Threading the needle

So, reading this hot seat assessment of Gus Malzahn,

It goes without saying that to take the job on the Plains means you’re under scrutiny from the moment you coach your first game. Malzahn knows this all too well, having received a seven-year, $49 million contract last offseason only to be put on the hot seat a few months later after dropping a few games. While Tigers fans are debating whether or not the coach can fix the offense to be more consistent, it’s worth filing away the fact that Malzahn enters 2019 coaching under and AD who didn’t hire him and without his biggest supporter in the recently resigned school president.

… I have to ask, where’s the sweet spot between a season so bad he gets fired and so good it sucks from a Georgia fan’s perspective?

I agree it is better for Georgia for Malzahn to stay. If he left the Barn might hire someone like Urban Meyer (not that he would take that job) or a young up and coming HC (like Kirby) who develops into another Nick Saban. No, it is better for Georgia for Auburn to have Malzahn, a coach who wins just enough to keep his job but who is not really a threat—9 games or so per year.

I agree 9 wins would keep him employed. But I just don’t see it happening this year. 7 wins and he is fired.

A win over Alabama keeps his job regardless of record.

    I see 8-4/9-3.

The Googe is back…the guy who signed off on Gus’ hiring in the first place. So Gus stays at 9-3 (or 8-4 if one of his wins is over Alabama or Georgia).

May Gus have a long and mediocre career at Auburn.

Just do us all a favor and beat Bama. Throw in Florida for good measure.

9-4 or 10-3 with decisive losses to UGA, Bama and LSU and a more of the mediocre O. Win count maybe enough to decline to pay the onerous payout, while O weak enough that they continue to struggle to recruit talent on O.

A 9–3 regular season, with the three losses at the hands of LSU, UGA, and Bama, would be quite satisfying. Too good a record to fire Gus but not good enough to get anyone the least bit excited.

He has the defensive to win 8 this year. I think his DL is superior to ours. If he gets some decent offensive production he could win 9 or maybe 10 this year. As long as he doesn’t beat us it’s all good. It used to mean more to us to beat them because we had so many head to head recruiting battles with them. That is just not the case anymore. I am looking forward to seeing their D-Line body slam UF’s Franks a a half a dozen times.

Their DLine is considered really good because of Brown, without him they are pretty average for an SEC defensive front. If Brown starts “saving himself”, or decides to sit out once they are eliminated from contention, they could get slammed late in the year. I don’t know why he came back (I usually like that in college players) but I don’t see him risking himself for a team/coach going no where, and a fan base that is screaming for blood.

I don’t think they are better on defense, but they are closer on defense than they are to our offense. Given their schedule, I say 8-4 or 7-5. Will be a lot of unhappy fans on The Plains, couldn’t happen to a bigger bunch of jerks. I don’t know if that keeps Malzahn or not, doesn’t matter because he is not a great threat, over his head, imo. I do know that was one stupid contract offer last season, nothing indicated he was a keeper, why pay big money to protect him? Let him go to Arky and it would be easy to do better for much fewer dollars.; now they will probably have to pay the buyout money. Dumb, really dumb.

1-11 with a win over Florida (FTMF).

Auburn’s not firing him with that much $ left on the deal.

Beat LSU, Beat Bama, lose to us. Hell, just beating Bama buys him 3 years off the hot seat…

10-2 with losses to us and LSU and their win over Bama knocks Bama out of the SEC championship after Bama has a freak loss to LSU earlier in the season. LSU wins the West.

If Gus loses to us and Bama at home this season he’s gone, even with a 10-2 record.
