“On the outside, people just think he’s mean as hell.”

So, as the AJ-C reminisces about how Georgia Tech players will remember the genius, I thought I’d give y’all a similar opportunity.

Personally speaking, I’m particularly fond of the way Johnson threw his defensive coordinators under the bus.  I’ll always remember how he was critical of Ted Roof after the last Georgia loss in historic BDS — and never forget that Johnson was unable to win a single game against the Dawgs there — despite the fact that Tech’s offense completely sputtered against Georgia’s defense all game long.

As he heads off into the sunset, it’s with the absolute certainty that the triple option can never fail; it can only be failed.

Now, please, dry your eyes and share a few of your fonder memories in the comments.

I recall the game a few years back in BDS where Tech was getting ready to kick a moderately long field goal right before the half ended. As the kicker kicked it, it sailed thru the uprights for three points. But Johnson had called a time out right before the snap, so the points were taken off. After the time out, the kicker tried it again… and missed it. The look on his face after that screw up was comedy gold!

I can actually. He’d be perfect on GPTV during the high school playoff games.
I can’t imagine anyone wanting to sit beside him though.

I think of all the recruiting battles he had with West Georgia, Jacksonville State, Mercer, Belmont… some you win, some you lose.

  5. On the one hand I hated the extra time we had to spend getting ready for that offense. On the other hand that offense basically ensured they did not compete for any of the top talent. Overall I still think the former will outweigh the latter. I hope so at least.

  9. Tech folks like to refer to him as a “Hall of Fame coach.” If he makes the College Football Hall of Fame it will be for his work at GA Southern not his work at Tech.

On his call-in show before the 2010 game some brave tekkie asked him if he was sensitive to criticism that he’d only won with Chan Gailey’s players. The Genius erupted in fury: ” ‘Chan Gailey’s players’??? What does that even mean???!!!” To most people, it meant Burnett, Thomas, Choice, etc. To the Genius it was a subjective construct at best.

I’ll always remember the smug little smirk he’d have on his face as his quarterback would throw a surprise forward pass, thinking that he was such a genius and had the opposing defense completely surprised and unprepared. And I’ll remember the look of disgust on his face when he’d try it against Georgia and our superior athletes adjusted and defended the pass just as well as we defended the run. You could always tell when Coach Turkey Neck was racking his brain trying to decide who to blame for the failure of a play in his postgame press conference.

Most folks don’t realize that since we hired Vince Dooley in 1964 that any Tech Coach that beat UGA 3 times in their career soon after were replaced by another coach. Some retired, some were fired but all have left with losing records against UGA.
I thought that Johnson would be much more successful than he turned out to be. Adios to our old adversary.

A man even his mother couldn’t like. But he should go out happy today, I think GT is one of the better bets of the bowl season. Minney has been vulnerable to every running team they have faced, and that didn’t even involve the triple option. Holding my nose and betting Tech -5. Johnson should be rewarded for setting their program back a decade or so. Won’t miss his ugly mug and unpleasant comments.

I have to admit I was laughing my ass off as PJ came off the field making goofy faces after Tech beat FSU on a kick-six in 2015. The Noles were ranked in the top 10 and gunning for another playoff bid but got punked by the most hot-garbage of PJ’s many hot-garbage teams. Never liked seeing him happy, but I was ok with it coming at Jimbo’s expense.

Hall of fame coach?? paul THE johnson’s winning percentage against UGA was 27%. Even using trade school calculus, that does NOT get you into the college football hall of fame. It will get you into the Bulldawg hall of fame!! BIG SMILE!!

Great idea. We could hang up his picture next to Reggie Ball’s. Speaking of Reggie, I’m heading that Jeoffrey is considering him for the new GT down & distance coordinator’s position.

Guess I was wrong, GT for got to bring their offensive line. Minney just kicked them sideways, game was unwatchable. Ugh!
