“I will not be speaking about my transfer again.”

I got quite a few emails on the Justin Fields news yesterday. (I guess some of you were worried I might have missed it. 😉 )

It is what it is.  And mainly what it is now is old news.  However, if you’re one of those Dawgs who really needs to chew on an old bone, I would direct you to the best summary of the situation I’ve read, in the Toledo Blade.  There, you will find one tidbit of interest:

Georgia filed a written response Jan. 24 with the NCAA, objecting to Fields and Ohio State’s waiver request before acquiescing, paving the way for a cordial resolution.

Personally, I’m surprised McGarity had even that much backbone.  In any event, once Georgia consented, it was all over, pursuant to the NCAA rule.

Fields sought immediate eligibility citing the NCAA’s egregious behavior bylaw, the same rule Patterson used to play in 2018 at Michigan. It states a waiver will be granted “in cases where the student-athlete was a victim of objective, documented egregious behavior by a staff member or student at the previous institution and the previous institution supports the waiver.”

Look, Mars gamed the system for a kid who didn’t want to sit behind Jake Fromm for another season.  That’s all this amounts to.  Fields says he has no hard feelings, and why should he?  Neither should we, except when it comes to Sharpton’s shameless race pimping, but that’s for another post.

That’s why I think those who see this affair as a game changer are jumping the gun.  The potential game changer is Tate Martell’s appeal.  Watch that one carefully.

Wish him the best of luck. Glad to see a little more wiggle room in the transfer rules. Also happy that UGA didn’t put up much of a fight in stopping him from playing.

I agree re: the last part, but I don’t really wish him the best of luck. I kinda hope he’s a bust –or gets beat out and sits on the bench anyway–and that tOSU is bad this year and next.

Now the pressure is all on him to perform. It won’t take the Ohio natives long to get restless if he doesn’t. If he does, the narrative will turn on CKS for letting him get away.

IMO he’s gonna be lights-out in that system.

Yeah wouldn’t be surprised to seem him do really well. He obviously has the talent and I suspect aOSU will do everything they can to make him succeed. Meaning they will tailor the offense to what he can handle. Didn’t make sense to do it here because we are already successful with Fromm, who is a different type of QB.

I don’t care if he wins the Heisman…he was becoming a sideshow and a distraction. Better he leave than Fromm.
      And if he falters?
I know a few people from Harrison HS.

If Justin is wiser for all of this, he will kindly tell his old man to butt-out.

glad the kid is gone. he never would have beaten Fromm out even with one more year in UGA’s system. he found out that D1 college players can tackle and hit. I was never impressed by his accuracy. kid should have been a running back. hope we see him in the playoffs and show him what it’s all about.

Yes, accuracy isn’t a problem for him. I happened to the Auburn game again last night, and he played a good bit in the 4th quarter. He’s a little like Tua: very good, or ‘holy shit, why didn’t he get rid of the ball?’ Both of them will get better as they realize they aren’t playing against normal HS caliber players. It’s a head thing. And I hate that he is gone for us, but it is the right move for him. He could see that he was never beating out JF11, and also probably realizing that JF11 might not even leave early. It’s just bidness. I just hope he loses to us in the playoffs next season.

Don’t know the details regarding the transfer portal or how it works. If UGA had opposed the transfer, there would have been more of a process, hearings, that sort of thing? But because we didn’t oppose it, it was granted?

Sounds to me like it was:

We’ll get out of your way, but you’re gonna say something nice vs. you stand in our way and we’ll say something you won’t like.

In the end both sides get what they wanted.

I didn’t realize that we had any say. Had I, i would have predicted this.

Wonder what Tate can threaten OSU with?

    • The appeal process has nothing to do with the transfer portal. Mars worked the same game for Shea Patterson a season ago.

      • Didn’t Patterson allege that Ole Miss misled him about the extent of the violations and the likely punishment for the program? It was the institutional response. In this case, the university took swift action even at the detriment of another team on campus.

But how doesn’t this first half of this rule the senator posted above not apply?

“in cases where the student-athlete was a victim of objective, documented egregious behavior by a staff member or student at the previous institution and the previous institution supports the waiver.”

          Was Justin the victim?
          Was it egregious?
          Was it documented?
          Was Sasser a student?

I’m seeing a lot of checked boxes.

          • If he felt to be a victim at the time it was reported, why didn’t he leave the team immediately? I don’t fault him for taking advantage of his situation presented by someone who is supposed to be a friend, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. It certainly doesn’t mean I should wish him the best at anOSU no matter what some lawyer-composed release says.

So he has to react the way you want him to?

Had he said that incident sufficed to leave the team and Fromm had gotten hurt, you would have said, “well it’s too bad his feelings were that hurt…”. Really? Really???

I’m not seeing anything in that rule that the victim has to admit being victimized. Only that he’s the victim. If I’m in the same position I’m taking 2 positions: 1) fuck that guy. I’m not giving him the satisfaction of thinking I’m bothered in the least and 2) I can go start at a top 5 team next year because of an asshole? Why not?

Just because Jackie Robinson played hall of fame baseball during that time doesn’t mean he wasn’t a victim. I guess he’d have to have quit the dodgers to satisfy you that he suffered at all, right?

              You’re not serious are you?

              • I didn’t say he didn’t have the right to do exactly what he did. He couldn’t beat out Fromm, so he was likely leaving no matter what especially if Jake has made it clear he’s staying for his remaining 2 years.

Comparing Justin Fields to Jackie Robinson is a joke, right? From all indications, he was welcomed by the entire university community. Everyone cheered for him when he entered the game. 80,000+ showed up to see him at G-Day last year. He was a big man on campus from day 1. Compare that to being called all sorts of names in every stadium he played in until Pee Wee Reese made it clear that 42 was a teammate and deserved to be supported.

I’m not comparing their circumstances. In fact, you are.

You’ve suggested that Justin should have quit for much less yo show effect and I assume at the time you made that suggesting you knew all to well that Jackie played on in the face of much much worse.

Your position on quitting over the incident just doesn’t make a damn bit of sense.

We know if Justin had been the starter or if Jake were moving on, this incident wouldn’t have led to the transfer. No need to convince me this wasn’t opportunistic.

Motive, opportunity, and rules came together for this to happen. No reason for me to be angry at the kid. I’m angry at Sasser and his idiot friends, not Justin.

If we have to play the guy, I think I’ll be that much madder.

I agree about that–what he did was not right or legitimate or who it’s supposed to work. But, as Derek says, considering that he wanted to play somewhere–somewhere good– and not wait, he did what frankly should have been his right from the start, i.e., to transfer somewhere else and play right away… he manipulated a system that has had to screw itself around its own BS to avoid doing the fair thing in the first place.

It’s all settled and if the rumblings about his attitude while at UGA are true I’m glad he’s gone. But I don’t wish him well and college football just got a little closer to something a lot of us don’t like. Welcome to free agency folks.

He is the victim. Whether he was victimized is another thing entirely.

He had to read in the paper that those things were being said about him from the stands by fellow student athletes that he shared an athletic department with. How anyone could suggest that wouldn’t at least have a tinge of hurt is just being purposefully ignorant, or it just comes natural to them.

You can call it whatever you want. Fields being dumb or immature enough to think he was just going to show up and be handed the starting quarterback position makes him a victim only if you mean he is a victim of his own inflated ego. Anybody who thinks Kirby or anyone else promised him that he would start immediately or that this is about anything other than him taking his ball and going home because he didnt get to start is either being purposefully ignorant or it just comes naturally. Some guy saying something in the stands just made it easier and suckered people into thinking he is a victim rather than a spoiled brat.

I don’t care about Fields one way or the other, but that’s an insult to Jackie Robinson. JR was a true hero, who faced threats, prejudice and segregation. JF is just a swell headed kid who couldn’t beat out a starter and left to go play someplace else. They have nothing in common beyond being protein based life forms and melanin.

Given how it’s played out, fields made the right move. I don’t blame him. If he were sitting or a back up in Columbus or elsewhere, then he’d look like a fool, but he’s the sure starter for a top-5 team. If you’re him do you sit behind Fromm in 2019 instead?

The only problem with your last question is, Fromm was already on the team and was quarterbacking said team to within a play of a NC victory during Fields’ recruitment. For some reason Fields was dumb enough or immature enough to think he was just going to waltz in and get handed the starting spot. That’s on him because I would bet any amount of money that nobody told him that was going to happen.

        • Derek

Maybe he didn’t think it was a waltz, but clearly he thought he had a shot at it. Whether a product of ego, immaturity or plain stupidity I don’t know. I have a sneaking suspicion that he found the playbook…ill-suited to his talents.

The adjustment from what he did in HS to what he was being asked to do at UGA was a gulf. If you’re Uber gifted you may think there’s a better way. I think he’ll be better suited to play in OSUs system.

It’s almost like putting Deion Sanders at safety and asking him to make all sorts of complicated checks and communications. It would be pretty easy for him to say: wouldn’t this be easier if you just put me on their best receiver and have me cover him and make sure he doesn’t catch any passes? It’s an oversimplification but I think that’s part of why he’s in Columbus and it may be part of why Cheney is in Knoxville.

Fields and Sasser were friendly, acquaintances if you will. That’s why Sasser made his plea to put him in the game. The incident became the convenient excuse for Fields to get immediate eligibility, nothing deeper. Sasser is now the starting 1B at North Greenville College by the way.

If the rules were different, I would say Godspeed. Under the current rules, he has taken advantage of a loophole if everything is true about the relationship between Sasser and him. His father may be behind all of this, but Fields is an adult and could have handled this the right way.

I don’t think you can say that and still say welcome to UGA Maurice Smith. That move was also against the rules at the time. People seem to want to sweep that under the rug. I fully understand he was a graduate, but the SEC had a rule about transfers, and he didn’t qualify.

      Like

      • Does he qualify under the letter of the rules? Yep. I still think the substance of the waiver is garbage. Smith asked Alabama to waive the restriction. It took bad press for Little Nicky to release him as a graduate. Totally different but YMMV.

        • 1smartdude

Not different at all. In fact the very same. The only difference is that Smith was a graduate. In both cases there was a rule in place to prevent the transfer, in both cases the school had to agree with the transfer, Saban and Smart, for it to happen ( without some kind of further action by the NCAA). In both cases an appeal was made, Smith citing academics, Fields using the race incident. Both were bogus claims as both clearly transferred to play football. After their appeals were granted, both said as much.

    Good luck to him.

I am very interested to see what percentage of the undergraduate portal request for waivers are granted this year by the NCAA. Next up is Tate Martell and Bru McCoy. Based on those cases and the precedent they set we will lsee if it really becomes free agency from the NCAA side. Also interesting to see if the Power 5 conferences react the new new precedents at this year or next years spring meetings with new conference transfer limitations.

I’m watching what happens with Deangelo Gibbs at Tennessee. A door had been opened and a precedent set, at least as far UGA is concerned. If Fields’ camp used just the Sasser incident alone, like Derek said above it checks all the boxes for the rulebook. If they delved into hostile racial environment territory, then every minority athlete that wants to leave UGA can use the same argument.

The facts related to the matter were documented and submitted by Georgia. It will likely come out in 90 days.

Nothing more to gain by fighting it.

Speaking of transfers, I see we got that 6’5″ receiver Cager out of Miami as a grad transfer. That sounds like a nice addition as he was their second leading receiver. Anyone know how much eligibility he has left?

  15. There was a division on the team, especially between the WRs and QB. I’m not gonna bury my head in the sand and wish him the best. Im actually surprised that this hasn’t hurt the program and caused more issues than it did/has.

I don’t think it’s burying your head in the sand to move on. The die is cast and we are working toward the future. I understand what you are saying though. I don’t have to root for him or wish him well. I also don’t have to curse his existence and wish him ill. I simply do not care because the house that Kirby is building does not live or die by one player. There is no upside to being negative about this situation.

I’m sure some players wanted to see Fields get more meaningful reps. That doesn’t mean they didn’t like Fromm as well. The fact there wasn’t a huge rift inside the program is probably due to the culture of the team and the respect Fromm has earned. That should say a lot about where we are as a program.

I love Kirby Smart. I wanted Tom Herman at the time, and I do think Herman is really good. However, I am more than happy with Kirby. This is the stuff I have dreamed about since the late 80s.

There are ample opportunities for this question every season, seems like more with more lawyers stirring pots at every turn. I didn’t know the NCAA allowed the involved school the right to take the decision out of their hands. This really weakens the one year rule for sitting, thus making it a much bigger issue/threat down the road. I honestly don’t know how any appeals get turned down anymore, certainly the Martell case will shed more light (unless ohio also puts up the white flag.)

There are a lot of IFs in my outlook but here goes. If Martel is not granted a waiver after Fields was then expect the lawyers to line up to take that case (Mars will probably first in line). Fields cost OSU Martel and Dwan Mathis. If Fields does not light it up at OSU and Martel does at UM and or Mathis at UGA, the whole city of Columbus might spontaneously combust. Fields comment yesterday was very disingenuous. While he says all the right things, he was fully prepared to let Mars peruse a scorched earth policy against UGA to get what he wanted. This situation makes you appreciate even more what a class act Jacob Eason is. He (as far as we were told) was NEVER a distraction in the locker room when he had much more of a right to be than Fields. He was the Wally Pipp of UGA football and while I’m sure he tore him up inside to be on the bench, he never let it show. Contrast that with Fields who was NEVER the starter and after the USC game acted as if he was wronged (and was very willing to show it). I don’t wish him harm, but would love to see him be a bust at OSU to bring his and his dad’s ego back to earth.

How is saying “I didn’t do shit” voicing victimization exactly?

I took it that he’d like to have contributed more. I’d hope any kid that doesn’t play much would be disappointed at not contributing more. Otherwise you’re not much of a competitor.

If you don’t think we essentially wrote that “very disingenuous” statement in exchange for standing aside I’ve got a bridge and some beachfront land in beautiful Hahira to sell you.

So by your standards since Eason did not show his displeasure so publicly then apparently he must not be much of a competitor. By the way, Hahira is lovely this time of year. You can almost see Valdosta from there.

Was Eason wired each and every time he walked off the field?

I guess I’ll leave the mind reading up to you, but I’m guessing you can be disappointed in not playing much (at all) and not be a cancer in the locker room all at the same time.

All I’m really saying is that the single quote doesn’t exactly convince me of anything about anything. Too little evidence.

I have not seen it, but others have commented on video showing his poor attitude during the Austin Peay game as well. I guess since he was anointed by many as the second coming of god himself, he figured the starting QB spot was his divine rite. Apparently Jake Fromm figure otherwise.

It was widely rumored in recruiting circles outside of the “we didn’t him anyway” usual suspects. He’s apparently in a Bledsoe bind – if he graduates on time, people are going to be taking a hard look at how he made up so much ground so quickly.

Flipping him made headlines. If he ends up not qualifying, it won’t. Kirby can’t lose by landing him. But I would hope there’s a real avenue to fall enrollment if Kirby offered.

I’m not sure how the transfers count against the programs. I saw some saying you could count some in a different class so this is a question. As of the transfer of the TE from TN and the medical DQ of Long, it was reported that put us right at the scholarship limit. That was before the announcement by Cager. Does this mean that another player will soon be leaving? Does that mean they don’t expect Pickens to qualify? Does that mean the information given yesterday was wrong? Enquiring minds want to know!

Don’t want to read too much into it, but the article included a SM response from Mecole Hardman that’s a little questionable. Why would he say he will support Justin instead of Jake for the Heisman? I hope I’m wrong but it does sound like at least some of the guys may have wanted Fields instead?

I wonder what kind of warm welcome Pablo Fields will get if he can quit changing Justin’s diaper long enough to come to one of his daughter’s softball games in Athens. Surely he won’t subject himself to a place with such palpable racial hostility that he couldn’t let his son continue to attend. But he has no such problem letting his daughter linger here.

On another note, I skimmed a few rival message boards and surprisingly, most all supported UGA’s position and called bullshit on Fields and the NCAA.

I kind of feel sorry for Fields at this point. People are reacting to claims he or his lawyer never made and a transfer that Georgia blessed. I mean, if Georgia’s ok with it, why can’t the fans?

Same lawyer (Mars) that people were Internet back-slapping when he got Hugh Freeze canned. Now he’s evil personified?

Now I wonder if some people are going to go out of their way to make the sister’s life difficult. Which would be an epic disaster for Georgia in terms of recruiting in all sports.

Have you seen the appeal filed by the lawyer?

Don’t you think UGA let him go to get the whole thing over with? I suspect there wasn’t any blessing about it other than to say “It ain’t worth fighting about”?

I have little doubt Mars was planting everything he could in the media, so he didn’t have to put it in the appeal.

There has been universal outrage that Mars and Fields are claiming Georgia is a racist hotbed unfit for his presence, and his sister coming here proves he’s full of shit.

Which they have NEVER said. It’s standard Internet exaggeration. An absurd caricature thrown around on social media enough it has become “fact.”

Honestly, the reaction of the fan base has been pretty disappointing. As bad as anything we like to mock other fan bases for.

So, you want Fields to forfeit a full year of playing time that the NCAA is offering him with its policy by admitting he doesn’t really care about loudly being called a n****** at a game by a fellow student athlete? So you can feel better?

            Seriously?

Fields’ claim is not that Georgia is an unfit environment for him because of racism – because that can’t be his claim. The NCAA policy is that it has to be specific to him. Something happened specifically to him, and it meets the NCAA’s requirement to play immediately. He would be a fool to pass it up.

Why does it bother you so much? No one is questioning Georgia here. Not even Fields. He had very nice things to say about Georgia in his final press release and never said or intimated anything bad about Georgia. Neither did Mars. Show me anywhere they said the University of Georgia was racist. One link. Anywhere.

Spoiler: The Internet put those words in their mouths. It’s a fiction.

            • You misunderstand me … I have no doubt that he was the victim of a racial slur thrown by a fool who WAS a student-athlete. I’m also aware that if Fields had beaten out Fromm, none of that would have mattered a damn but. Now that it’s done just admit that the incident gave him the ability to transfer for playing time, which is really the reason he’s in Columbus.

He took full advantage of the opportunity given to him by the action of another person. Good for him.

The Pandoras box here is that kids can male similar claims (true or not) and play them out in the public against a university, as if it’s an environment/culture/AD problem, just to get a transfer. So get used to it, we will likely see all kinds of stuff come out of the woodwork moving forward, at an even more accelerated rate!. I have hard feelings against Fields the same as I have hard feelings against Grantham and Bobo. All for different reasons of course. I was happy to see Grantham and Bobo go, but I feel like Fields left us somewhat high and dry (elevated and dehydrated if you will) regarding qb depth.

None of this is personal of course, but just as it has warmed my heart watching CSU tank and Grantham’s defenses get torched I will likewise find comfort if Justin Fields falls flat in Columbus. The bad thing is, I think he’s going to be a star and Georgia fans will be left wondering what might have been.
