You get a title! And you get a title!

They’re handing ’em out like chocolates at Halloween.

More than 10 weeks after there officially was an opening for a defensive coordinator on Georgia’s football staff, there is finally clarity on who is filling the position.

Outside linebackers coach Dan Lanning was promoted to defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann is co-defensive coordinator…

In addition, running backs coach Dell McGee now has the title ‘run game coordinator’ and will be paid $650,000 after a $100,000 raise. Wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton will be pass game coordinator and be paid $550,000 after a $175,000 raise. Offensive line coach Sam Pittman has added the title associate head coach and will be paid $900,000, a boost in pay of $75,000.

You know, a guy could feel left out if he didn’t get a title… except everybody got a raise, except for the new coach, of course, but he’s making more than one of the co-defensive coordinators, so that works out.

Speaking of working out, you know this has to warm the cockles of Greg McGarity’s benighted heart.

Georgia’s assistant coach salary pool will be less than last seasonfrom $6.42 million to $6.045 million after Mel Tucker, who made $1.5 million annually, departed.

  1. What do run game and passing game coordinators actually do other than rationalize higher pay with the title?

Good for all of them … I’m glad to see the administration take care of the staff instead of what we had before.

It doesn’t matter how great you recruit talent, or develop it, when they are clueless against what the defense throws at them, the offense is shut down. You can come up with 100+ reasons and excuses, but that was an epic fail and cost us both games all by its lonesome.

Does the $6.42 mil include the money UTk is paying to take Chaney?

UGA should be in the market for some analysts.

Kirby gave everyone a new title and a raise, AND saved money from last year? THAT’S the new Georgia Way!

I’m going to start calling Kirby “The Wolf” because he’s on the mother!

Tucker was a darn good DC. Lanning & Schumann have some big shoes to fill.

    • He seemed to be very good, but Kirby seemed to step on the toes inside those shoes quite a bit on game days.

concur…thinks that is just Kirby micromanager he is. Gonna bite him in the ass one day, may already have.

          It hasn’t bit Saban

          • Don’t know yet. He has a lot of turnover, probably for good reasons, and none of his disciples are wildly succeeding at this next level. Kirby may be the first if this pace continues.

Know what he is saying, management by fear/intimidation or management by participation.

I would put Saban in that first category, but it is working for him (wins/losses), except for the turnover. Kirby, not quite sure just where he falls… seems like he has an awful lot of Saban in him. But he is still young, he may change. Hard to argue which style works best, but both seem to micromanage.

Me, I prefer the management by participation more. Seems to cut down on turnover. Better long term IYAM, BWDIK.

I’m feeling a bit left out here. I want to be the Co-assistant post game special teams coordinator. I’m welling to fill this vitally important position for just $500 K per year (plus expenses of course).

As an academic myself, the whole thing makes me feel very, very left out. One day I can aspire to make what the waterboys get, I guess…should have picked a field closer to the core mission.

Mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be lawyers…. Let them be position coaches, coordinators and such. Good gosh, these people get rounded up in amounts that would make most people giddy.

I’m not yet ready to get a framed picture of Dan Lemming for my living room. Mel Tucker will be missed.

Technically, they aren’t both co-DC’s, only Schumann is. By title, Lanning is THE defensive coordinator. Dasher pointed that out on twitter yesterday. I think the “co-“ for Schumann is more of a way to justify his raise. But Dasher said in reality, Lanning is the man.

Why didn’t they go ahead and make Pittman a million dollar man. He’s literally worth his weight in gold.

So Pittman weighs what? Let’s say 290 lbs. The current spot price of gold is about $1,325 / oz. So Pittman would be worth about $5,600,000. Sounds about right. Pay the man!

Hang on a second. Didn’t we bump ticket prices last year to support more pay for our coaches?? This savings should come out to $10 per season ticket. Looking forward to that relief on this year’s ticket.
