Cry havoc and let loose the trolls of war.

Connor Riley gives us the heads up on when it’s exactly time to panic that Kirby Smart doesn’t have a defensive coordinator.

So when Georgia fans should start to worry about the lack of a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach? I would say Monday, because that would likely mean that the ship has sailed on Elam, who is Georgia’s top recruiting target at this point.

First of all, back to my longstanding point that you don’t make hiring decisions based on trying to obtain or retain a recruit.  It’s a pointless and stupid strategy to let the recruiting trail wag the coaching dog.

Second, are there really kids out there who don’t feel assured by Smart saying the defense will continue on as it has, because… well, because Kirby Smart?

Other than that, good point.

  1. I saw that headline on Dawgnation this morning and thought. “yeah – not going to click on that one.”

While I agree with your premise, it’s also noteworthy that Kirby allowed Justin Fields to wag the dog. His use of him could only have been an effort to keep him on campus. That said I hope he learned a lesson and will play every down to win regardless what means to an egotistical kid who got beaten out in a fair competition.

Kirby’s boss’ boss does not want the racial incident to be highlighted anymore. Factor that into how Fields’ situation was handled.

Fields and Sasser were friends, played baseball together coming up in High School. Agree, UGA just wants it to go away, but the true story doesn’t help JF and his need for immediate eligibility.

IF things were so bad in Athens, no way the Fields family let’s the daughter enroll at UGA.

Not the first time this has been posted here on GTP. Just curious if there is any source that confirms this. Has JF ever come out and said he’s my friend and he didn’t mean it the way it was taken? Would greatly change the narrative.

I’m on pins and needles about the outcome of the recruiting weekend.

DawgNation, except for game coverage of basketball or breaking news, needs to take a break. Four guys constantly speculating and sensationalized headlines with nothing but guesswork in the text has become a joke. If it even hints of bad news about UGA they blow it up. I don’t expect the AJC to be a PR machine for UGA but neither should it be creating a doomsday narrative just for the internet.

Saw this headline and was sure it was gonna be subtitled, “Playpen II”…

    Amen. Amen. And Amen.
Thank you Senator and “Bright idea”. Your comments are spot on!
I’ve said enough about that site lately.
    I would add one thing.
Perhaps they should rename their site, but take out the word Dawg.
Munson was a “homer”. So is the Senator.
May not agree with the Senator at times, but I know where his heart and soul lies about the Dawgs. When he writes and comments, you read with trust and confidence.

Meanwhile Saban is practically alone in Tuscaloosa.

    I’d say we’re ok.

If Georgia made coaching decisions based on pleasing recruits, we would have had Mark Fox coaching last night against Kentucky and we would have had Ashton Hagans on our team (for another month and a half). Hell, for that matter, if it was about pleasing recruits we would have fired Jim Chaney midway through the season and brought in an air raid coordinator to please Jadon Haselwood and Justin Fields. Kirby Smart is the architect of our defense and our defensive backfield. Whoever he hires or promotes to hold the defensive coordinator position, Kirby is going to have the final say. If a recruit is going to demand to be a part of the HR department at the University of Georgia, I suspect we will not end up signing that individual. That’s not a comment on the recruit, either, as this kid likely knows Kirby is the coach he’s ultimately playing for. That comment is about the largely clueless artificial deadline the AJC decided to impose on the hiring process.

Good point about Hagans and I was going to say the same thing. He is example #1 about why you don’t make coaching decisions based on recruiting. Yes, if Fox was here we’d have Hagans, and we’d probably have a similar record. Fox had KCP and Maten, both SEC Players of the Year, yet he couldn’t win with them. I like Fox, but it was time to move on, even if it hurts not having Hagans (and it certainly does).

With all the “woe is me chatter” I’m now at peace with the no-show at the Sugar Bowl. Hopefully this constant negative/the sky is falling crap-o-la will fuel some additional desire and fire in the belly of coaches and players.
I’m looking for any silver lining from the sugar bowl. Just now able to talk about it.

Just promote Lanning and name Rambo the new secondary coach. Rambo can learn under Smart as Smart is pretty hands on with coaching, especially the secondary.

OK why not? Sure Rambo doesn’t have the experience but he can recruit and that is all that seems to matter anymore.

Just think with the youth of the other coaches on defense a more seasoned, experienced DB coach would be better. Rambo has another year as a grad assistant and the jury is out as a recruiter since he’s only been allowed on the trail while the team is transitioning from Tucker to a new coach. He’s still really green as far as learning the coaching ropes. JMO.

Makes sense. I just like to see former Dawgs succeed, especially in the program. With Kirby so into what the defense does I could probably coach dbs and they would only give up twice as many tds.

Yep, we gotta get Elam. Otherwise, we could be without a 3rd string safety for the next 2 years!

Connor Riley is a football novice who writes at a high school level. His constant barrage of mediocre journalism has caused me to stop following Dawgnation altogether. He recently posted an article about how dominant Zamir White would be coming off of an injury, and the basis for the article was a picture that White posted of himself on Instagram. Just embarrassing.

One thing I have learned is that I can avoid giving him clicks by paying attention to the wording of titles. If it reads un-insightful or lacks creativity it’s a pretty sure bet that Riley wrote it.

If Kirby dies, that’s when I worry about the DC search. Calm down people, the program hasn’t been in a better position since players were allowed to wear #34.

But this is the kind of stuff we’re doomed to read for a while after the Texas loss. “What’s wrong with Georgia? They lost a meaningless bowl game! The second string QB who was only going to start for one year in 2021 left! The second 5 star receiver in the 2019 class didn’t commit! House of cards crashing down!?! Oh no!!!”
