Professor Air Raid

That Mike Leach leadership seminar is gonna be lit.

As part of the application process, students will be asked to address the following two essay questions, which will be reviewed by Leach and Baumgartner. There is a 200‑word limit for each of the essay question responses.

  1. Can the British strategy in the Malaya insurgency be used today?
  2. Is the wishbone a potentially viable offense for the NFL? Why or Why not?

I am assuming that’s the first time those two questions have ever been pitched in the same course.

Oh, and best of all…

The seminar’s final session will take place April 23 and will be livestreamed online for public viewing. The livestreamed lecture will summarize the four previous lectures and will culminate in a live question-and-answer session.  [Emphasis added.]

You’d best watch.  There will be a test at the blog afterwards.

  1. Senator — if at all possible, on the day of April 23, could you post the reminder and streamling link if you happen to come across it?

I have bookmarked a note on my calendar for that day. That is entertainment I do not want to miss….

No to the wishbone. Limited NFL roster sizes would make it too difficult to have enough RBs and a likely set of durable QBs to withstand the wear and tear of such a long season. Plus, NFL LBs are so fast and strong that they can keep disciplined assignments and stuff the option. Now, as a red zone twist, it could be viable to put in the playbook with the right personnel available.

    1) is there anything particularly unique to British colonialism in Malaya? Just wondering why he’s being so specific. Perhaps there’s something remarkable, but my assumption is that it’s at most derivative of approaches in other colonies including in the 13 states.

    2) the dearth of fbs would make the wishbone impractical from a personnel standpoint. I do think it would be interesting to see a team not invest 10’s of millions in a qb but rather have 3 to 4 at a discount and put their money on defense. Ultimately though the fans wouldn’t be down with a run heavy, field position strategy. Given the advantages the passing game is given I’m going with no way on the wishbone in the nfl. Too many headwinds.

I had a speech by John McKay while he was at USC explaining around 1971 why the I-formation was superior to it. He said that: 1) if you have an OJ Simpson or the like why waste carries on the other 3 potential ball carriers? . 2) if your fullback can block my edge defender I’ve made a horrible mistake in recruiting. It was pretty funny and McKay had quite a bit of success against wishbone teams. McKay was at least as funny as leach and actually won stuff.

      1) He’s likely aiming for discussion of the Briggs Plan, which was multifaceted and included forced relocation of civilians into guarded camps.

Coach McKay was a funny man…while at USC he was recruiting his own son,John Jr., as a receiver…Coach was asked if the NCAA had a problem with that…he said ‘well,I do know his mother pretty well.’ 😉

I think if the Brits had used the wishbone against the insurgents, it definitely would’ve caught them off guard and turned the tide of history. So am I in the class or not?

My favorite McKay comment, when he was with Tampa Bay:

What do you think about the execution of your offense?

McKay: I’m in favor of it.

I have bigger Fish to Fry than to worry about whether an archaic offense will find success against athletically elite opponents.
