I remember tuning in to watch this Saturday Night Live episode, specifically because Elvis Costello was appearing (replacing the Sex Pistols!). His second song became legendary.
He got banned from the show for that stunt. It wasn’t that the song “Radio, Radio” was that controversial in and of itself, although it was certainly subversive. It was that SNL was live and thus tightly scripted and going off script was disruptive as hell. What you don’t see or hear in that clip is Lorne Michaels giving Costello the bird and screaming at him during the entire song.
Great tune, by the way.
