Too cute by half

Really, I just don’t get what Dan Mullen thinks he’s up to with this.

Of course, just about everything Mullen has done so far has done that organically. His penchant for trolling rivals being one of the chief things fans have loved about him. He’s got a little bit of that Steve Spurrier swagger to him, not afraid to take snipes or joke at a rival’s expense.

The most recent was an announced attendance figure of 39,476 fans at UF’s spring game. After a few days of digging, a fan on the r/FloridaGators Reddit page realized that it had been 39 years since Georgia last won a national title, with the Bulldogs playing that title game 476 games ago.

So when a fan got a chance to ask Mullen if he realized it had been that long since the Bulldogs’ last title, Mullen laughed and explained some of the back story.

“No,” he said. “I will say this, there was a press conference early in the week. And they said, ‘Have you ever done, like, spring game attendance?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, you know what, I’ve had some different numbers out there for spring games before. I was at Mississippi State and it was always like kind of picking on Ole Miss.’

“But I told (the reporters) before the game, I said, ‘Well, if we do it there might be like 41,140 people at the game. Right?’ That one would make sense, y’all could figure that out pretty quickly. (Someone’s) yelling out Florida State in the back.

“So after the game, the press conference, they’re like ‘OK, so what’s the attendance?’ I just looked with a straight face at the media, said, ‘It’s there, you’ve got to figure it out.'”

Of course, the media floated a few different ideas, but none seemed to stick. Not until the Reddit sleuths uncovered the meaning.

If it was planned, Mullen was playing coy about it Monday night when he spoke to the Polk County Gator Club. Of course, not without taking perhaps another little swipe at Georgia.

“I had no idea. I don’t even know how they came up with that number, the most random thing ever,” Mullen said. “But everybody started freaking out about it, I guess, until three days later somebody put enough math together to go figure that out.

“Maybe Georgia fans were really so uptight they haven’t won in 39 years they got all uptight and tried to figure it out. But it was pretty random actually, it was pretty funny.”

I’d have to figure out what he means first before I can get uptight about it.

That line about “He’s got a little bit of that Steve Spurrier swagger to him” cracked me up, though.  Kind of reminds me of the way they used to describe Florida football pre-Spurrier — combining the arrogance of Alabama with the history of Vanderbilt.  As a head coach, the man’s got a losing record against Georgia and his last two games against Smart saw his teams beaten by double-digit margins in each.  There’s a lot of ways I could describe that, but Spurrier-esque wouldn’t be one of them.

If Gator fans are eating this up, bless their hearts.

  1. I’m running into a lot of UF fans lately who are really using the Tech playbook. A) talk about how they’ve won a championship more recently; B) talk about some game from ten years ago that they killed us in; C) talk about how we are cheating. Sound familiar?

    It’s music to my ears.

I was listening to the Gator homers on the radio down here yesterday, and it really does sound like talking themselves into believing Florida can beat Georgia. It’s all “mental edge” and “Georgia playing tight.” It reminds me a lot of how I and a lot of Georgia fans thought when Spurrier took over, before we knew the series had officially turned.

One of the funniest scenes in “Big Trouble” was Dennis Farina listening to the Gator Fan call in show. . .

Trying to emulate Spurrier, can’t be his own man.

Dan Mullen has a lot of things. Swagger ain’t one of them.

    G-Day attendance: 42, 736.17.
We’ll pick next year’s G-Day attendance in Jacksonville this October.

Everything I needed to know about how “awesome” Dan Mullen is came out in his locker room speech. Sad.

Here’s some numbers for Dan: 73-10
I believe that’s the points tally for how much a Kirby-coached UGA team has beaten a Dan Mullen team.

Not a Steve Superior fan, but you have to give him credit. He usually backed up his mouth with wins (which made you hate him even more). Mullen usually just puts his foot in his mouth

I’m honest about how i feel. Fuck those motherfuckers! I vacation in the Keys with a pack of gaytards for the last 25 years. Had to take a lot of shit. When the Diamond Dawgs sweep their ass in May it will be SWEET!
But I’ll keep my mouth shut. I’m not the one with no class. They know we own ’em in football and beat ’em in Gainesville in basketball.

Damn Ranger! You bout gave me a heart attack. When I first read your comment, I thought you were saying that you vacation every year in the Keys with a bunch of gay fellas. It being the Keys and all, you can understand my confusion. I now realize that you were just insulting your gator buddies. Whew! That was a close one!

They need to concentrate on beating KY and not finishing 3rd in the East..other than that, F’em.

  10. For a team that got boat raced by Missouri and us, lost to Kentucky for the first time in 3 DECADES (and not because they don’t play them every year), struggled to beat Vandy, and beat South Carolina at home by 4, Mullen does a lot of talking. I imagine Kirby will be ready to lay another beatdown on them in Jacksonville, Georgia.

“Swagger” is not what comes to mind when I see Mullen walking the side line or answering media questions. I am looking forward to punishing them this season. It can’t get here soon enough.

Mullen seems to have plenty of time on his hands to talk about meaningless shit. He better get that swagger in while he can. Kirby’s got a fricken conga line of top recruits from across the nation making visits, including the best from fu’s back yard. Mullen may be “playing coy”, but Kirby sure as hell ain’t.

He’d be smart to follow Geoff Collins’ lead. Maybe he can be the king of the Huddle House.

If you’re old enough, you remember Pepper Rogers at Tech who used to troll Vince on a regular basis. Pepper and his motorcycle soon moved on. Trolling doesn’t win ball games.

Got Sr. hated/hates Pepper Rodgers with a white hot passion. I never quite understood it but to this day if I ask “Who was that tech coach that……” I never get to finish the question and it doesn’t matter, the answer is some form of “Pepper @#&*ing Rodgers” followed by a colorful critique of ol’ Pepper’s questionable lineage. I’ll ask something like “WTF did Pepper Rodgers ever do to you?” and that only makes it worse.Maybe he’ll calm down one of these days and I’ll get the story.

    Keep poking the Bear, Mullen.
During the WLOCP post game presser, I hope every Georgia player explains how your mouth was the catalyst for the 60 point beatdown they put on UF.

And Deandre Swift? Dam I thought Gurley was big but this cat is a fuckin monster. I really hope that when we get to that stretch of Florida Auburn And A+M he’s got HS legs under him. GO DAWGS

Two things, one, its been a long time since i wore my Georgia belt/hat/shirt down in Florida and actually look forward to running into a damn gator, and two, I don’t know how well our team will do this upcoming season but I’m pretty sure they’re going to whack Florida with all they’ve got. Heady times we’re in these days.

  19. JCDawg83

I love Mullen running his pecker hole. Don’t think for a minute Kirby isn’t writing all of this down and will use it before the WLOCP to fire up the players. Kirby already hates Florida, he has the mirror image of Spurrier’s hate for Georgia because of his experience as a player. Mullen fanning the flames is great for Georgia.

Sounds like the gators are trying to convince themselves they hired the right guy.

Senator, I see you’ve found the Gator equivalent of StingTalk. Please keep that site bookmarked for our entertainment purposes this year.

Mullen needs to win something before popping off at the mouth. Just sayin.’
