“… they’re excited and want to get it over with.”

Hey, it’s early signing day!  By all accounts, recruits will be flocking to fax machines and other devices to make their choices known today.

Obviously, we’re interested in particular in who may be Athens-bound.  Here’s a partial list of some battles Kirby’s fighting today.  Here’s another with more of a national perspective (although it’s to Smart’s credit that Georgia pops up a good bit there).

Consider this post the place to keep up and share today’s signing news in the comments.  I’ll get the party started with this.

Damned good start.  Welcome aboard, Mr. Smith.

We got Smith now all we need is Trey Sanders and Nakobe Dean and it will be a good day.

If Fields is in fact leaving, that’s good for Plumlee not to have to blueshirt. Should get a scholly now.

I think the issue with Plumlee is we want him to early entry and he intends to remain in high school to play his senior season of baseball. Good on him. I’m not real sure if that changes the blueshirt scenario or not.

Plumlee may now be flipping to Ole Miss.

  3. I hope we have a nice class but yesterday is exactly why I stopped following recruiting the way I used to. I am interested in seeing if we sign a nice RB after Emery flipped to LSU. It also looks like Pittman is being Pittman.

I’m sure a few heads just exploded in the Yellowhammer state. Alabama just lost one of its five star commits to Michigan.

  5. Kirby’s press conference this afternoon should be interesting. I imagine we may get to see his first “Talk to the Dasani bottle” moment.

Well, we flipped a 4-star dual-threat QB from Ohio State, so …

Had just wandered over to say we flipped QB Dwan Mathis from tOSU. Kirby doin’ work!

WOW! Talk about Kirby doing a triple backflip somersault and landing on his feet! One thing that concerned me about the QB names being bandied about was the size – all seemed about 6 foot or less. But Mathis is 6’4”, 200. This is just a terrific get for us!

A couple of telling things (at least to me) from the Dawgnation article.

“Terence Mathis, Dwan’s father, told DawgNation that his son was thrilled to talk with the Georgia staff on Sunday and receive the offer to enroll early and be a part of the football program.”

Sunday huh? Right before the transfer news leaked?

“But now Georgia has presented a great opportunity for my son, and we’ve been informed that if he does his part as a student-athlete, he’ll have the opportunity to be the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart this fall.

“Dwan understands the program and the role he has been recruited for, to learn from the current quarterback and not be divisive or cause any problems. He respects the head coach and Coach (Jim) Chaney and he is ready to come in and put his head down and go to work.”

Seems to be a pretty clear message there.

I don’t want to speculate on what may or may not have gone on behind the scenes. I hope Fields does well wherever he ends up (barring something coming out or happening in the coming weeks), and I look forward to seeing what the new guys can do.

They still use fax machines?! Lucky recruiting wasn’t a big deal during pony express days or we might still be using that process now.

Appears Stetson Bennett maybe heading back to Athens as QB2, it would make a lot of sense.

Source? We could use another QB. Will he be walking on again?

My father was in the room when the call came from Kirby. He listened to the entire conversation via speakerphone. Bennett has been offered a scholly and has accepted the offer. Stetson will be on campus for the next bowl practice.

Stetson knows the system. Tells us that Fields is really gone..not that we didn’t already know.

That’s good. Sounds like QB is shored up.

Good luck to Fields wherever he lands (aOSU?) and glad Bennett is back. I’m guessing this means Plumlee is going to Ole Miss?

Two guys from Hattiesburg…one of them tied to HS football, are willing to bet that Plumlee will be the starter when Fromm leaves. We have QB’s. Now comes Mathis. UGA will be fine.

Trey Sanders, #1 RB in the nation with a ton of momentum to the good guys over the past few weeks, apparently chooses Alabama because of their more favorable depth chart at RB.

What a time to be a Georgia fan.

Nakobe Dean could be the next Roquan. Go Dawgs!

What an impressive kid. Straight A’s through high school, 5* football player (#1 at his position) and wants to major in engineering. Good luck to him, and I look forward to he and Nolan Smith terrorizing offenses for the next several years.

UGA landed Nakobe Dean, the #1 ILB. That was a great get at an area of need, and kept him away from Alabama (and the bagman at Ole Miss).

Judging by Twitter today, Alabama fans are more concerned with Kirby Smart and UGA than they are with their own coach and program. It’s actually weirdly obsessive.

I was looking at RBR and noticed that myself, though one fan sarcastically said (about all the doom and gloom posts) that they would have to settle for the best recruiting class this year versus the best of all time that everyone was expecting.

But yeah, they are absolutely worried. They know they barely escaped the last two times, this last time with one of their best teams against a “down” Georgia team.

Saban’s dynasty starts with superior talent. They know that. He’s a “do more with more” guy, not a “do more with less” guy.

Kirby had two very good shots at him and come up empty in two straight 4th quarters. I would expect shot #3 will be back in Atlanta next December. They know it. Kirby knows it. Saban knows it.

Maybe third time will be the charm.

Even Tom Crean must envy the overall height of this recruiting class. Four defensive linemen that measure 6’5″ and up! Even the QB is 6’6″.
    – There’s no defensive linemen left in Tennessee, Kirby got em all! – Kirby must really be high on Walthour to stick with him like he did. It’s not as if we have many schollies to fill. – And we’ve taken all the fun out of the February signing day. – Overall a great signing day and one big step closer to that natty.

It looks we had a really good day. There’s not a QB controversy anymore and we added depth to the position. Please Jake stay healthy. We added a ton of talent that a lot of other teams would love to have. One more class like the last couple and we should be fully weaponized. I think I’ll have a cold beer.
