He’s got your tempo right here.

From Michigan’s defensive coordinator, this is one of my favorite quotes of the offseason.

Indeed.

They didn’t hit ANY Ohio State players in the Tonsils last year.

I wonder why no one can get their guy to play the zone read like Jarvis Jones. No one played the zone read better than he did. Didn’t matter who had the ball, they were going down.

Looked to me like he aimed for the outside shoulder of the back and played the back with his left arm and the qb with his right. There was no right answer for the qb. He was always wrong.

Why can’t unblocked edge guys just attack that seam? Must be much much harder to do than JJ made it appear.

For what it’s worth, that’s the way we were taught to play the option in the ’70s, when it seemed like everybody ran the option. If the QB was gonna pretend to be a runner, treat him like a ball-carrier EVERY PLAY and knock his dick into his watchpocket. He’d start pitching earlier and earlier, and by the second quarter you’d have your first fumble recovery.

They taught it then the same way they do now (keying on QB)….contain, contain, contain….then commit (OLB or DE). No difference now, the player just has to have discipline & not commit too early. You commit too early, things break down.

Yes, Don Brown is basically Joe Lee Dunn…if Joe Lee Dunn went to Michigan and played a bunch of crappy offenses. While OSU was not the first time his aggressive and fundamentally unsound defenses have been torched (see FSU 2016, PSU 2017), I think the blueprint is out there for better teams to follow. Michigan’s defenses are a fraud, and they are not particularly physical.

The way to play the option is to hit the QB on every play. Period.
