‘Daddy, I just want to play.’

Um, about that whole competition at Georgia thing:

After the season, Bennett was told he’d be able to compete for Georgia’s backup quarterback job in 2018. That’s not what happened, though. Georgia signed Justin Fields out of Harrison and Bennett felt the coveted 5-star signee was thrust ahead of him on the depth chart without backing it up with his play on the practice field.

All that came to a head in the 2018 G-Day Game. Fields indeed filled the role as No. 2 quarterback and looked good doing it as he passed for 207 yards and a touchdown against the No. 2 defense and other backups. Bennett went third and completed 5-of-9 for 73 yards against the No. 1 defense.

Bennett got the message and decided he’d be better off trying to make his way elsewhere.

“He thought he’d have a legitimate shot for the back-up role, but when Justin came there he didn’t really get that chance,” Pender said. “Justin was put right in front of him, and Stet decided ‘maybe Georgia’s not the place for me.’”

Look, I’m not blaming the staff for making that particular choice.  (And, to be fair, Bennett’s perspective on whether Fields backed it up on the practice field may be different from his coaches’.)  But the risk you run when you make a huge deal out of competition being the crucible that forges the depth chart is fallout like that.

Still, he’s back when they need him.  It’s fortunate for Smart that Bennett’s a damned good Dawg.

I am glad we have him. Fields is a special talent, no doubt about that, but this may have worked out all for the best: Stetson got to play and hone his game a lot more at JCC than he would have been able to do in Athens. It is going to end up being good for Fields also. He played well here, but his best game was against UMass which is to say not a very good D. I am not sure if we ever punted in that game. He will flourish against most of the defenses he faces at tOSU. Kirk will be touting him for the Heisman by October this year.

Just ask Sam Vaughn what they promised him and how he was treated there..

Both football and the baseball team he made also..

Tell it brother. I knew about football but I thought everything was good with baseball for Sam.

        • Spike

Thanks Mayor.. it’s a long story. But, the baseball coach sought Sam out to pitch. So Sam sacrificed a lot by doing spring football and playing baseball for UGA, but they treated him like shit. All of em.. Thru his own talent, grit and determination he made two SEC level teams..football and baseball.

Things like this make me wonder about Kirby though.

Chip Towers seems to have a little passive-aggressive war going on with Kirby. This is just the latest shot.

Yes..thinks Chip got his feelings hurt early on he has not forgot it. Just can’t let go and it is obvious. Pouters gonna pout…..

Glad to have Bennett back and hope he better understands his role on the team. He didn’t exactly set the world on fire during his gig at Jones County JC, with 56% completions, 16 TDs and 14 INTs. Perhaps a little humble pie brought him back to earth and helped him appreciate what he has at UGA.

I’m a worried man if he has to play meaningful snaps in an SEC game. I’m just looking at the reality of the whole situation. Fromm needs to stay healthy.

Walk-ons being treated differently than scholarship players. How new and unusual in the world of college football.

Shouldn’t the memo be out to ALL by now that Little Johnny isn’t guaranteed shit at a big Power 5 school ? Do these people read news about the machinations of college football or just bury their head in the sand ?

TLDR, but unless somebody was making a strong case that Bennett was better than Fields this is a dumb premise for an article. We’re probably screwed if Bennett ever starts in Athens so I’m not really seeing the advantage of having an average JuCo scout team All American as the backup. Unpredictable, Cinderella heroics notwithstanding.
