First cornerback selected in the draft.
Sitting out the Sugar Bowl really killed Deandre Baker’s future.
Filed under Georgia Football, The NFL Is Your Friend.
“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
So, he sat out a game. Big deal. Herschel sat out his senior season and I got over it. At least my doctor says I’m over it.

I’m still not over it. 😉

I was over it. Then ya’ll reminded me. I blame the NCAA.

All of those rumors were BS. If Kirby wasn’t happy with Baker or there was something to the rumor, he wouldn’t have been invited by the Bakers to attend.

He did fall a good bit from where he was projected not too long ago that’s a fact, but still first cornerback taken in the draft is impressive.

Feel like that partially had to do w/ his somewhat pedestrian (for a CB) 40-time in the combine. Could be wrong.

I think it was more likely that teams were making early runs on different positions (DT, QB, OL) because of the wealth of really good corners in the draft pool. Could have picked up someone really good in the 2nd or 3rd round. Says a lot about DB that he was picked up in the 1st.

His pick is coming with some “What are those idiot Giants doing?” feedback from the commentariat, admittedly due to some degree to being sprayed with some of the Daniel Jones at #6 stink.
I think he’s going to be a great corner in the League, and right now he has a shot to make quite a few pundits who dropped him late in the game eat some crow.

Giants now have a three-dawg defense. Will have to watch them now.
And the UGA hype video team never sleeps. Always B. Crootin’.

Exactly. Which is why that BS about the coaching staff airing complaints about Baker was ludicrous. No way they’d badmouth a kid likely to be a high draft pick.

I don’t see the Georgia coaching staff playing a part in it as there is nothing to gain for them. But there is a long history of gamesmanship among NFL teams for the draft.
The fact the Giants traded up for him should be good news for Deande’s contract.

Did the Giants believe the Patriots wanted Baker?

Seems the most logical reason. Looking at the Patriots’ surprise with their pick, must have shook them up quite a bit. Everyone really had Renfroe tagged as a Patriot WR lock. Still may end up there, but the kid okays “big”, he may not last. Happy for Baker being the 1st CB, he certainly played like the best the past two years.

At this point, anytime I hear negative chatter about a potential draftee, I assume it’s coming from a team that actually wants him but is trying to drive his price down.

Could it have been former coaching staff trying to sabotage the Dawgs on the recruiting trail?

Good question.

If they play on Thursday or Sunday night, would that make it a “3 Dawg Night”?

Perhaps for some, but it’s usually after bedtime for the over-55 crowd.

Kirby probably said, “You can come to the Sugar Bowl(no one gives a damn anyway) but you have to give UGA a shout out on draft night.”

Was that a narrative? I mean, Leonard Fournette was (over)drafted fourth after sitting out his bowl game. I guess people have to write about something.

The better narrative is the one about Deandre (and the Clemson guys) coming back for their senior seasons.
Paid off handsomely.

Wouldn’t shock me to know the giants put that out there so he’d be around at that spot.

Sitting out the sugar bowl? That’s child’s play. Nick bosa sat out most of the season and got drafted #2.
It’s like I tell our junior guys at work, as long as it’s not illegal or unethical never ever don’t do what’s best for you and your family because the organization will certainly do what’s best for itself and you’re kidding yourself if you think there is a shred of loyalty to you.

I saw a hilarious insta post on Bosa, who was showing off his OSU jacket liner: “Bosa proudly showing his unwavering devotion to a team he quit on mid-season”.
But yeah, these guys gotta make calls like this now, and they are obviously paying off.

Then you have Devin White of LSU, a senior who did play in his bowl game, and was the #5 overall pick. Did it make a difference? Who knows, but I have to think there are a few GM’s that appreciated the fact that the guy wanted to play one last game with his teammates. With that, I don’t blame players like Baker or Greedy Williams who didn’t want to risk injury.

Devin White was going to be gone early regardless of his decision. He is this draft’s R. I don’t think his decision to play in the bowl game changed anything about his draft prospects.
I think the concern with Baker’s size and 40 time did more to push him down than whether or not he played in the Sugar Bowl. Also, the first round didn’t have many skill players taken overall.

He only fell because the position group as a whole fell, because of the quality there. There are a lot of good CBs available in this class, so no one wanted to use a high pick when you could get good value in round 2 or 3.

Said differently, there isn’t a franchise type of corner available in this draft (Deion, Champ). Most teams saw better value at their spots drafting a different position.
If Baker or Williams were franchise type of players, it wouldn’t have mattered that there was a good player available in a later round. Either would have gone much earlier.

Baloney. First round pay scale is slotted. No way in hell a team pays top five money because it appreciates a gesture to other college kids.
It may make a difference between using a last round pick on him, but not top five money.

Gosh, two of UGA’s 2015 signing class are first round picks. Both were 3 stars.

Who was the other 3 star from the 2015 recruiting class?

Deandre Baker and Johnathan Abram were first-rounders last night, plus Roquan Smith (four-star) last year. As a DC, Pruitt could recruit.
