First impressions and all that: Breaking Away was the first one I ever saw (just an age thing), and it remains my favorite. Bad News Bears (Matthau version) second. I wouldn’t put the following anywhere near a Top 10 list, but Woodlawn‘s football and social side was surprisingly good. The ending of it was kind of infuriating in a “oh hell no it didn’t play out like that” kind of way. Kind of odd for a movie extolling the power of Christianity to end in a big lie, but the rest of it was surprisingly good.

I’d have a hard time picking a favorite movie, but for favorote scene from a sports movie it’s hard to top the prison scrimmage in Necessary Roughness. Especially Dick Butkus’s welcome.
For a favorite line from a sports movie, I nominate “Peave love, dope! NOW GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!”

As my boys enter the sports arena, I have to take the cheap way out and say that my favorite movie is a combination of moments in different movies. Lollygagging locker room scene in Bull Durham, no crying in baseball, the ‘too high’ fan comment in Major League, and the substitute umpire scene in Naked Gun. Obviously, these come in handy for random comments during my kids baseball moments.

The Natural is a damn-near perfect film. The original version of The Longest Yard never gets old. Though it’s kind of “jokey” now, seeing the first Rocky in 1976 was a fantastic experience. And I love the Warren Beatty version of Heaven Can Wait.

Everyone probably already knows this, but Bill Murray actually bowled 3 consecutive strikes in one take for the film’s climax. So his reaction, and the crowd’s too, in that scene is genuine.

I can’t pick one, so I’m just going to list some of the sports movies I’ve enjoyed.
Dodgeball: remember the 5 D’s, “dodge, duck, dip, dive, and…dodge”
Pretty much any sports movie with Kevin Costner in it. Of course Bull Durham and Field of Dreams stand above the rest. I wasn’t too enamored with For Love of the Game when I first saw it, but it’s grown on me with subsequent viewings. I liked Draft Day too.
All of the Rocky movies, with the exception of Rocky 5. Creed II was better than I expected, would definitely recommend watching it if you haven’t already, although the training montage (a hallmark of the Rocky franchise) was a little weak in my opinion.
Necessary Roughness is a good one. I’ve always liked Scott Bakula.
I’m surprised that no one’s mentioned The Program, since this is a college football blog after all. “WOOOOO! STARTING DEFENSE! PLACE AT THE TABLE! WOOOOOOOOO!”
One of my favorites that doesn’t seem to get much love is The Replacements with Keanu Reeves. It’s one of those movies that I’ll stop on whenever I’m flipping channels no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

One thing about Tin Cup that has always bugged me: he had about 250 to the last green and he was hitting 3 wood, correct? On the range after the qualifier for the bet with Simms, he hit a 7 iron 223. “Toed it a bit, but it’ll do!” He didn’t have a club between 7 iron and 3 wood he could have hit into that green with a little more loft, so as to not roll back into the drink? Otherwise, I love the movie. Shelton is great with sports movies, I love White Men Can’t Jump and Bull Durham. Haven’t seen his other films.

I watched this the other night.. the bigger gripe is after his 2nd round 62, he shot a 3rd round 64, with no mention. so he went 83-62-64 in the US Open.
Additionally, i find it laughable that Peter Jacobsen won the Open. That hack never sniffed a major.

You have to understand that the “tax cuts pay for themselves” thing is not something they actually believe. Reality tells you that every time.
What they believe is that it’s easier politically to cut taxes than to raise them. Plus, if the government goes broke they can give everyone the choice of:
Do you really want to raise taxes on the “job creators?”
Can we really afford these “entitlements” you call Social Security and Medicare? Don’t they need to be cut, I mean “reformed?”
It’s all a long con. The sad part is that no one on the left can actually win that argument vs. a friggin’ orange idiot. That’s the saddest most frustrating thing to me. They are stealing all the gains the middle class made after the Great Depression and in broad fucking daylight. The people most likely to be hurt are ironically the most likely to assent to it, albeit unwittingly.

Last I saw, tax cuts paid for themselves in the sense that the govt is taking in more revenues than before. Same thing happened under Reagan. Problem 1 is we won’t cut spending which more than offsets the new revenues and interest payments on the debt are rising. Problem 2 is when the gig is up, we can only hike taxes so much before the economy goes into recession and we actually lose tax revenue. If the govt defaults on debt payments, that would create another financial crisis.

The issue is that the only spending cut that is actually popular with the American public is Foreign Aid. Americans, especially Baby Boomers, lover government spending. They just hate paying taxes. They are really Hamiltonian while pretending to be Jeffersonian.
The Baby Boomers ascended into political dominance around 1980. At the time, the national debut was approximately $1T. They voted for all of the spending and all of the tax cuts. This has led to a debt of $22,027,434,332,952.25 as of yesterday. That is $21T (plus interest!) that those fuckers stole from future generations. Unfortunately, Boomers are still in political power as GenX is small. We are waiting for you to die, and your death is a necessary step to fixing our problems as the Boomers are the impediment to getting anything done.
Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, the Military, and the Interest on the Debt take up more than 100% of revenue. Every single dollar of non-Defense Discretionary Spending is borrowed. In order to make any progress on controlling spending increase will have to come from one of those programs. Politically, you can’t touch any of them. I have a very simple solution though. End Medicare. Boomers refused to pay for the healthcare of their parents (i.e. the deficit spending required to pay for Medicare in the past), so we should refuse to pay for their healthcare. When they can’t afford healthcare, they will die off quickly due to being morbidly obese lard-asses with type-2 diabetes and clogged arteries. Their timely deaths will also elevate the high amounts of money spent on Social Security benefits. In 10 years we would be running a huge surplus.
With that surplus, we can then redesign our Retirement and and Health Care systems to be funded by prior investment instead of taxation / debt. All it takes is letting the worst generation of people in American history get what they deserve.

You can’t blame the national debt entirely on the boomers. It was their grandparents who voted for FDR and social security and their parents who voted for LBJ and Medicare. Just those two programs are over $100 trillion in the red. Taxes can’t get high enough to pay for those programs.

As I noted in my first post, the total federal debt first hit $1T in 1981. It is now over $22T. If you eliminated all the debt accrued before the Reagan Administration, you would get back to the same debt level we have now sometime around the Superbowl.
Even then, up until the Boomers ascended into power, previous generations had been lowering the Debt to GDP ratio at a steady clip. Older generations were funding their spending by having reasonable rates of taxation on the middle-class. Then, middle-class Boomers decided they shouldn’t have to pay taxes. Now more than 85% of income taxes are paid by 20% of the population. That is how you get this:
Social Security and Medicare aren’t 100T in the red, they have $100T in unfunded liabilities that the Boomers voted for themselves. In my plan, we don’t pay that $100T. Instead, we let those freeloaders die.

Not exactly. You’re looking at debt and assuming it’s a tax problem. It’s not. Tax revenue has gone from 7% of gdp in 1900 to 33% of gdp today. But spending has far outpaced the revenue.
And proposing to kill everyone is good for a laugh, but it’s not happening. So entitlement programs put in place by the Boomer’s grandparents will continue until it’s impossible to continue.

Debt is neither a taxation problem nor a spending problem. It is a conscious act of deciding to spend more than you are willing to pay in taxation. I’m no fan of Social Security or Medicare; I would love to see massive spending cuts. As I said before, the Boomer’s Grandparents created the programs, but they were willing to fund them. In fact, they funded them while paying down the debt in terms of the Debt to GDP ratio. We have known about the upcoming unfunded liabilities for Social Security and Medicare for decades. What did the Boomers propose as the solution? Oh yeah, cutting their taxes again while creating new unfunded programs for themselves like Medicare Part D.
You might not be able to notice a modest proposal when you see one. That is fine. My more general point is that other generations should not let the Boomers get a free ride. They didn’t fund their parents retirement / healthcare; we should feel no sympathy for any haircut we make those freeloading bastards take.

Hey Got Cowdog, how was fishing last weekend? My buddy and I caught a mess Saturday evening and he caught more early Sunday morning. Crappie on minnows. Shellcracker and bluegill on worms.

RR I am regrettably 0-fer for crappie off the dock. I hung an underwater LED light and had a lot of baitfish around but no bites. No structure under the dock though and that probably has something to do with it.
What I did get treated to was a solid rain on the tin roof of the dock while I was fishing and one of the most beautiful twilight’s I’ve ever seen. A bottle of Jameson’s had found it’s way into my bag so it was a most enjoyable evening.

Hard to pick just one but many of the ones listed like Rocky III, Necessary Roughness, The Replacements, Caddyshack, Longest Yard (the original) and Remember the Titans would be on my list. One I haven’t seen that would also be on my list is Vision Quest. As an old wrestler I can tell you that it was a good portrayal of high school wrestling. All the Right Moves was really similar to my high school football experience (unfortunately without the Lea Thompson part).

I will say this, the tax changes (I don’t know what they are, I have an accountant that does) for 2018 makes it the first year in 20 that I don’t have to pay additional taxes. If the Donald was responsible for that, well, I guess a thank you is in order. That doesn’t change my view of his character.
