#FWIW UGA Fact of the Week #ItWasOnlyAScrimmage
For #GDay in 2002, QBs David Greene & D.J. Shockley combined to complete 20% of their passes (6 of 30).

Ah, if I’d only been blogging back then…

Just curious…Would you have been predicting gloom and doom based on that performance?

I bought into Greene after the Hobnail Boot game, so… no.

That was one of my all time favorite plays. One cool thing was the reaction on the sideline. CMR saw how the play set up and before the ball was snapped, turned to the assistant coaches exclaiming, “We’ve got it, we’ve got it!”. Then seconds later, the side line erupted with excitement.

Loudest and quietest game that I ever been to…within minutes. Coulda heard a pin drop, it was a beautiful thing. Don’t think I have ever seen a stadium empty out that quickly either.

I love seeing the replay of that game, featuring the Tennessee broadcasters! They thought they had it won…heh heh…

At that time, I worked for a UT fan who was at the game. He told me that outside the stadium afterwards, he was passing a group of celebrating Georgia fans, and made eye contact with one of them, a young woman. She said to him, “Hey mister, do you know when the last time Georgia beat Tennessee in Knoxville was?” Expecting ‘1980’ or some such as an answer, he said, “No.” She looked at her watch and said, “About… 18 minutes ago!”
Still makes me smile.

HA!!…too funny. I was there also with a buddy (UT). That one humbled them pretty quick, pretty quiet at the end, like a funeral. Trying to remember, thinks this one made it 2 in a row for us, after them winning something like 9 in a row. Very satisfying day/evening.
You never hear too much about ole Fred Gibson in this game either. I believe he was a freshman and this was his first start. Caught a LONG one, 55 or 60. Ole “Freddy” was only about 180 or so on a 6’ 4” frame. He was not afraid to go up and get it. Thinks some of those tall fellows we have now could learn something from him.
Gibson was one of the best!

Fred Gibson was the star of my first game at Sanford Stadium. Vs Kentucky in 2001, he had 201 yards, which I believe is a freshman record for UGA. It’s second most all time for any UGA receiver.

I’ve always said Cory Phillips should have gotten a shot that year.

Shockley and Richt deserve a ton of credit. Richt get credit for somehow, someway keeping Shockley on campus and Shockley deserves credit for being patient and waiting for his time. And boy what a year he had when his time finally came!

With that 2002 defense, I bet the Havoc Rate was off the charts.

The early 2000s was an amazing time to be in undergrad at UGA. Went 4-0 vs UT.
To be fair though, i contend that we are the most “triggered” class when it comes to the Florida game. Going 0’fer college against them while averaging 12 wins over our last 2 seasons will do that to you. Playing them felt as tight as playing Bama does now as far as getting over the hump. (but we were demonstrably better, so the pain was excruciating)

I was at this G-Day! If memory serves, it was hot as hell and the team visibly didn’t care much about the game.

November 15, 1952: #4 Georgia Tech 7, #12 Alabama 3
In one of the biggest games of Georgia Tech’s third National Championship season, two of the highest ranked teams to ever face off on Grant Field saw Georgia Tech defeat Alabama
My dad was at that that game and always talked about that game he went to Tech and played football there he never forgive me for going to to Georgia. Yeah it’ was a bad family thing back then Dad was all About Georgia Tech and Mom just stayed basically neutral then I went off into the army but Dad never forgave me for going to UGA yeah he died a true Georgia Tech man and he hated Georgia yeah crazy house back then and my sister went to Auburn that made it worse

Yes, her going to Auburn made it worse. During your Fathers era Tech was Auburn’s biggest rival.
