Today, in what might have been and what actually was

Charlie Pierce asked this weekend’s most plaintive question.

Well, speaking as someone who was there for it, there are a lot of answers:  injuries, that effing Gurley suspension (Greg McGarity, Man of Jello), a quarterback in Hutson Mason who took a few games to get his confidence under him, transition under a new defensive coordinator, etc., etc., etc.

Sigh.

Although it turns out there’s at least one person who has no regrets.

There are so many great moments from Gurley I had the pleasure of seeing, but I think nothing demonstrates how much his determination to excel made him the great player he was than the way he took over the game in Georgia’s monstrous 2013 comeback against Georgia Tech.

Too bad Mike Bobo had a brain fart and forgot about his playcalling there next season at Columbia.

Charlie Pierce’s Tweet is why Twitter is the scourge of our planet. Apparently this idiot doesn’t realize football is a team sport comprised of both offense and defense and 21 other players besides RB.

Gurley has to rank up there in the “what could’ve been” category, when you factor injuries, the suspension, and other team issues not in his control.

    DGD regardless.

Soo many great Gurley memories. The kickoff return for a TD – wasn’t it his first game? Half the bama D hanging on as the true freshman rumbles into the endzone in the sec championship. The high flying TD against gtu. Stiff-arming the Vandy player all the way down to the turf. “The hurdle”. Just an incredible RB – who’s a threat to take it to the house any time he gets the ball.

The only game that we ever lost in which all three of those guys were available to play was the 2014 South Carolina game. And you can’t really blame the offense for that one; we scored 35 points (we did have that missed opportunity on goal-to-go in the 4th quarter). Looks like the tweeter didn’t really do his homework, but that’s Twitter for you.

It’s been fun watching them, and I’ll add Swift (and I think/hope Zeus) to that group soon. RBU indeed.

Georgia is represented well on all four teams in the NFL conference finals.

Great for them and great for recruiting.

Because it isn’t basketball, tennis, or golf. Football the ultimate team game with two dozen+ moving parts, and a great deal of good fortune (injuries, bounces, calls). That’s how you lose, even one meaningful game. It was never exclusively on any one of them.

I’ve been really proud watching Michel and Gurley in the playoffs. Frankly, I think the Rams offense is what ours SHOULD look like when it’s clicking on all cylinders…….or at least, I wouldn’t mind striving for that. You know, sending 20 analysts, Coley and Kirby to go stain Sean McVay for a week in May.

The truth is, we shouldn’t have lost any of the three games that season. Even the Florida game with Gurley out. Remember the team that won the East that year? The same Missouri team we completely dismantled in Columbia. Probably didn’t have enough depth to beat Bama, but it should have been an unbeaten regular season. All three losses were Richt brain fart games. Losing to teams he should beat. I really think his long-term future in Athens was decided by McGarity after the Florida disaster. It just took the dumpster fire of 2015 to seal his fate.

I hope our new OC watches this film. Do you see the QB motion to the bench, “I got this”. Fl. stacked the box and sends a safety. QB and the TB see this and ..TD..

They did not see this because they are great players (which they were/are). They saw it because they were coached to look for it. Then execute.
