If the second-string quarterback is the most popular player on the team…

… then second-string quarterback transfer angst is the worst angst of all.

Oh, Georgia knows.  So do we, just based on this Chip Towers’ report.

Justin Fields might not be out the door just yet, but it appears he’s heading that way.

Asked if she could confirm reports that her son intends to transfer from Georgia, Fields’ stepmother said she could not. But she also didn’t deny them.

“We’re not at liberty to discuss anything,” Jo Ann Claudrick Fields said via telephone Monday night. “We’re not confirming or denying anything. We have not made any decisions.”

That’s a bad “so you’re saying there’s a chance” joke, Jo Ann.

Mark Schlabach reports that this has been an ongoing thing for a while now.

“[Fields transferring] is a possibility, but we expect him to play in the Sugar Bowl,” the source said. “It’s not done. He practiced [Monday] and practiced his ass off. He’s going to explore what’s out there. He might come back.”

The source said that Fields and his father have had multiple meetings with Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart about his future over the past few weeks, and that Fields hasn’t formally requested a transfer, nor has he been placed in the NCAA’s transfer portal, which notifies other schools that he’s interested in leaving.

As far as that last point goes, life comes at you fast sometimes.

Freshman quarterback Justin Fields has told the Georgia coaching staff he’s looking into transferring after the conclusion of the 2018 season.

Fields asked to have his name included on the NCAA Transfer Portal list. The transfer portal takes the place of the release student athletes once needed from their coaches before they could speak with other schools.

So far, this is simply at the information gathering stage for Fields and his family.  The big question remains how soon he can expect to play if he transfers.  As I’ve mentioned, if he has to sit out a year before being eligible, then it makes less sense to go, because of the possibility that if Fromm’s career continues on its current trajectory, he becomes a likely early departee for the NFL draft, which means Fields would have the chance to start at Georgia in 2020.

However, we’re in the new age of NCAA transfers, so perhaps you should get to know Thomas Mars.

Fields and his family are expected to consult with attorney Thomas Mars. Mars was instrumental in helping a number of Ole Miss student athletes appeal the NCAA rule that requires transfers between FBS schools to sit out one year. Those athletes, notable Shea Patterson of Michigan, were allowed to play immediately.

Appeal what?  Glad you asked.  Andy Staples explains one possible line of argument here:

If freshman quarterback Justin Fields wants to leave Georgia and transfer to another school as USA Today’s Dan Wolken reported Monday night, the former five-star recruit from Kennesaw, Ga., could use the same new NCAA transfer waiver guidelines that helped Shea Patterson play this year at Michigan after transferring from Ole Miss. And Fields might have an even stronger case than Patterson did.

In April, the NCAA’s Division I Council provided new guidance to schools regarding waivers for undergraduate transfers who felt they shouldn’t have to complete the NCAA-mandated year-in-residence before taking the field for their new team. Here are those guidelines. Read No. 1 very carefully.

1. The transfer is due to documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete’s control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete;

… During Georgia’s win against Tennessee on Sept. 29, Georgia baseball player Adam Sasser was overheard by other students in the stands yelling, “Put the [n-word] in.” Sasser allegedly was referring to Fields, who backed up sophomore Jake Fromm. While the accusation against Sasser was being investigated by Georgia’s Equal Opportunity Office, Sasser was dismissed from the baseball team.

All of this has been documented by Georgia. So if Fields makes the waiver request, the NCAA panel that reviews that request would have access to all that information.

And it wouldn’t be a stretch at all if, in 2019, a young black man such as Fields said his safety and well-being might be affected by continuing to stay at a school where a white fellow athlete would refer to a black athlete by that word—even if it was lobbed from the stands while the player was on the field. Even if Fields wanted to transfer exclusively for playing time reasons, the NCAA would be foolish to challenge such an assertion and Georgia officials would be crazy to do anything except wish Fields well as he plays next season at his new school. No matter what anyone considers the real reason for the transfer, trying to force Fields to sit out would only make everyone else look terrible.

Sure, it’s a real stretch, but while I disagree with Andy’s “even stronger case” characterization, it really doesn’t matter because his bottom line reason is right — it’s a terrible look for Georgia to contest it.

Just not for the reason he suggests.  Kirby’s made it clear he’ll go after as many five-star kids as he can take at any key position, regardless of the backlog it may create.  He’s selling opportunity, so what kind of message does it send to recruits if he fights a kid’s subsequent transfer attempt when the logjam reaches critical mass?  From his standpoint, the most important thing is for the pipeline to be refilled constantly.

Now, two points need to be made here.  One, Fields hasn’t made a final decision, per Schlabach and Nabulsi.  In fact, he’s still practicing with the team and is expected to play in the Sugar Bowl.  All signs point to his leaving, but if he hasn’t quite pulled the trigger yet, I suspect that gets back to the NCAA waiver question.

Second, I’m sure there are going to be a lot of fingers pointed at the coaches as to how Fields was used this season, with that being the subtext behind the transfer decision.  Occam’s razor suggests otherwise to me.

Fromm, meanwhile, developed into one of the best quarterbacks in the country. The sophomore is third in the nation in passer efficiency rating (175.81) with 2,537 yards, 27 touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Fromm will be a junior next season…

I think Fields was sincere when he made his decision to sign with Georgia and said he wasn’t afraid of competition.  I think Smart was sincere when he told Fields and his family the freshman would have a legitimate chance to win the starting job this season.  Fromm simply made that impossible.

It’s a little ironic, then, to complain about the coaches’ work with Fields while noting Fromm’s remarkable improvement in year two.  There’s a track record at work there suggesting that Fields may be in for better times were he to stay.  I even suspect that may be a factor in his decision making about whether to stay or go.  In the end, though, if Fields believes he can leave and start immediately, I don’t see any way he stays in Athens.

However it goes, more power to him.  Everybody has to do what’s best for himself.

  1. I’m sorry, but if that lawyer uses that crap to win a hardship transfer, I’ll lose a lot of respect for Fields. The university did exactly the right thing when the facts came to light even though it hurt our baseball team on the field.

Justin, if you want to transfer, Godspeed and good luck next year when you redshirt as Jacob Eason has done, but to use that episode as a rationale for immediate eligibility, I would have a big problem with it. The Dawg Nation has been extremely supportive of him.

All of this is coming from someone who thinks the transfer rules should be reformed to give a player a free transfer if academically eligible and not in trouble for behavior with his prior coaches.

I wonder how that softball scholarship Fields’ sister signed w/ UGA will play out. Surely they wouldn’t let her go to UGA since it’s such a racist environment.

It’s hard to argue you’re in a hostile environment when the institution took swift action and determined action. I have no doubt a lawyer will use it as it’s likely the only arrow in the quiver, but it’s pretty soft. Especially when his sister chose to follow him and stays.

If he doesn’t want to be here, that’s cool. I get it.

I think the biggest problem with the argument is: where is this place without the loud mouthed bigots?

It’s not like there’s a likely landing spot that doesn’t have it’s fair share of Sassers. They’re everywhere.

            Nope, not even there:

Some say it’s just some viral-video fun, others say it’s cultural appropriation bordering on racism. Who’s right?

It all started on March 14, when @_forevergolden (a fan account for the Alcorn State University Golden Girls dance team) posted a video on Instagram showing current team captain Elexis Wilson dancing with her teammates as they entered the Alcorn stadium for the season opener in September 2017. The video proceeded to rack up about 30k views from @_forevergolden’s 19k Instagram followers.

But everything changed when Mark Villasana, aka @bottledfleet on Twitter, set the routine (originally to “Stay,” by ’90s R&B girl-group Eternal) to “Dreams,” the 1977 Fleetwood Mac song. That’s when the Internet kinda broke—and “Dreams” climbed its way back to the Billboard Top 20 for rock songs. Reminder: A song written IN 1977 (!!) made it to the top 20 in the last week of MARCH 2018! Wild, right?

But not everyone’s happy with the clip’s rapid rise to Internet fame. Andy Baio, a [white] blogger and a co-founder of Kickstarter, was among those who pointed out that across the tweet’s thousands and thousands of shares, the Golden Girls were only rarely credited for their sweet moves. You can read more from Baio about the historical and cultural context behind the clip here, but for now know that he’s suggested people unthinkingly sharing the “Dreams” version are disrespecting the historical legacy of drumline/drill team/dance team at historically black colleges and universities in the South—and maybe even engaging in a kind of digital blackface.

FYI; Sasser and Fields are very close friends, have been for a while and still are. Sasser’s comment was “put MY n****r back in” after Fields was replaced at qb. Sasser used the term the same way black people do when they talk about each other.

I’m sure the lawyer will go down that path if he thinks it will work in his client’s best interest but the facts don’t support the argument.

Fields and his family is expected to consult with attorney Thomas Mars……..That’s really all you need to know. Yes, if there is a way get him immediately eligible, the attorney will use. It’s what they do. If Fields decides to leave, the best look is probably going to be to wish him well and not fight a waiver. It’s looked bad for Saban, it’ll look even worse for Kirby. If the attorney goes the race route, it won’t look good for UGA. Doesn’t matter that it was an isolated incident. There is a polarization that exists in this country today and things don’t have to be true in order for that assertion to become reality. Don’t belive me? The overwhelming majority of policemen in this country are hero’s, IMO. You won’t get that same opinion when broken down by demographics.

As soon as the waiver is granted, Fields and Mars will be totally gracious about the end result, just as was the case with Patterson and nobody will GAS.

I agree with you. I’m just not sure Kirby wouldn’t try to fight it. I saw him fight a kid who wanted to transfer to Miami, right after he championed an Alabama kid’s right to transfer here. I know the whole grad transfer deal, it still didn’t look good. Using that information, will he fight this?

Exactly! The sad thing, for me, is that tension between the races hasn’t been this high since the 60’s. It doesn’t have to be true. It doesn’t have to be right. People will take the ball and run with it knowing full well it’s BS. It used to be mostly the uneducated who fell pray to unsubstantiated race card issues. In the current environment, some of the most educated leaders actively look for ways to exploit and sensationalize them.

The 60s had more visible tension and genuine issues to get resolved, but there was a big difference: folks on both sides wanted to find solutions to come together and live/work together. It was about changing laws and policies to insure there was change, and opportunities. That was to achieve a united society in America, not a white/black fractured solution.

Today there is more undercurrent of true hate and wanting to divide to provide for different cultures…not a united one. That seems a more impossible goal to achieve, particularly with such open bitterness. There are many flashpoints that could ignite the entire situation, and they all get covered by the 24 hour news cycles. Feels so different to me. I was optimistic in the 60s, much less so in these times, imo. Lack of honest leadership on both sides is especially troubling.

eethomas is likely correct. Haselwood gets a pass happy Big12 offense, Fields goes to a program who uses his skill set into the NFL and has a history of playing transfer QBs.

I was going to post a similar sentiment last night. Not sure who’s whispering in Fields’ ear (or maybe blowing smoke up his ass), but I hope he’s not taking this decision too lightly. I hope, along with Kirby, all his people are explaining the good & the bad to him… pros/cons of transferring (i.e. systems, development, playing opportunities, etc) and being honest with him about his skill development. Many times it’s easier to just start anew somewhere else, the problem is that’s not always the best or right decision for each individual’s situation.

It’s the cool calm and leadership stuff between the ears part along with the self drive motivation, work ethic etc that makes Fromm better than most college QBs. Fields decided between Clemson and UGA. If he gets a waiver to play immediately at tech, then he will be guaranteed to play against both us and Clemson every year. Keep a close eye on who Collins hires as OC and QBS coach.

Most every school he would consider recruited him and know people in his circle of family, friends, and coaches.

Good post Senator. Agree with most of what you wrote. I do think the coaches could have done a better with the games Fields was used in. Why not let him air it out when he went in for the blowout games. And why put him in at all during the Bama game? Didn’t make sense to me to put him in and let him hand off as much as he did in the blowouts when he needed work in the passing game. Also, didn’t make sense to keep using him against really good teams when everyone knew he was in there to run the ball.

Yeah, I certainly can’t argue with how Fromm progressed this year, but there has to be a better plan for Fields than the random one play handoff. I’d argue that was literally the worst plan they could have devised. It did nothing positive for Fields, and it hurt whatever momentum Fromm and the offense had going at the time.

Fields wasn’t going to beat out Fromm this year, and I’d bet not next year. But the in-game experience did him no favors. And yes, I understand that was probably a reflection of what they saw in practice.

The only time I thought he got useful reps was the UMass game. He could have done similar in several of the other cupcake games.

We have no idea about the conversations between the coaching staff and the players but 2 things are apparent to me.

    1) I hate to speculate about people I’ve never met but Fields’ body language and facial expressions didn’t scream, “I’m a great leader and teammate” or “I’m here to help the team”. It seemed pretty clear who he thought was the best quarterback and kinda pouted through every blowout win. If I can sense that you know the coaches and players could too.

    2) The staff was indecisive and botched this one. If they weren’t going to split time and let him QB rather than wildcat handoff they should’ve simply said, “Look, you’re a great talent but we need you to develop into the great college QB you’re no doubt going to be. So unless you flat out beat Jake in practice, we’re going to redshirt you this but we are going to have some packages for your skillset that we will practice and will unroll in an emergency. Otherwise we’re going to save those for the SECCG and keep you as a wildcard weapon to help with a playoff run while building some space between you and Jake.” At least then he and the team would know where he stood.

Agree. Didn’t like the way they did it but getting him prepared did seem a high priority. Hidden in all of this is the question is the fit of UGA’s offense for a DT quarterback. I know the idea of helping Fields become a better pro-style QB was the goal but this could impact our ability to attract multi-threat QBs in the future.

I think he does as well, but we are surmising he will develop the non-athletic part of being a total, finished QB. I read he only played 2 seasons as a starter in HS, believe Fromm played in almost 50 games in HS, and at a higher level. Regardless, he didn’t hit the UGA campus with the same chance to step right in. Could be that Kirby didn’t give him more opportunities to run the total offense because he didn’t want him to fail publicly and hurt his development. Some at practice observed the same reading the defenses issue, and the happy feet if no one was open quickly. Fields wouldn’t be the 1st QB to need 2-3 years for the game to slow down for them. It is the only reason I can see why he wasn’t allowed to do more in those early season games. As THE backup on this team, you certainly would want to see him be comfortable in live action, if you felt he was ready.

If Fromm goes down then the path is obvious but it’s not like the staff was preparing Fields with the game snaps he was getting. He just handed it off. Why not give him just give him meaningful second string practice snaps and just redshirt him?

Why not be upfront with a clear plan, preserve his eligibility and give the 3rd string guy the mop up duty hand offs? Hell if they had done that, if fields still decides to transfer because he didn’t beat out Fromm at least we would’ve given the 3rd string guy reps while we recruited the next most popular man on campus. I am a big Kirby Smart and Jim Cheney believer but they botched this one from where I sit but I’m just a guy on the internet.

Can we agree that Kirby and Chaney are not idiots? Ok, then we can assume there was some sort of reason for how Fields was used.

We can agree Kirby and Chaney are not idiots. But we can also have differing opinions on whether the way Fields was deployed this season was beneficial to him/the team or not. I’d say not given the way he never seemed to progress and when he was in a game it only messed up momentum/play calling. I think most would agree Fields was deployed in a very uneven way throughout the season.

To me it wasn’t that he was only running. That I think most reasonable people can agree that they must have seen in practice that he was missing something in the throwing department that they wouldn’t let him pull the trigger on pass plays during meaningful game time. To me, it should’ve been like Shockley – he was coming in the 3rd series and he got the series. Period. And then do mopup duty. But it seemed so haphazard the way he was deployed – maybe just a single play a series in one game, given full series the next game, then not even in a game at all, then back to single plays in the SEC.

That said, I think Fields was handled very poorly by our staff.

Beyond a real stretch, if the NCAA approves that, or UGA doesn’t defend itself about not having a safe environment for students of all backgrounds, it is huge game changer and completely unrealistic. This was a student thinking he was funny attempting to entertain his friends while under the influence of alcohol. To make this into an environment where Fields is intimidated to play, or attend classes, should be rejected within minutes. It was bad behavior for sure, stupid without a doubt, but hardly worthy of serious consideration in this case. That was one voice, out of 90K+, almost all of which support Fields and what he might do at UGA. A few rows around him heard it, players on the field did not. Does anyone not think there are people walking around any city that might not like them for any one of hundreds of reasons? Every day, every where.

I had hoped Fields, and his father/family had realized he still had work to do to achieve his goals and would be patient to improve and earn his way on the field. Either that is wrong, or he just doesn’t feel he can ever work his way past Fromm. Both of those say he needs to move on because he is anxious to get his chance earlier than will occur. JUCO the way Cam did it for one year would be one option, transferring like Eason did, and waiting one year, would be the other. I don’t want this to split the team because he misjudged his relative talent against an established QB. Just a bad decision on his part 15 months ago.

Fields has great potential, but this situation plays out on teams all over the country, every season. This case just happens to be higher profile than others, and affects a team near and dear to us. Parting ways now seems best with all this breaking before the season is over. Would love to keep him and see him play QB at UGA but the distraction factor would be far worse next year. Hope he continues to develop and does well wherever he ends up. Also hope Kirby has a solid backup in mind for 2019. Given the late timing in recruiting, we may need a grad transfer for next year.

Of course, the attorney’s goal is to win regardless of the validity of the method. I am just saying the slope will be impossibly slick if either yields ground on something this far fetched. I know many of you would like to see transfers with no borders at all, but that isn’t where the NCAA stands at the moment.

Come on Senator. This is all about Mars putting this whole race thing in the media and in the court of public opinion. That’s the leverage. So how does UGA let Fields go without effectively admitting that it is a racist institution. Are we going to bring in diversity trainers to BM. That will surely appease the half of the country that already thinks our governor’s election was stolen… which is still being advocated by the left.

UGA blew it by caving on the Sasser thing. He was drunk and did not mean it in a derogatory way as I understand it. Rather with a manner wanting to show solidarity with Fields. It was a stupid thing to say obviously in any respect.

But now the can is open so it is no surprise that others will run with it. That’s politics in America today.

Uga could cave again… but that won’t end it. UGA could fight it and allow the attorneys to make it a spectacle and put UGA on trial. Or they could self report to the ncaa claiming one of their players has hired an agent and may no longer be eligible… which would put it in the lap of the ncaa. This last option makes me smile but obviously would not make things better.

None are good. Time usually helps these things go away but that is out the window because Mars had already started his media campaign… two days before signing day.

Hopefully everything has already been settled by the time I hit “post comment” on this rather verbose rant. And hopefully Kirby continues to learn from his mistakes. Punt the ball.

I must have missed where Fields and Mars are demanding structural changes to UGA.

It’s a ploy to shame the NCAA into granting a waiver. That’s all. UGA will move on and keep recruiting top-3 classes.

But feel free to get your right-wing panties in a wad, if it makes you feel better.

Sure it is. That’s why they mentioned the racial slur in the original leaked article by Wolken. Because that is ALL about the ncaa and it’s policies regarding transfers.

My understanding is that the ncaa would have no problem with a transfer if UGA did not contest it. And UGA will probably not contest it if it is out of conference and out of the southeast.

Many ncaa regs are byzantine and the transfer rules are surely one of them. Make the scholarships either one, four or five years and that would probably go a long way to addressing the issue as well as provide more parity to the game. The five stars can have their one year scholarships if the want them… free to move around from conference to conference with some other minor restrictions and with the risk of injury… while a three star as an example could negotiate a four or five year free ride up front. Maybe this current situation will at least bring this one issue to a head this off season.

As far as Fields I have stated I hate the way he was used and probably lied to by our coaches. Still no reason to bring race into the equation and in effect threaten the state school.

Come on Senator. Mars put the article in the USA today with the racial slur as the threat that he is willing to put UGA on trial in the media and the court of public opinion. It had nothing to do with the ncaa unless you want to convince me that him convincing the ncaa that UGA football has racial problems in no way threatens UGA.

I think we both can agree that it’s past time that the ncaa brought their transfer regs in line with the way the game has changed and the money involved for the coaches as well as potential money for the kids in a pro career. They just need to be careful of the unintended consequences.

                • Here’s how Staples paraphrased it.

And it wouldn’t be a stretch at all if, in 2019, a young black man such as Fields said his safety and well-being might be affected by continuing to stay at a school where a white fellow athlete would refer to a black athlete by that word—even if it was lobbed from the stands while the player was on the field.

And here’s how he defended the school.

And here’s my distinction between the two, again.

I can’t help it if your knee keeps jerking when you hear race, but not everyone will react as you are.

  19. If this is true and he leaves because he’s to much of a coward to compete for a starting job (which is the only real reason it would be) then good riddance. He would be a cancer on the team if he hasn’t been already. He was clearly no more than the second best quarterback and wasn’t ready to consistently play at a high level. I was all for the graduate transfer rules but feared it would devolve into this very thing. Low character kids or low character parents or both up and leaving because things didn’t go to suit them with absolutely no concern for their teammates or the coaches that have spent the last year investing in them. Nothing but pure selfishness. I would not release him or anyone else that is not a graduate or under a true hardship such as family sickness or just to far from home even. But not just I can’t handle not being the starter even for a year. Pathetic!

The best things most people ever get outside of love is something they are willing to work for. That is a value that use to be taught by society in general and parents. Now only occasionally does anyone truly care about anyone enough to teach that principle.

If I remember correctly Hazelwood’s decomment was after his words, “ UGA needs to throw the ball more, more progressive in the passing game. Fields should be playing more. I’ll keep a eye on their progress through the season “
Perhaps all things happen for a reason. Duh ! AAU now has interceded college football. No wonder there has been better things to do on a fall Saturday that watching a college football game with 100’s of adds in the stadiums, corporporate boxes and 4/12 hour games because of the insertion of the 200+ TV commercials in the second half. Oh and by the way glad you Dawgs fan were able to get your 2 Sugar Bowl tickets ( $35,000 donations) and ante up for a weeks stay in a hotel + meals for a week.

I wonder how many of the people railing against Fields’ presumed disloyalty would be the least bit troubled if, say, Kyler Murray or Quinnen Williams expressed an interest in transferring to UGA.

Look, Fields is a huge asset to the team and I hope he stays, but why should he care what I think? Particularly if he believes he could start just about anywhere else in the country right away (which he almost certainly could)?

Yes, it’d be disappointing if he left, but there’s no reason to impugn his character or belittle him as a diva over this. Leave that sort of bellyaching to the chuds who carpet-bomb recruits with tweets before signing day and then throw a tantrum if the object of their affection signs with someone else.

Meh, its a backup QB. Other than the need for depth, i don’t see this having a big impact on 2019. I trust the coaches to get us through it and Kirby certainly has a plan especially with asking Plumlee to blue shirt when he knew this was a possibility.

    My tea leaf reading….

Fields has smart parents. They’re keeping their options open and looking for leverage. If there is a spot on an elite team and he can play next year he is gone. If it’s not quite that simple, and I bet it isn’t that simple, his family will sit down and talk to Kirby and Co about playing time and pass attempts next season.

Sometimes Kirby doesn’t like the process or how the sausage gets made.

I think Fields’ frustration, and that of his parents, matched that of the fans when he was put in for mop-up duty and handed the ball off three times in a row. Not every time – but enough for him (and most of us if we are honest) to get annoyed that he wasn’t allowed to run the offense. I understand why he would want to transfer to get more playing time immediately. He is going to be a real force for somebody. I hate that it won’t be us. I don’t take it personally, but dang, kids his size who can run and throw do not grow on trees and letting him slip through our hands because we put him on the field in bizarre situations (where the whole stadium knew he would run) or simply to practice handing off to our 4th string running back is frustrating.

I was never enamored with Jacob Eason or Justin Fields- always thought Fromm was our QB of the future since the App State game last year. Also, I think there is better than a 50% chance Fromm is here for all 4 years. If we win the National Champ and he is a 1st rounder, then he’ll go but other than that I say he returns for senior year. Even if Fromm does leave after next season, the way Kirby recruits he will have enough time to get a guy ready to drive the Porsche.

I wish Fields well but get gone and stay gone if that is what his family wants.
