Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium

It’s official.

University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead and J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity announced a proposal today to create Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium, in honor of legendary Bulldogs head football coach and athletics director Vincent J. Dooley.

“Coach Dooley’s many contributions to this university can be seen across campus,” said Morehead, “from Georgia athletics, where he achieved unrivaled success, to the learning environment, where today many academic programs and initiatives bear his name, such as the Dooley Library Endowment Fund to the Dooley Professorship in Horticulture. The university community will continue to benefit from his service and dedication for generations to come.”

Pending approval of the plans, an official ceremony to dedicate Dooley Field will take place inside Sanford Stadium prior to the Bulldogs’ 2019 home opener on September 7.

Too bad Michael Adams won’t be there.  Congrats to Coach Dooley for the honor.

I am not happy about Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium. I hate stuff like that. It’s Sanford Stadium, that’s all it ever needed to be. What happens if Kirby wins a national title or two, where does his name go? Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium between the Kirby Hedges? 😒

West End Zone, they should actually name it for him now.

Agreed. We really want to have multiple names like FU’s stadium.

The hedges should be named after Herschel and the South stands should be named after Metamucil.

    • Maybe they will finally eradicate the awful “Butt Smear” and create the Something for Kirbs instead. Lets let him try win a title before worrying about it.

Either way – happy for Dooley. Well deserved.

      Now about that Herschel statue…

That was kinda my thinking also. Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall was the original name. That could still be applied to the front part and museum area. Then you would have the Payne IPF and Woodruff practice fields. Name the new weight room after another big doner. After all the new expansion, call it the Vincent Dooley football operations center. I know the entire area including the track is named for Dooley now, but that has seemed awkward and a bit vague. Putting his name on the entire football complex seems like a fitting tribute.

I get why you don’t like it, and most of the time I would agree with you – naming stuff gets out of hand. Just drive from Athens to Atlanta and count the names for various bridges, roads, etc. But this is going happen either now, while he is still alive and can take some satisfaction in it, or later posthumously. Now is better, imo. Dooley isn’t just some politician who wanted to get a road named after himself. He’s earned it. There are probably more seats in the stadium as a result of what he did for UGA than anyone else.

Sanford had one level South grandstand and one level north grandstand with a total capacity of about 40,000 on the day we hired Dooley in December 1963. We actually played some home games at Grant Field as a part of doubleheaders with Tech to try to make ends meet before we hired Dooley.
His immediate success and the excitement it generated triggered the expansion in 1967. We added north and south 300 level.
Yes, Sanford has more than twice as many seats now thanks to what Dooley built. While I personally think it has too large a capacity for the surrounding infrastructure, any fair minded person would agree that Dooley left a huge legacy.

Think it would be appropriate to name something after Michael Adams at the same ceremony. There’s a port-A-Potty that gets placed outside the Coliseum during football season that would be a good choice.

Not a fan of this, but it was pretty much a foregone conclusion with the new governor, am sure he will be there.

I’m all for honoring Coach Dooley. I’m glad to see a grand gesture to honor him while he’s still here to enjoy it. And, I like that it will annoy Mike Adams. Just wish they’d found something else to name after CVD. it’s like the Atlanta airport. Add 100 names to it, it’s still Hartsfield. The stadium will always be Sanford to me.

I REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY hope mike adams fumes about it, though. That would make it mostly ok. 😉

  10. I think we’re going to see everyone still call it Sanford Stadium. Dooley Field is going to be painted on the field like Coach K Court at Cameron.

I’ll always remember how he almost left for Auburn 3 weeks before playing for the national championship, and how he and Michael Adams tried to use the men’s basketball program as a weapon against the other, causing damage that has yet to be overcome.

I like Dooley and appreciate what he’s done for UGA. I was only 11 when it was announced he was leaving for Auburn and I remember being devastated, believing it would surely cost us the Sugar Bowl. But after years to examine it, I think Erk would have rocked the rest of the eighties. Hearing about how much the players loved him and how hard they played for him, I believe they would’ve blasted Notre Dame, and possibly won the MNC in ‘81 and ‘82.
I’m convinced Erk would have elevated the program further after taking the hand-off from Dooley, and believe the slow decline after the ‘83 season wouldn’t have occurred. To me, Dooley having a change of heart after accepting the Auburn job is a watershed moment that led to the mediocrity of the program that began with the ‘84 season and lasted, with a few exceptions, until the 2017 season.

I spend more time thinking about Erk being the head guy after Dooley stepped down.

That’s when Erk should have gotten it.

Not sure Erk would have been well placed to take over and be successful at that moment in 1980.

After his success in statesboro, you’d think it was a no-brainer but chuck Knapp had different ideas. And that I will never forgive.

I was a senior in 1980. Everyone I knew thought, “don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. We still got Erk!” We were actually excited Dooley was leaving. I’m still sorry Erk never got his chance at UGA. Having said that, there’s no denying Dooley did many great things for the University of Georgia. He deserves to be honored.

I agree with you about the effect the Adams and Dooley feud had on basketball and I would object to having his name on anything basketball related. You are correct about what he and Adams wrought on the basketball program.

As for the December 1980 flirtation with Auburn, I understand the attraction of his alma mater offering a promotion and a raise, but I also remember he turned it down and weeks later coached us to a national championship. I don’t hold December 1980 against him. Certainly the good he did for Georgia football outweighed listening too, and rejecting, Auburn.

    Zuppke Field at Memorial Stadium.

    https://illinoisalumni.org/2016/11/07/mr-razzle-dazzle-coach-bob-zuppke/

The contributions Bob Zuppke made to the sport of football are like the contributions Stone Age man made to tools: His brainstorms are now commonplace. The huddle? Zuppke invented it after realizing that just shouting instructions was not a very secure way to call a play, and nobody has had a better idea since. The long snap from the center to the punter? Zuppke was the one who said, “Make that a spiral.” The screen pass? Zup. The linebacker position? Also Zup. The forward pass? Well, maybe he didn’t invent it, but he surely used it more frequently and inventively than any of his peers. But more than any single innovation, even more than his steadfast, unyielding defense, Zuppke was known for his inventive alignments and trick plays. The flea flicker, the sidewinder, the whirligig, the razzle dazzle, the whoa back, the flying trapeze, the comparatively conventional on-side kick, and other high-risk, high-reward stunts and fakes all originated in the mad laboratory of Dr. Zuppke.

I am glad it will piss Adams off, and Vince is a fine man, who made contributions to UGA athletics. But I am against this 100%, no that it matters. Frankly, Vince was a better athletic director than he was a football coach…by far. Majority wanted him run off long before Herschel saved him. Even then, he minimized was was possible in those three years. Worse, he completely fumbled the departure and succession which destroyed all momentum, and set UGA football back over a decade. Naming an athletic complex, and erecting a statue is plenty enough recognition, the field is going too far. It will always be Sanford to me, never Dooley field. Another crummy decision by Morehead and McStupid.

I expect we are close in age so I lived as a student and fan through the same times as you. I remember the mediocrity of 1972, 1973 and 1974 lead to some fans grumbling and I saw the “Dump Dooley “ banner you saw. To say, however, that “Majority wanted him run off…..” before 1980 is textbook hyperbole.

You are savvy enough to know that UGA football for the 15 years prior to 1964 was nothing like the Dooley years.

While I agree Dooley probably deserved to be honored, I think it should have been more targeted for his life long contribution to the university, than his “excellence” as a football coach. Name a new building after him or something similar.

Much more importantly, where the heck is Herschel’s statue,. He was only voted the greatest college football player in the modern era!

We are keeping the stadium’s historic name unchanged. It will not by Sanford-Dooley Stadium or Dooley-Sanford Stadium. We are changing the identity of the play surface from “field” to “Dooley Field,” which hardy seems an affront to history and tradition. UGA has a bunch of fields so we are differentiating one.
