What is the purpose of life?

If you’re a sportswriter for the AJ-C, surely it’s getting to pontificate on what a Georgia football coach ought to do when his players get arrested.

    If you’ve never coached or can’t teach a class about coaching then become a writer and tell coaches how they should run a program

    Maybe they need to steal a pig. Or go bowling. Or do something outside of football as a group. But who knows? As long as the kids do stupid things (breaking team rules plus getting arrested), the papers will continue to write about it. And pontificate on how to deal with it. I have no problems with the paper here. The players need to start policing themselves.

    I don’t know what Kirby is doing about it in practice, but the message obviously hasn’t gotten through to everyone. I’d say we have enough talent on the team that demoting players should get their attention.

    This is surprisingly still an unpopular opinion – but I don’t give a baker’s fuck about the arrests, personally. I’m more offended by the notion that we live in a country where police are called to a private domicile to search for a harmless substance and arrest two young men for victimless crimes. Same goes for the guys who got arrested because of a downtown kerfuffle in which an “off-duty cop” felt the need to call his on-duty buddies, and then the on-duty cops felt the need to make an arrest when nobody wanted to press charges. The sportswriters want to write about the theme of the arrests from the standpoint of the football program – I’d rather them write about the theme of arrests from the standpoint of “what is it that police are supposed to do, again?”

    Now I’ll sit back and wait for the incoming “don’t break the law” responses.

      More headlines in the arrest of UGA student athletes, than to go on and on about the academic all-americans or the hours spent giving of their time to others to better the community and just maybe expose those student athletes who excel in life…police=Protect and Serve…and to help those who have made a bad decision make better ones going forward…and if you should be a baker, butcher,hair stylist or good enough to be a student athlete at UGA…”don’t break the fuckin’ law”!

      But the search was legal! They used the ol’ “I smell marijuana” (even though it apparently wasn’t burning) iron-clad cause for a warrant. I continue to be amazed by the incredible sense of smell possessed by most local cops.

        The Beal and Cox arrests make me really hot. The Holyfield arrest a few years ago is even more egregious when he was literally sitting in his room minding his own business, which is way better than what most kids are doing at 1am in Athens. I don’t know if it’s MJ arrests in general that make me so mad or if it’s that I feel like black athletes are targeted for it. What the good does this do for any of us? Does anyone feel safer? Get with the f***ing times, America.

      Yes. I don’t know if you were ever the older brother in charge of younger siblings. But older brothers were definitely held responsible in my family 🙂

      I think the idea is that the older players can scare, or maybe even slug, the younger players in ways that would get the coaches in trouble.

    Sounds like this group needs some off campus team building exercises designed to create unity and build leadership. Perhaps it’s time to get a former Navy Seal to put the boys through some Seal drills on the shores of Lake Lanier.

    This is the reason every head coach needs a Coach Sam Mrvos. At the start of every season and anytime someone needed help one of the assistant coaches would make the announcement that Coach Mrvos would like to see X,Y and Z after practice and we would never see them again. We don’t know what happened to them, but we all understood that we damn sure did not want it to happen to us. That is called leadership. At least in 1967 that is what it was called. I am sure Coach Dooley did not know that any of this was going on. Yes, I am sure he did not know..

    Coach Sam gut punched the WRONG player. It might have been Kirby Moore. (I said might). Kirby was a much needed Sr. QB. Other than that, Coach Mrvos could nut punch anyone he felt needed correcting.
    Trust me, it was a great learning experience just seeing that happen..

      Made the mistake of taking Coach Mrvos’ weight lifting class one quarter. Just about killed me when I had to miss a class and was required to take the advanced class the next session.
