The dream is over, Dan.

Just in case anyone was unaware, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and Florida head coach Dan Mullen are not the best of friends. That puts an added layer to one of college football’s best rivalries. And looks as if Mullen threw some more kerosene on the fire Monday when he was discussing transfers.

While talking to reporters, Mullen appears to take a shot at Georgia, more specifically how everything unfolded regarding quarterback Justin Fields, who one of the most high profile players to enter the new college football transfer portal following the 2018 regular season.

“I’d think we did a poor job recruiting if guys were coming in and then immediately walking out the door because it was something different than what they thought it would be and we lied to them during recruiting, or we sold them on a dream that wasn’t true,” Mullen said, according to Thomas Goldkamp of Swamp247.

Is there such a thing as self-snarkery?  If not, there should be.

The perfect ending here would be for Georgia to sign Steele.  Don’t laugh, Warren recruited him when he was still at UF.  Listening, football gods?

UPDATE:  Well, this isn’t good.

Florida freshman cornerback Chris Steele is transferring from the school.

The former five-star recruit has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Steele met with UF coach Dan Mullen on Wednesday night and informed him, a source close to the situation told The Sun.

The decision stems from a request Steele made to the staff during his first month on campus, the source said. He asked to be moved to a different dorm because he was uncomfortable rooming with quarterback Jalon Jones, his classmate.

The staff did not plan to move Steele until the summer, which upset Steele and his parents, according to the source.

Then two female students accused Jones of sexual assault in the players’ dorm rooms on April 6. That prompted Steele to seek a transfer.

Jones has not been charged but has left the school.

Regarding Steele’s decision to transfer, the Florida football program had no official comment on Thursday.

That’s funny.  Mullen’s usually not at a loss for words.

Sounds like a slam dunk transfer waiver request, too.

UPDATE #2:  Jesus, there are some morons on the Florida staff (Assistant Director of Player Personnel and Development).

Dude.  Dude.  Wish the kid well and STFU.

Mullen think’s he channelling Spurrier, but he’s really channelling Junior taking jabs at his former boss. This just keeps getting better and better.

  2. HiAltDawg

We might need to limit “Coach” Mullen’s comments to the Play Pen where they might fit in…

  3. Ben

I thought this was a repost, but then I remembered the other guy who left was a quarterback.

  4. Dylan Dreyer's Booty

Sweet and salty Gator tears! We can only hope he chooses UGA.

  5. Muttley

It’s all a part of Dan the Man’s Master Plan. While distracting Georgia with recruiting setbacks, the lopsided losses in Jax, and those terrific zingers- Kirby’s s bundle of nerves, just wondering when the next one’ll come- he and Bianchi are secretly closing the gap.

    Solid self burn there, Dan.

Because it’s Florida the backstory is very Florida….

    I’m going 38, Dan:

Mullen has Spurrier’s mouth with Muschamp’s resume. (I’m not clever enough to have made that up!)

So they’ve lost two of their top four players from what was only a pretty good class by SEC standards to start with. This does make me wonder just what was going on with Jones and how long the staff knew about it before the sexual assault allegations arose.

This is one of the ‘unintended’ consequences of the Transfer Portal – It gives the student athlete more leverage. Don’t like your roomate (or more likely don’t want to be part of sexual assault investigation)? Coaches won’t listen to you or make the change? – Find a coach that will.

    • I ask you — who among us would not want to be part of a sexual assault investigation? What a prima donna.

Boys will be boys, amirite? That’s just good clean fun.

      • Trbodawg

I apologize. I was unclear in my post. In NO WAY was I trying to imply he was a prima donna – I totally agree with him. I was attempting to impart there are always unintended consequences. Where prior to the portal, a kid was stuck with what the coach said, now they have recourse. That’s a good thing.

        • ugafidelis

I got your original intent. It wasn’t as if Steele was saying, “let me evade this,” it was more like, “this dude is f’ed up and if the coaches won’t get involved I’ve got to get out of here.”

There’s schadenfreude, and then there’s this. Hot damn, this is fun, isn’t it y’all?

So Steele sounds like a good kid. Found out his roommate was a piece of shit and didn’t want to be associated with him. Sometimes that’s hard to do at his age. Asked his program to help him out and they slow walked it, so he said “I’m gone”. Sign him up Kirby!

Boy, the negative recruiting just writes itself doesn’t it? If Dan thought he had problems, just wait until this story hits the trail.

  19. Biggus Rickus

I’d think we did a poor job recruiting if guys were coming in and then immediately walking out the door because they tried to rape a girl or weren’t listened to when they wanted to get away from a guy who turned out to be an attempted rapist.

  20. stoopnagle

    Always Be Recruiting.

Looks like “3rd and Grantham” is back on the menu, boys!

  21. NC DAWG

    Seems we missed this one…

Florida’s Brian Edwards arrested on misdemeanor battery charge
Edwards became the second Gator alleged of violence against a woman within a week.

    • Russ

The top 1% of the top 1%.

This is the guy that kept Jeffery Simmons as a recruit when he was shown on tape punching a woman.

      • Simmons didn’t just punch a woman. He was beating a woman who was already in the fetal position on the ground. With that tape, I have no idea how he did not end up in prison… especially in Mississippi.

He was suspended for a game, though. That seems fair. /s

  22. Jack Klompus

Was Mullen not paying attention when he worked for Urbie? He would have never let the first incident get out on his watch.

  24. psyopdawg

Waiting on Mullen’s counter narrative. Inevitably he’ll say something else that requires yet another one

  25. CPark58

And to think there were folks that wanted to hire Dan Mullen at UGA. McGarrity dodged a bullet with that one.

    • Corch Irvin Meyers New USC Trojans Corch (2020)

No, McGarity didn’t get lucky, WE GOT LUCKY that McGarity didn’t get his way.

He wanted to bring in Dan Mullen.

      The boosters wanted Kirby Smart.

McGarity did what he was told.

  26. Milledge Hall

    Damn ditch lizards!!
And I thought the dumpster inferno was in Knoxville.
Looks like it’s Dumpster Dan’s Inferno now!!!

  27. Texas Dawg

It seems that the only reason Mullen opens his mouth is to change feet. You just could not write fiction that would be better than this.

  28. NC DAWG

    You know it’s a good day…

Comments from a Fl fan from another blog site re the Steele situation:

“Don’t forget the Florida vs Colorado announcement. App St would be excited about that one. Things are heading in the opposite direction FAST. And it wasn’t 3 games ago our “star” QB was written off forever by the fans. This season could be BAD.”

  29. practicaldawg

So I guess the talent gap status is back to… widening.

  30. Gurkha Dawg

This is turning out to be a very good day.

  31. Biggen

So they had their 2021 crown 5* jewel commit just de-commit:

This was an excellent day to be a UGA fan.

  32. NC DAWG

I suppose rejoicing over someone else’s misfortune reveals a serious character flaw…

    But…Hell Week in Gainesville continues

Ocala (Fla.) Vanguard 2021 defensive end Bryce Langston announced Thursday afternoon that he de-committed from Florida via his Twitter account.

“After the long days and nights of me thinking about the recruiting process, talking to my family & coaches I will announce that I will be de-committing from the University of Florida,” Langston said in his written statement on Twitter.

  33. I’ve seen several folks here and elsewhere suggest that Kirby has kicked off an era that one day we will look back on as the golden age of UGA football. As a resident of Florida for me that day is now.

  34. Xon

Nom nom nom tasty tasty ineptitude with a schadenfreude sweetener

And to add a cherry on top, 5 star kid from I believe from DC just committed to the DAWGS. It’s been a good day DAWG NATION.

  36. Jt10mc (the other one)

Not only are they as a fanbase and program reminiscent in many ways of how we used to be but are combining it with a tone deafness that is simply delicious to watch play out!
