Dwindling attendance a concern for UGA?
“Well, it’s a concern, but it’s not a concern to Georgia. I’m concerned about Georgia, but when you look at trends and things like that, you say, well what are we looking at 10 years from now? I don’t want to be looking there trying to schedule. You can’t do these schedules a year out, two years out. You’re going to have to build a long way out. Let’s say attendance is struggling. (inaudible) People want to see Georgia play FSU, Oklahoma, Texas, UCLA, whomever it may be.”
You read a quote like that and you realize what a complete joke Mark Bradley’s paean to Greg McGarity, Scheduling Guru, really is. Smart’s comfortable thinking ten years down the road; McGarity can’t even find the value in putting together a master plan for Georgia’s facilities. There’s more thought — more valuable thought — in that Q&A response than I’ve read in all of Greg’s columns and Bradley interviews combined.
I’ve never been a big fan of the football head coach becoming the athletic director, but in Kirby’s case I’m prepared to make an exception.

I’ve been saying that too. Kirby ought to be AD as well as football HC. McGarity is an empty suit and a liability to the program.

Today’s posts have included issues college football and UGA specifically have to deal with. Transfer portal, scheduling, player compensation, gambling, oversight of officiating, et al. I would love to jump in and join the diagnosis but I think palliative care is more appropriate for college football. The beginning of the end has begun.

I say that because the issues are defined now. Five years ago, the concern was simply that “something” was happening to CF. Sanctioned gambling, oversight of officials and officiating are two developing issues that have serious ramifications. Meaningless bowls, expansion of the playoffs and schedule tweaks are interesting to discuss but have unintended consequence. So, I’m not sure if your point is that the end began some time back or has yet to happen. Which issue, or issues, do you believe will be the most detrimental?

The end began when the folks running CFB decided to broaden its support from regionally based to nationally based.

I know where you’re coming from, but, its pretty damn nifty to beat the orange off our east rivals and have a good solid team. Try to focus on what has always mattered to us, win the conference. The rest is just exhibition that can be fun.

I was typing a comment about McGarity already working for Kirby in response to the comment about the “new deal” being negotiated for the Cocktail Party yesterday when I was rudely interrupted by one of the people that sign my paycheck.
I think this is closer to the truth than is realized, Greg working for Kirby. whether Greg realizes it or not….

Agree on the football end, for the most part. The other sports, not a chance Kirby has much of a care. Pretty much the same with Saban at Bama.

Well, Kirby was a finance major with excellent grades. Being a top lieutenant at Alabama under Saban was probably a pretty good masters program on athletic department management (already seems to be paying off at UGA). I’ve heard worse ideas.

Love Kirby’s confidence and it’s great for fans and recruiting.
If I recall correctly, Coach Richt wasn’t overly thrilled when Damon did this. Those teams lost in Boulder, Stillwater, and in the dome against Boise State. Once could also argue the long trip to Tempe played a role in that team laying an egg the following week.
Let’s see if these teams can back it up.

Was at both Boulder and Stillwater – from a fan’s perspective, at least those games were ones you wanted to see and attend.

We choked in Boulder. Refs screwed us in Stillwater, plus OSU won with an ineligible player.

McGarity scheduled the Boise game.
If McGarity doesn’t suspend AJ, that 2010 team doesn’t start 1-4 including that loss in Boulder (if I remember correctly, he spent most of the night trying to get back into football shape).
We were in the OSU game until that Big 12 crew called Reshad Jones for unnecessary roughness for just making a play to break up a pass. Not saying we would have won that game, but that call guaranteed the loss.
