Is it time yet?

Yesterday’s post about Seth Emerson’s Georgia preview spawned a lively debate that I think in turn deserves a reader poll about the question.  You know the question.

Comments are welcome, of course.

I’d rather drink turpentine and piss on a brush fire. I ain’t predicting this.

We are good enough to smack anybody around and win one. But you gotta have a break or two at just the right time.

To win a natty takes a lot of luck. Plus for whatever reason it seems like the media, particularly ESPN, has been against Georgia. You have to get to play for a natty to win one and except for one time Georgia has always been denied the opportunity to play for the national championship.

I’m in. This year. Will someone please pass the Kool-Aid.

Man, I want Georgia to win a Natty so very much, but I won’t think it’s gonna happen until the clock hits 0:00 on a UGA lead in the 4th. Until then I’ll remain firmly convinced we’re cursed somehow.

Maybe in 60 years, we’re the Chicago Cubs and Boston red Sox of college football. Tons of resources and fan support, usually inept management and cursed as fuck. But hey even those guys managed to stop tripping over their own dicks eventually so there’s hope right?

Can “as soon as Kirby learns not to take his foot off the gas when he has Bama down” be added as an option?

I voted before Kirby turns 60. My reasoning is that Kirby will not beat Saban. Also, the team this year has too many holes and question marks to win a national title, and I am ok with that. When Richt was let go I wanted a coach who would win the East on a somewhat consistent basis and be in the CFP mix every 4 or 5 years. Kirby has surpassed my expectations early on.

I voted this year. This is the most talented team we’ve had in the last 20/30 years. Even the spots with “holes” are stocked with unproven talent.

I thought about voting that way, because it is the money answer: every choice but ‘not gonna happen’ will also occur before Kirby turns 60. And I think Kirby will beat Saban. He has for two years in a row; he just needs to do it for 60 minutes instead of 58.

They’ll win one eventually. They effectively won it two years ago in my mind, so I’m not sweating it really.

My position as well. Since national champ doesn’t mean best, and really never will, I am loving being in the conversation annually. Winning, and competing, for SEC titles is what I put most emphasis on. UGA is there, was a few times before in the 21st century, breaks and weird things impact what happens around the Top 5 programs every year. I won’t ever be a “MNC or Bust” guy, but wish we could just get one to get rid of the strange folks who live only for that.

Kirby has in a great position, feel we can compete with any one when healthy. I am not going to get drug down by opposing fans looking for something in their past to make them feel better, nor even our own myopic fans who don’t love the sport and only define it by what ESPN says it is. These are fun days to be a CFB fan because UGA has to envy no one, and we are looking forward. Less than 90 days to kickoff, not gonna get distracted from what I expect this coming fall. (There was no option in the poll for “I don’t know, and it doesn’t bother me a bit”.) If this was to be the year for a MNC, I would buy a hat, or tag, proclaiming that; would just enjoy the silence from FU and Bama. etc., fans and look forward to the 2020 season.

I think the answer is … When we beat Bama. Have to clear that hurdle in any NC scenario. No getting around it unless Lady Luck bounces the Tide for us. And to be honest I’d rather be the man by beating the man.

Agree with this, but then Clemson is now Bama’s equal. I voted before Kirby turns 60 in that I don’t think our being in the SEC gives us a clear path until Saban is gone. Plus the curse of Herschel of course.

I’m going to assume the 24 people who voted ‘Not gonna happen’ are techies and gator trolls.

Sure do wanna win one, but also a bit anxious about “where would we go from there?” Much of the fun is in the anticipation after suffering such a long drought. Once we get that next one, then we live under the pressure that UA and Clemson are under: namely, to repeat and repeat. Again and again. Never been there as a fan. The closest to it was early ’80s teams. But it conceivably might be less than fun.

Kirby will win a MNC, just give him time. Saban can’t last forever, and, one of these days, HIS luck will run out. What did the previous favorite coach do in fifteen years, not even get us in to the playoffs. Kirby did that the second year.

    Here is my doomsday prediction/scenario
    – Dawgs and bama are undefeated in sec championship = we finally smoke their ass for 60 minutes
    – play clemson in first round cfp and beat them
    – only to get to play bama again and the second time isn’t a charm

Who am I kidding, we will beat them again to become the master of disaster and the king of sting of the sec

Or be down by 2 with :03 seconds left as Hot Rod drills a 57 yarder to win the game…. but then the zebras blow the whistle and say that Bama called a timeout before the snap, so he has to kick it again, makes it again, but then they throw a flag and say illegal formation that we had too many men in the backfield, back us up 5 yards and the 3rd one gets blocked. That sounds about right.

Sadly I could see something like that happening. Between the opposing team, refs and the football gods in general, we have 3 opponents that have to be overcome every game. Apparently somewhere in the past, someone must have drank Jobu’s rum and we have not sufficiently appeased him.

My vote is THIS year. Fromm is a thoroughbred. If Kirby loosens up on the reins we will score at will. We won’t have a competitive game till the SECCG.
