Musical palate cleanser, seems like yesterday edition

R.E.M.’s Reckoning turned 35 this week.  Hard to believe, innit?

Anyway, here’s my favorite song from a great, great album.

One of my all-time favorite albums with South Central Rain being my favorite track. It was released while I was at UGA and I remember when REM would play a free concert on campus for at Legion Field. That ended after my junior year when so many non-students showed up that the campus police had to shut it down early.

  2. Today in I’m getting old … while I didn’t become an REM fan until the late 80s when I was in Athens, they quickly became a part of the soundtrack of my young adulthood.

Senator, are you going to Augusta to give us a report on the fan experience done right? One of my favorite weekends of the year …

Great link. Hard for me to pick a favorite track on that album. I saw REM when I was an undergrad before they had broken nationally. I wasn’t impressed. Spent two years after graduation in the real world (okay, Tifton) and learned to enjoy their music. Went back to grad school right as they were getting huge and have enjoyed them ever since.

I was late to the party too and had moved on from UGA before I became a fan. But two good non football posts today have charted the evening for me: I’m batching it tonight so I’m going to have a bottle of good wine and listen to “Reckoning” stem to stern. We’ll see what comes out of the kitchen…

Great memories! I was in Athens ’82-’85 and on the concert committee that booked 3 R.E.M. Legion field shows in that span. A special time, before fencing there, etc. We also did a Stevie R. Vaughan show in Ga Hall, Psychedelic Furs, Sonny Rollins, Asleep at the Wheel, B-52’s in Stegman, Pat Metheny, Los Lobos, among many others.
