Musical palate cleanser, baroque ‘n’ roll edition

From 1968, here’s the Left Banke, with “Desiree”.

Now, flash forward 43 years and add a full-blown chorus.

Love that female trombone player…

We disagree on several fronts but you got it right on the trombone player – well done.

  2. As soon as I saw “baroque” ‘n’ roll, I thought of The Left Bank. However, it was “Just Walk Away Renee” I was thinking of.

Love, love, love these guys. “Pretty Ballerina” and “She May Call You Up” are two of the all-time overlooked gems. Their whole recorded output fits on a single disc. Sadly, I think the main guy (Brown?) died a year or so ago.

    • Here’s another one I love:

Brown did pass away in ’18.

Oh, yeah, just a classic sunshine sound. On the other side of the spectrum a longtime favorite is the dark, proggy “Shadows Breaking Over My Head” (if I got the title right). As often happened in the 60s/70s wraparound, they somehow bizarrely evolved into the Stories, and “Brother Louie”, I believe, ends both comps of them I have.

I think the Ides of March (“Vehicle”: worst badass guitar solo of the era) evolved into the “Eye of the Tiger” guys, and the Outsiders into Climax (“Precious and Few”). I love that kind of trivia.

Michael Brown- took me a sec to recall his first name. RIP to a great underappreciated talent…

Wow, that sounded great! Have you heard these guys, the Fendertones, take on classic Brian Wilson?

    • I haven’t, but those are pretty good.

I assume you’re familiar with The Wondermints.

Oh, yeah, love those guys, with Brian and on their own. Darian’s a pal through my old roommate, a producer who used to hire them a lot at Disney. He’s a major authority on Girl Groups and has played with everybody, including the Zombies.

I can’t hear the clips on my work machine,(I think our tecchies do it on purpose, ’cause they are tech fans and naturally passive aggressive. Of course they are probably reading this as I type, so there goes video too.) but if you are looking for a 60’s vibe in a modern artist, check out Eli Reed.
