Today’s question of the day

So, if this is how Georgia’s 2019 depth chart at quarterback looks…

1. Jake Fromm (Jr.)

2. Stetson Bennett (RSoph.)

3. Dwan Mathis (Fr.)

… and, as Jake Rowe puts it, “Fromm’s hold on the starting job is now as strong as any player on the team. That may be the case for any player in America.”, and if Kirby believes that competition brings out the best in any player, does that mean Jake Fromm is headed for a season of regression?

I keed, I keed… I think.

  1. Matthew Downing’s Mom takes great exception to your post. After all, UGA has won every game in which he has played!

If ever the label “raw” fits, it is for Mathis. But he has an interesting upside for sure.

  3. I hope we’re smart enough to put Fromm in bubble wrap this spring and summer.

I don’t worry about Jake working his @$$ off to get better. He’s very likely going to leave Athens holding the school record for wins in a career.

Think about it, ee. We just finished a whole season with little to no production from the back-up QB… Not much changes. Stetson can do what Fields did..at least. I’ll agree that Fields would have (should have) been greatly developing by this fall. Too bad he didn’t want to play a little longer game at Georgia.

While Bennett doesn’t have the upside Fields did, you aren’t far off as to who would have been a safer backup in 2018. I wouldn’t throw too many barbs at SB, saw him in practice all of 2017 and reached out immediately for him when Fields announced he was leaving. Most interesting thing to me is the fit for him in Cheney’s offense, but he can run and throw. Agree that Mathis will spend 2019 learning, and adding some good weight like Eason did. After that, who knows what he has under the hood? Have to wait and see, ohio had some confidence with him and they usually get decent talent. Another Spring Game QBR shootout is on the way!

Biggest thing he must improve on is getting the ball out quicker. A lot of that depends on the scheme and receivers as well.

What if Fromm were to leave after his Junior year? I know everyone is crazy about this Bennett kid but he seriously looks 5′ 8″ when he goes on the field.

After watching Lawrence play last night, Kirby has to be kicking himself for letting him out of the state. He reminds me a lot of Fromm. The only thing standing in our offense’s way is Chaney because Jake is going to have a multitude of weapons to dish the ball to and the best offensive line we have seen in a long time at Georgia.

Everybody in north Georgia knew Lawrence was going to be great. Kirby knew it too. He put his eggs in Fields’ basket and he, and WE all thought that he would someday lead UGA to a NC.
The best laid plans of mice and men and all of that.

Damn, that could not be more wrong. Richt and Schotty screwed up Lawrence’s recruitment early and then Kirby and Chaney did a tremendous job getting us back into it. Lawrence committed to Clemson in December of 2016 after he saw Eason take the job as a true freshman and Fromm already committed here. We really didn’t get in on Fields until late summer ‘17 after his stock skyrocketed and he decommitted from Penn St. And that was after we had missed out on a few more qb’s.

Both you and Ugly are wrong. We didn’t “let him go” or turn to Fields until AFTER Lawrence picked Clemson. Then we went after and got Fields.

Fields got all the ratings love but Lawrence was the win winning the big HS football games.

According to Lawrence himself, we finished a close second.

Derek is right. There was actually a period where we thought we had T Law. Kirby didn’t ‘let him go’. He looked at scheme, the fact that we were coming off a pretty poor year (2016) and went with the known (Clemson) over the unknown (Kirby).

I think it was our showing in 2016. He is a true pocket passer and UGA was a good fit. Remember he grew up as a TN fan, so he wasn’t a kid like Fromm that dreamed of playing between the hedges. Close with us and Clemson until the last few weeks when he seemed to be sliding their way. Those two straight playoff appearances by Clemson, and our 8-5 record, seemed to be the deciding factor. That, and give Dabo some credit, he has a lot of appeal and the players really respond to him. Look at all those guys that came back for 2018, and then showed after the game how they hated leaving that environment, even though they are now very close to “getting paid”.

Refresh my memory, Mac. While TL was being recruited wasn’t Eason the starter and Fromm 2nd? That would have made the QB room a little crowded, methinks.

And Trevor impressed me last night when the took it to Alabama with his legs on that last drive. But to be very honest, his receivers made him look even better than he is. Dabo’s put together quite a passing team.

That one kid from Alabama made T Law look real good several times. A kid from Alabama going out of state to Clemson, hope unreasonable Bama fans lost their minds like unreasonable UGA fans would.

Might need to get your eyes checked. I like Fromm, but Lawrence is in a different league.

He would be the #1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

I got roasted on Sugar Bowl game night for saying that Fromm didn’t look good and I wonder if him not being pushed in practice had an effect. He was the man going into the Florida game but Fields still played and there was always the chance that if Fromm sucked bad Fields could come in…..but after the transfer announcement by Fields (putting his name in the portal) there was ZERO chance Fields was going to play, no matter how bad Fromm may look and I wonder if that had an effect….I got hammered for saying that but I think it cannot be dismissed seeing how bad Fromm played…guess we will never know

Fromm played bad because the o-line couldn’t or wouldn’t give him time and protection and normally reliable receivers were dropping gimmies. Also, Swift couldn’t get going at all. Fromm “is” the best QB in the nation. I would never trade Jake’s brain and football smarts for all the flashy arms in the country.

I don’t know about that, kfoge. I think there might have been quite a bit of pressure on Fromm in the Sugar Bowl. The fact that Kirby let Fields take practice and then attend the game may have had Fromm wondering..”if I screw up a little, will the coach pull me to placate this whiner?”. It was no secret that Kirby wanted to keep Fields..Unless Kirby took Fromm aside at some point and told him not to sweat it, he must have had those thoughts..I could be wrong..I often am…and regardless, Fromm doesn’t sweat easily.

It’s a team game. Lawrence was great but so were the players and coaches around him. For the week leading up, they were focused on the game and not their careers.

They exploited the middle of the field with the passing game and the edges with their backs the way a spread offense should. On the sideline, they communicated and everyone knew their roles.

    • You should have gotten roasted because the entire offense was bad. Do you think Lawrence would have done much better in the Georgia sugar bowl offense? He would have carried us with that OL, those dropped passes, those fumbles and that play calling?

I’m glad Stetson Bennett is back. I think he can and will serve as a good backup QB for this coming season and will also likely be the starting QB for the Dawgs at some time in the future.

If Stetson Bennett is ever our starting QB for any reason other than an injury to Fromm, then our program is in serious trouble.

Likely correct but I have not watched enough game film, and some kids are just gamers. My feeling is Bennett could win the bulk of the games on the schedule but yes we need an elite QB to beat the team needed to get the season over the hump. Again the 1st team D says he makes plays, Ole Miss and A&M beat Bama with QBs that just made plays and Johnny Football isn’t that big. Clemson was sort of the same, their WRs were hauling in any ball that was close to on target.

Fromm seemed to do better once the job was all his. QB is a very mental position. Murray asked Bobo for specific throws to calm him down. Does Fromm need similar treatment? From did remind me in the Texas game of Murray. He did not have a great night but he was running, taking hits and giving it his all which brought back memories of Murray ’13 against Tenn. and Auburn.

Watching the 6’6″ Lawrence look over his line and find last minute open receivers as the pocked collapsed last night made me think Fromm is too short, let alone Bennett. Gritty competitors sure have their fans, but I’m with the poster above – we’re screwed if Bennett ever sees the field as something other than mop-up duty.

I didn’t see Plumlee on the list. Is he gone? I was still expecting him for the summer semester.

Anyway, I think we’re in better shape overall at QB heading in to 2019 than we were going in to 2018. If Jake had gotten injured in ’18 and we were forced to go with Fields, we would’ve had to make major adjustments to dumb down the offense. Plus, we didn’t have any backup for Fields, who tended to tuck it in. Had all the makings of a fiasco.

Flash forward to ’19, we have a 2 year returning starter in Fromm. Bennett picked up a full year of experience at JC. Two 4-star athletic recruits in training. Seems like a pretty solid situation to me. Still a 2nd signing day coming up too. As usual, Kirby’s incredible roster management has turned lemons into lemonade.

Waiting for Smart to get ruthless again like when DC at Bama.
Lot of “receiving” walked out of the offense when those three juniors decided to go pro.
Here is the rub, do you think those three are as good as what Bama and Clemson showed last night. Bama dropped a few but Clemson caught everything that came their way. Look back at that Texas game and the passes not made and or not caught.
Even with no running game the passes were getting out.
Clemson has a passing game. Dawgs to not. Post game negative comments about Bama is they could not run the ball. Look at Clemson’s rushing stats in 1st half, and look at the scoreboard.
Beat Bama by throwing the ball and playing solid defense, and protecting the passer. Fromm made a great throw to Nauta on third down. A classic. Like Bama last night in the red zone, no points. Turning point in game. So after that first down what did Chaney do.
Where were those turn pro juniors in those next three downs.

Have any of you guys watched any tape on Plumlee?. This guy can play and he is incredibly fast, just ask Nakobe. He lit up Nakobes team in the state final. I don’t know why no one is talking about him. I think he will beat out anyone at QB on this team for the backup spot.

I think so too, but he won’t be on campus for Spring and Summer…he pretty much won’t be a factor until ’20…But he has some great skills.
I hope he shows up and competes. I also think the team is ok at QB for right now..
We’ll know a heck of a lot more after the Spring game.

I’m anxious to see what Dwan can do after a year of SEC strength and conditioning, plus QB coaching. It’s easier to put on pounds of muscle than inches of height. I think he’s got the most upside of any of the backups, including Plumlee if he signs.

Now, if we change our system and let Plumlee run around like Kyler Murray, then yeah. But I don’t see Coach Smart doing that.

It should be a great competition between Dwan and Plumlee..Both of them have the opportunity to be the starter in one or two years and to hold that job for a couple of years. Spring game should be interesting this year and very interesting next year.
