s win over Tyson and how “positive vibes” and a never quit attitude helped him overcome a fighter that hade 25-1 odds against him!
Go You Damn Hairy Dawgs 🐶🐾
I gave up on Goliath after a couple episodes of Season 2. What a shame, Season 1 was good. Billy Bob a lot better actor than writer.
I gave up on him when he played in the phony ass “Friday Night Lights”. How you could take a real, gut wrenching story of abuse and turn it into a feel good movie was unreal. “The Wall of Shame” indeed.
Watched the first episode of “The Romanoffs” last nite, thought it was just OK. Funny in places, and I liked the ending, but it moved slowly, and it scored just a 60 on the believability meter.
Its gets weirder.
Sorry to be off topic but does anyone know where the team will enter the stadium on Saturday? Going to the game and trying to give them all the support they can get.
It’s underneath the stadium in the gulch. If you want to see the busses enter you’ll want to be off Northside around MLK/Mitchell but they could go back further. The road itself is blocked well prior to where individuals can walk.
The only way to see team exit is the fancy seats. I was lucky enough to have one for the National Championship last year and heckled Pruitt madly from the bridge.
This was all as of last year when the old dome was being removed, so it could be open to walkers now, I dunno. Magnum Street is what you’re looking for though.
Have you raked a forest today?
He was thankful for himself at Thanksgiving. Narcissist much dude?
He gave MBS a pass because cash.
At what point will the Marmalade Mussolini say something so dumb, bodily narcissistic or irresponsible that even elected Republicans are going to start squirming?
Where/when does the shame line begin? (I know it won’t actually be shame but more of practical matter of self preservation.)
We have a mentally deranged, moral-less, moron in the Oval Office whose every known associate is a convicted felon. Isn’t it time to do something before something really goes wrong?
Derek ole buddy, you always remind me of the great saying “Never wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty but the pig loves it.” Have a nice day.
Have a blissful day. I’ve been led to believe that the ignorance will help.
I dunno. Your ignorance doesn’t seem to have helped you.
Helped me be blissful? You noticed bliss? Seriously?
Even you idiot’s snide comments are fucktarded. No wonder you avoid any and all substance whatsoever.
You obviously are not from the south boy. Using language like that and not understanding that controlled burning is awesome for land and wildlife.
Substance…here is some substance for you boy💩💩
You’re missing the point, I think. Trump put the comparison on Finland, whose President in turn denied that the subject ever was discussed. So Orangeman just peed on another world head of state.
Aw Dreck, isn’t that cute.
Not nearly as cute and sweet as you are tho. Was your name inspired by watching Ned Beatty getting raped in the woods?
It’s an homage isn’t it?
I’ve charted Derek’s evolution (or devolution) as a debater.
You trolled me. I’ll bite.
You make some points but they are mostly small stuff.
However, the idea of raking a forest has been over-hyped.
Anyone in the forest industry, the DNR, etc. will tell you that controlled burns, usually done in the springtime, are extremely beneficial. They clear the ground of accumulated debris (with the pine beetle and other destructive pests and diseases bringing down trees by the millions..there are places in the west where you literally cannot walk through for the log-jam) and brush, add fertility to the soil, allows sunlight to better reach the ground, encourages the germination of beneficial (to wildlife) plants and forbes.
If you drive around the Georgia countryside in the spring, you will see these controlled burns (or at least smell them). They’re a good thing.
No you arent’ raking the whole Chattahoochee National Forest..but you can rake out firebreaks..control burns and good management practices and prevent the useless tragedy that well meaning but uneducated tree huggers in the west brought on themselves.
If I told you that eating lots of pizza would help you lose weight and you said “stupid!” and then someone said “no wait, he’s gotta point, diet and excercise will help you lose weight” what the fuck is that? Dude said RAKE not whatever you want to change it to so it’s not moronic.
I could be wrong, but I’d bet the raking being referred to is that done by a brush rake, which is an attachment for the blade of a bulldozer. It is often used for clearing fire breaks. https://kenco.com/products/dozer-rake/
Don’t let that get in the way of your narrative though…
Hold Dear Leaders balls. Cup them gently. He could use all the help he can get.
Wow, what a stunningly good retort. I give you a reasonable possibility, with an example of what I’m referring to, and you resort to the type of “locker room talk” that Cheeto Jesus was excoriated for by the media. You’re a sad grandstanding clown just like he is, you’re just too caught up in your own ego to see it.
The Oval Office is the only appropriate place for rude, immature and vulgar people. I’m with you. I suppose then that I’ll have your vote.
I’m building a protective cocoon over america and the UN is gonna pay for it!!!
Build the dome!!! Build the dome!!!
Make America Safe From “Them” Again.
You know who they are.
Good grief you’re guaranteed to play that race card like Skynyrd plays “Freebird” aren’t ya? Meanwhile you’ve ignored the fact that I’ve expressed that I don’t think highly of Trump A LOT of the time. I guess it’s easier for you to lean on that crutch and cast aspersions my way than it is to admit maybe that wasn’t a completely dumb statement on his part.
If it’s not dumb why hasn’t he picked a National Forest to rake? He could do that ya know.
Let’s see the cost of raking a National Forest, you know like they do in Finland.
He could, and if he hasn’t and a bad forest fire breaks out in one he should eat crow for sure. You obviously couldn’t rake the whole thing, but they probably already do it along fire breaks. His inferring Finland does the whole forest like that is just dumb. (See I just criticized him there, kinda hard to do if his schwantz is in my mouth no?) What is more likely doable is the power company running these machines along their right of ways, so if power lines do spark there’s little to nothing to catch on fire. You and the media are disingenuously trying to put in people’s minds that he means a garden rake, which heck even he might have thought at first, but I can almost guarantee you that Zinke, or whoever briefed him on this, meant the machine I linked to.
The idea that you can rake the forest is ludicrous. Yes, bulldozers cut firebreaks, and wildland firefighters use tools to scrape the forest floor to bare dirt to create firebreaks. But in the longer term, you can’t remove all burnable material from a forest floor because, besides being impossible, that’s what holds the soil in place. One of the biggest dangers following a forest fire is that, ironically, coming from rain storms and mudslides resulting from the bare forest floor.
The area that burned in CA was primarily scrub oak and grass, not forest land, so this discussion is actually moot in the case of the most recent fires.
If the president thinks the national forests are being mismanaged, then he need look no further than our good buddy Sonny Perdue, who’s responsible for those as Agriculture Secretary. Anyhow, the Finnish president has denied ever mentioning rakes, so this is another invented crisis by our idiot-in-chief.
Uh, WTM did you miss the part where I said raking the whole forest with a bush rake is not a doable thing? And then where I said what he said about Finland was dumb? My point is that piece of machinery is what was most likely being referred to not a garden rake like Derek and the media are trying to say. If you have proof I’m wrong please show me and I will have no problem conceding my point.
I get it, you think Trump is the love child of Hitler and Satan. I have no proof of such, so until I do I’m gonna cheer him if he does something good and jeer him when he screws up. Despite what you heard, that is ok.
There is no machine that can “rake” the forest. there are logging machines, bulldozers, pinestraw harvesting machines, but none of these is going to be able to rake a forest-it’s just not happening. That the president said it doesn’t make it true. He’s sheltered and clueless about quite a lot of things, but when he makes a statement about ‘raking the forest’ he should understand how stupid that sounds.
I’ll post this again I guess. This product is called a dozer RAKE and is also commmly referred to as a brush RAKE or a root RAKE. Like a leaf rake it allows for the gathering of debris while leaving most of the soil. https://kenco.com/products/dozer-rake/
The man only knows pettiness, and he was making a petty political stab at California. That’s the debased reality of it.
Stranger I never said Trump wasn’t petty, I know he’s petty. It’s like there’s a damn race between him and “The Resistance” to see who can get to peak pettiness first.
Since there is a machine called a brush rake in existence, that is widely used in forestry and fire control, I’m just attempting to think critically and question the validity of the stance that Trump meant literally raking the forest, instead of running a dozer with a root/brush rake attachment in order to better clear more fire breaks. Doesn’t that seem like a simpler and more likely answer?
Wonka makes me laugh almost as much as a good NPC meme!
He gave the crux of the problem yesterday: he trusts his gut more than intelligent professionals’ brains. That about says it all.
Glow on Netflix was fun. We just finished up season 2. Got hooked into watching Poldark with the wife on Amazon I am ashamed to say. Also I am finishing up season 3 of Mr. Robot. If you have not seen that one, give it a try. It is a bit crazy but groundbreaking in several ways IMHO.
Yep, all good recs. I really enjoy Brit period dramas.
Today’s playpen started out so promising. What to binge watch. What’s the best whiskey, etc. But alas, it was not to be. Derek had to go and inject politics into what was a promising day.
That is what the playpen is for.
No, it was for ANYTHING OTHER than football/sports related. No one said it had to be about politics (although the injection of politics into EVERYTHING is what got it started). We the readers/posters decide the topics and what had possibly started out as a non political day( movies, whiskey et) went straight into the crapper.
Actually I did all three: tv, whisky and politics. I’m a triple threat. And you’re a whiner. Skip them. Easy. Or bitch….
Whatever, Derek is my horse if he never wins a race! FIDO Derek “Fuck it and Drive one”!
Were you really surprised? Derek’s gonna Derek.
The banter is entertaining up to a point..when the insults start flying, I just tune out and move along.
He needs a safe space within the Playpen!! He’s getting the vapors!!!
Nope, not a safe space, just getting political fatigue. Election season is over, LET IT GO.
Maybe you can make this your motto
“Life’s short. Make sure you spend as much time as possible on the Internet arguing with strangers about politics.”
On to 2020!
Btw: I’m getting a little sick and tired of trying to have discussions within the Playpen that are designed specifically for the Playpen and I wait for the Playpen all week and then some guy has to ruin MY DAY by complaining about political posts! Where do these people come from? I’m trying to enjoy my Playpen day and YOU are ruining everything! 😢😭😤😭😢😤😠😭😢😫😫😫😫
If getting to bitch in the play pen is what you look forward to all week, I feel sorry for you. It must be a sad lonely life. My condolences.
See what I mean??? Why do I have to put up with this? Man doesn’t even understand sarcasm. Somebody STOP HIM!!!
All I could think about when I read this was Lebowski saying to the due “My condolences, the bums lost!”
He’s certainly an example Trump would be proud of. Spending someone else’s money and acting like he’s self-made.
Dude, I can’t stand Trump, but you need to give it a rest. It’s a movie reference, don’t make it political. Your nonsense is embarrassing, all you do is polarize every argument rather than try to find some common ground.
Ok. Middle ground.
I’ll say something nice about Trump…….
At least he ain’t a twin.
Does that count?
I had never considered that, but the Big Lebowski is Trump in movie form. When Mueller closes in do you think Trumpski will get in the chair for sympathy?
Yeah, I know what you mean!
I can’t wait for 2020 when Your President will nominate a SCOTUS Justice in spite of the Biden Clause and I get to sit back and laugh and laugh and laugh.
Derek is the Paul Johnson of this blog….
You are the Charlie Weis of this blog.
I’d say Schtick Dreck is the Wile E. Coyote of this blog.
Didn’t he repeatedly call himself “genius?” I think Trump maybe the Wile E. Coyote of American politics.
Nah, Trump is some mash-up of Elmer Fudd & Montgomery Burns.
Bless his little heart
Man..that’s just going too far. Bluto just might get involved if you don’t clean it up at least a little.
Well, we won’t have him to kick around anymore. Not many more days to get the shots in.
Dereck’s like a chimp at the zoo. He has to wait all week to fling his poop, but he can’t stop himself. Just be grateful that Bluto limited him to the playpen. It really was tiring to read a post on conference meetings that included 75, “ORANGE MAN BAD!!1!1” comments.
And what is that you do that is so fucking important?
I temper the idiocy of some on the board. When Derek loses his shit about how “ORANGE MAN IS THE WORST PERSON EVER AND HE WANTS TO KILL EVERYBODY AND THE WORLD WILL SPIN OFF ITS AXIS AND ZOMG!1!1!!1!!!1,” I can point out that Trump’s actual policies aren’t very much different than Bush’s, or Obama’s, or Clinton’s, etc. That it’s stupid to believe the hysteria that Trump wants to start a second Holocaust. And that the policies of Trump’s political opponents, like Occasio-Cortez and Sanders, of having free shit for everybody and open borders are likely to result in very bad outcomes.
And I just have a personal tick where I have a hard time letting adamantly moronic statements, of the kind Derek regularly makes, slide. If you want to argue that the top marginal income tax rate should be 35% or 39%, I’m not all that interested beyond stating that lower taxes are better. But if you want to argue that Bush and Obama invaded Middle Eastern countries in the name of peace, but Trump increasing border security in the USA and antagonizing Russia less than neocons would like means he’s an aspiring dictator, well that’s the kind of delusional stupidity that I just find fascinating.
Except in presidential terms, and just by a basic decency standard, he IS the worst there has possibly ever been. In America.
You have interesting standards. FDR put American citizens of Japanese ancestry in concentration camps. LBJ required his subordinates to watch him defecate. Wilson was a fascist who signed a law making speech critical of the US government illegal. Lincoln invaded southern states, suspended habeas corpus, and ordered the arrest of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in response to an unfavorable ruling against his administration. Nixon implemented price controls, completely abolished the gold standard, and massively expanded government bureaucracy.
But Orange Man takes the cake because he has strengthened border security and refused to antagonize Russia, eh? Oh, plus he hurts liberal’s feelings. So, yeah. Terrible.
Just finished Rake. Really like the Australian shows. Just finished the third season of The Last Kingdom. Enjoyed that as well.
Oh yeah, if you haven’t seen The Tick on Prime, I thought it was great.
The Tick was good. Funny as hell.
I’m a Tick fan, but didn’t get into that one. Maybe I should try again. Spoon!
Is that about forests?
Just finished Sneaky Pete: very good. Starting Narcos Mexico: good so far. I watch Riverdale with my high school kids. It’s absolutely nutso. It jumps the shark 4 or 5 time an episode. It’s fun to watch with the kids. In the same vein is The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. There is a lot of Satan worshipping stuff in it so you liberals will like it.
Changing gears, my son is taking a film class in college and has gotten me into Kurosawa. His films are on Film Struck and are excellent. Really enjoyed Ikiru, Yojimbo, Hidden Fortress, and Seven Samurai.
Filmstruck is dead as of tomorrow but Criterion is going to start a channel next year. If you haven’t seen Kurosawa’s Dreams do so.
Yep, I can’t believe FilmStruck is dead. I just started subscribing a couple of months ago. Kind of a sad commentary on the public’s taste. Although I can’t judge, since I just started subscribing. Hopefully Criterion will cover the same ground. I’ll definitely watch Kurosawa’s Dreams. Thanks.
I guess it was too good to be true. We had it from the beginning and watch a ton. Here’s the Criterion link. https://www.criterion.com/channel
My wife and I are watching Bodyguard on Netflix and it’s pretty good. We also burned through Jack Ryan in a week or so. Definitely worth watching, especially if you’re a Tom Clancy fan.
If you like Bodyguard and have Hulu, be sure to check out the series ‘Line of Duty’, produced by the same team as Bodyguard and equally awesome.
Back to football, how’s our early signing day shaping up? Any expectations for who our top few signees will be? Surprises? Number of signees expected during the early period? Players entering school in January? Anything?
I’d really like to get that center out of Alabama.
I’d like to see Haselwood back in the fold.
Gotta have that LB out of MS.
Noah Cain would be a nice addition.
It’ll be interesting if Auburn starts bleeding recruits. Pappoe and George Pickens could be in play.
Yep, I’d love to get that ILB Dean. DB Stevenson would be a good catch. Not sure where whe’d get one, but another DT/NT would be appreciated. Any ideas on the number of recruits? I’m assuming we pair down to 20-22 this round. Doesn’t seem to be room for the full 24-25 again – that’s a good problem to have.
Damn, Derek! Just when I tuned you out you came up with a perfect recruiting list. Maybe you should stick to football.
In the words of a once great NBA star who name escapes and could use his left and right with equal proficiency: I’m amphibious!
The genius who uttered that was Charles Shackelford of NC State/Nets/76ers’. He was not the original however, that would be the great quote machine Yogi Berra
“He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.”
I just saw Paul Johnson is going to retire….too bad.
Did he blame his defensive coordinator?
Hahahaha….the article did point to the defense!
Just heard on the radio that The Genius has a press conference today, most likely to retire. I’m not too happy on that, unless they replace him with Chan or Bill Lewis
They should hire Richt. He would never lose at home.
One of the most fascinating topics to discuss is the assassination of JFK, but it doesn’t get discussed much these days. 20+ years ago, approximately 20% of the population believed the Warren Commission conclusion that JFK was killed by Lee Harvey Ozwald in a “lone nut” operation. Now, approximately 40% of the population believes it. What about you?
There are many theories about who conspired to kill Kennedy. Was it the CIA who were concerned he was working to eliminate the organization after they carried out the Bay of Pigs invasion against his direct order? Was it central bankers worried about Executive Order 11110? Was it a Cuban conspiracy? Was it the mafia?
We may never know as Jack Rubenstein killed the suspect Oswald two days later. A year after his conviction, in March 1965, Ruby conducted a brief televised news conference in which he stated: “Everything pertaining to what’s happening has never come to the surface. The world will never know the true facts of what occurred, my motives. The people who had so much to gain, and had such an ulterior motive for putting me in the position I’m in, will never let the true facts come above board to the world.” When asked by a reporter, “Are these people in very high positions, Jack?”, he responded “Yes.”
I would love to see the alternate history where the assassination plot was foiled and the conspirators were identified, tried, and convicted. How would the world be different? Kennedy easily gets a second term, LBJ (possibly the worst President in our history IMHO and the man that ruined the Democratic Party) is never president. Do we still escalate things in Vietnam? How does it affect the Cold War?
Read 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Great book. Lots of lead up to the assassination attempt and not a great deal of the aftermath, but enough to get you thinking. Overall a really good read.
I enjoyed the book also. King put a lot of research into getting the period details right, so it was kind of jarring to run into an anachronism: the hero and heroine drive past a billboard sign that says “Don’t Mess With Texas”. This clever slogan was actually invented a quarter of a century after the President’s assassination, the winning result of a contest held by the Texas Highway Dept for an anti-littering campaign. The TV series was of great interest when it was released on 2016 and was really the reason that I picked up a subscription to Hulu. It had its high points, but to me at least it ultimately disappointed in comparison to the book, a humongous but un-put-downable doorstopper of a novel.
One thing that is shocking to me is how little time is spent on the FACT that forensically there must have been two shooters.
The snipers nest in the book depository had three empty full metal jacket shell casings.
The shot caught by the Zapruder film showing a bullet blowing the back and side of Kennedy’s head out fragmented into dozens of pieces. Full metal jackets don’t do that. Ever.
Look at the so-called magic bullet. In practically pristine shape. That’s what full metal jacket bullets do. That’s what ammo was in the book depository.
I can’t say who, or from where, the second shooter was, but there’s no question that the fatal shot was NOT fired from the Italian bolt action rifle.
Had to be at least 2 shooters.
To answer the Senator’s question: I really have enjoyed “Ozarks” on Net Flix. Great storyline and acting. As a perk, the scenery is really nice.
Dereck, your points gleaned from factual news will never penetrate the minds of those making excuses for Drump. Stick to the treasonous unpatriotic line you used to pin on him and let the rest go. Posting a litany of his abuses is only deflected by closed political minds and when you insult, many of those minds only get dimmer as to what you are writing.
You have not posted one thing (politically speaking) that I disagree with and I think others who may agree with you may not want to enter the fray when insults fly. Your words need to be heard above the crowd here and you can only hope to couch your words such that some idiots look up while you piss on their leg.
When longtime political partisans see what they wanted to believe was a party of some integrity being dismembered and slandered they rebel. In just about any direction available.
Looks like the Playpen came a day too early…
