Anthony Dasher voices a strange complaint about the Lanning promotion.
Yes, Bulldog fans should be thrilled that Smart is their head coach. Having said that, the public confirmation of Dan Lanning’spromotion to defensive coordinator deserves comment. It’s one of the oddest deals I’ve seen in 32 years of covering collegiate athletics.
For those unaware, the word from on high didn’t come in the form of a press release or a formal announcement by the University. No, it’s the result of an open records request, one made by UGASports and other media outlets that regularly cover Georgia’s athletic program.
I’m still scratching my head, trying to figure out why Smart allowed it to be handled this way.
When Georgia announced the promotion of James Coley, the hirings of tight end coach Todd Hartley and defensive back coach Charlton Warren, and even offensive analyst Shawn Watson, the school released the news in a professionally written email to beat writers, complete with a quote from Smart extolling the virtues of the program’s latest hire.
That wasn’t the case with Lanning.
It wasn’t until Georgia’s open records office replied to requests late Friday afternoon, listing Georgia’s assistants and their titles and salaries, that anyone outside the program could say what Lanning’s title was.
Was this a wise decision by Smart?
There’s no doubt a good portion of the Bulldog Nation who don’t give a flying flip how it affects the media and their ability to do their job. “It’s Smart’s team and he can do what he wants; you (media) don’t have a right to know.” I get it.
That’s actually not my gripe. It’s the false narrative that was unnecessarily created that Georgia had to settle for Lanning when that was not the case.
But while everyone tries to figures out Smart’s motives were—he’s been unavailable for comment since the Sugar Bowl—those reasons, whatever they are, seem curious at best.
The fact the media had to find out on its own via an FOI request has been a running joke for opposing fans.
Now, Coach Smart doesn’t care what anyone thinks, but it’s a shame that this incorrect narrative on Lanning’s hire has been allowed to percolate among Bulldog rivals: they could claim use Smart really didn’t “get his man,” and use it as recruiting propaganda.
Okay, Kirby doesn’t care, most of us don’t care and I’ll bet the coaching staff doesn’t either. But what opposing fans say is supposed to matter? Shit, if that’s all it took, we would have put Georgia Tech football out of business years ago.
I will be curious to hear if Dasher brings this up at Smart’s next presser, even if I’m pretty sure of the response if he does.
This is nothing but a reporter with his ass on his shoulders, IMHO…YMMV.

I like the way the DC hiring was handled. Keep it close to the vest. It wasn’t like the cluster frick like Grantham or Pruitt’s hiring.

OK Kirby doesn’t follow the cookie cutter pattern. So what?

As long as the defense plays and recruits well, I don’t care if they call the coordinator “Coach X” and never release his name.

^This, times two.
Plus, if the worst thing you can say about a hire is that you don’t like the way it was handled means there really isn’t much to complain about.

I guess he doesn’t like that a false narrative was created – but he uses words odd , head scratching and curious about the way the info came out – and I can endorse all of those.
Putting your feelings about the journalist here aside , why do we think Kirby chose to let the info come out this way ?

And didn’t the Defense play… at least OK vs Texas. I have eradicated it mostly from memory, but I certainly remember a few short fields (understatement). Gave up 28 pts with 2 short fields with an offense that played like they had bourbon street hand grenades in their water bottles.

It’s almost as if Kirby doesn’t want to hand over the narrative surrounding his program to media that make their living through clickbait, and over which he has zero control. Strange. They’ve been so helpful to the program’s image, especially in the recent Justin Fields proceedings.
I’m sure Dashers reasoned response, i.e attempting to shame Kirby into making sure ATL media back has the first and best opportunity to drive UGA’s public perception, will convince Kirby he’s way off here.

Kirby ought to say Uga ate the press release if some reporter asks (complains) about this.

I agree with Dasher. No reason why Kirby can’t let UGA fans, alums, contributors have info like this, without us having to dig.

Yes there is a reason.
We just don’t know what it is..
It’s the old “need to know” vs “nice to know” rule
Just keep winning, Kirbs!

This whole media feud vs Kirby is strange. I’m not sure who started it or who is culpable, but it’s just a strange beast altogether.

I’ve always seen it as being more started by guys like Chip Towers who acted like they were personally offended when Richt was fired, and then wrote multiple articles complaining about how Kirby handles releasing information, and the way he’s not warm and fuzzy at press conferences. I understand they’re just trying to do their jobs, but I get better information on sites like this, be it the posts or the comments, or friends “in the know”, than I do from professional sites.

it got started when Kirby started doing things that other schools had done that we hadn’t done. Like limited media time at practice. An indoor facility that can shut out everyone. Kirby telling reporters they didn’t know they were talking about.. like” leaving a man on an island.”. Things so many of us have no problems with ,and appreciate piss them off because they thought they should have free rein to do what they wanted.
And agencies like AJC have always made their money on being controversial, clickbait, divisive, et all.
What’s interesting is at Alabama they accepted, they like it, they appreciate it, thinks saben is the god. Kirby did similar things . but not everything he’s done, and is considered the devil.
personally I feel like Kirby has done a good thing… protecting his players and keeping them from embarrassment or drama by making sure their families are notified of things first. Staff is on the same page when talking to the media. Our program seems to be more cohesive.
notice all the exiting from an alley and forgetting your name charges have gone away.

Agreed. We fans may have a never ending appetite for loving our team but I could care less if the Georgia Bulldogs spawn an ever increasing number of sports journalism careers.
Is it really normal that there should be 5 or 6 different companies and maybe 40 people whose livelihood is reporting on an amateur football team at 1 school ? Talk about all your eggs in 1 basket.

Is the lack of dumb arrests more a product of Kirby, or Jimmy Williamson retiring though? He always seemed pissed that Richt was too morally clean to pay him and his guys off. I think his retirement went a long way.
Although I do recall early in his time here Kirby hosted the campus/Athens PD to practice I think. A little bit goes a long way I guess.

Both perhaps. Kirby did improve relationships with the police department as a first step though. I also think McGarity is a giant pussy that let it go where Kirby said he’s not putting up with that shit

Dippy Dasher (not a good reporter) and the #FakeNews phonies don’t understand that Coach SMART only hires the best and brightest for his staff. There’s no story for them. Maybe they should concentrate on all the SMART things he’s done to MAKE GEORGIA GREAT AGAIN!

It was obvious that it had to be an somebody on staff since the size of the staff is set. I think 90% or more of the fans guessed it would be some combination of Lanning and Schuman so the whole thing is kind of anti-climatic. But I’m with Dasher in that I don’t see why Kirby would make it a state secret.

I don’t care about it because I think the media has a right to know everything “on demand”, but I do feel it was handled poorly on UGA’s part. It isn’t like we are protecting the playbook, or a player’s status due to injury before a crucial game, it is an organization chart for a public university. Looks silly to me, if KS wants to take shots at the media via secrecy, make it something strategic that has value by being hidden. Two internal promotions is about as bland as it gets.
Don’t allow the media and social media to paint the picture, make a statement as you want then move forward.
I had heard the first week of both openings that they would be filled internally, and not to expect someone from outside. When the decision was final, UGA should have made it public and avoided the rumors and speculation, especially the DC opening. Another PR screw up, imo.
