You’ll be pleased to know Jake Fromm is doing what he can this summer.
As was reported by Dawgs247’s Rusty Mansell, Fromm has spent extra time this summer working with Georgia’s inexperienced receivers, especially George Pickens and Dominick Blaylock. The veteran quarterback questions the youngsters on whether they know plays and formations, and challenges them when they don’t because the junior triggerman understands that without several of his go-to guys, the two freshmen will have to step into larger roles than they may have expected when they signed.
How much those two can contribute in the opener and then how much they grow over the course of the season is one of the more important keys for 2019, considering how many receivers Georgia likes to deploy in a game.

Agree, hope we re both right. I actually prefer having several good options over one megastar that defenses can focus on. We have had several options like that forever except for when AJ Greene was in Athens. I think we are like that now, but with much better talent, perhaps as much as we have ever had at one time. Recognize the lack of prior production numbers but we just lost several strong receivers that limited this group’s playing time; doesn’t mean they weren’t capable last year, just didn’t get their chance. I worry less about inexperienced receivers less than at positions like CB, ILB, and QB. Think we will be very successful on offense in 2019, including solid numbers from receivers.

I hope they can block because it doesn’t matter how talented you are. Kirby isn’t going to play guys who can’t or won’t block on the edge.

Yep. I wish it was just knowing the plays and routes. DRob and his 50 freshman receptions found that out when he got here. IMO, Kirby needs to find a happy median between crushing blocker and game breaking receiver. We have plenty of the former, not enough of the latter.

I think with D-Rob it may have been more than that. I saw something a few days earlier (can’t remember where) that discussed his route running. At Cal it was just blow by the defender and Davis Webb would chunk it as far as he could or a little swing pass and let him have at it. He way over matched most of the PAC 12 opposition with pure speed. Against SEC DB’s that did not work so well. Maybe it was the blocking but this may have also factored in it.

My thought exactly. Go back and look at a Swift highlight reel from last season. He got some serious downfield blocking from JJ and others.

I think coming off the bye week for UF those guys will be ready. I have read on numerous occasions both guys are extremely hard workers.
Get Drob, Simmons, Landers, Jackson, Blount going early, have Pickens, Blaylock, Bush, and Cager ready by Jax and the sky is the limit. Big bodied receivers and a couple of guys that can stretch a defense. If those guys click this year with Fromm I think we see a increase in PA during the November/October stretch. Group could be special.

I live in Bham and have watched Pickens for the past 3 years at the 7A level, and the kid has dominated defenses. It’s not just making outstanding catches and outrunning everybody. Pickens is a big, physical wr who out-muscles smaller db’s, wins almost every jump ball, takes pride in blocking downfield, and is faster than most at the position. He has power, speed, and even has some shake for his size. He will play early and often and will have success with Fromm taking him under his wing. Kirby will just need to keep his head on straight and keep him somewhat humble.

I know Kirby won’t brag on himself for pulling a 5* kid out of possibly the Crimson’iest of neighborhoods in the SEC, but kudos to our coach. May we use Pickens early and often for 3 or 4 years just to turn the screws.

Back when Haselwood was committed to the good guys I remember watching this film and wondering why he was ranked higher. Pickens to me appears bigger and smoother, and it doesn’t look like he gives up much to JH in top end speed. Either way I am happy we have him.

If Zeus is healthy i wonder if we don’t see us revert to 2017 when we were protecting Fromm as a freshman – run, run, run and only pass when we absolutely have to. I don’t like that approach as i’d Rather hone the passing game as we go along, but i could see that being smart’s approach. Lean on the OL and the RBs as long as he can.
Notwithstanding the other post about our projected win total and our schedule, we can still win 9-10 (or more games) by just lining it up and running it down their throats.

I’d rather (and hope) to see us constantly working to advance the offensive attack on all fronts. Don’t want a repeat of 2017 @Auburn. The scary part of having receivers that need to sync with the QB is the question of whether you keep Fromm in the game with a sizeable lead to work on the passing game. I’m probably kidding myself to think that Kirby would entertain throwing the ball with a sizeable lead, but I really don’t want to be in a situation where we need heavy production from passing combos that haven’t hooked up in a month.

UGA will be a run-first offense, for sure. But, Fromm is just too good to not let him take the offense to another level. He has enough weapons to throw to and will have them ready to go when needed. I won’t be surprised to see Fromm’s PA’s increase substantially.

That has an awful ‘throw-away-season” sound to it. This program is now at a point, with talent and depth, so that holding to a one dimensional offense would be because we can win with it, not because the other dimension sucks. We only lose now because we are outplayed or outcoached, and that happens in the SEC.
I am concerned about the learning curve of the newbie WRs but I’m not ready to concede because of it. The passing game has enough talent now to contribute and compliment the run game until the talented WRs become special.
If Swift and White come unhinged early and often, the passing game portion may be a lot of fun for those involved. I would love for Fromm to enjoy a great year passing.

Jake obviously understands these guys need to be ready early. If you’ve been reading any of the Notre Dame stuff, those guys believe the key to their beating Georgia is stopping the run.

Hasn’t that been the key to beating Georgia since….maybe forever ? I know your comment was probably tongue-in-cheek…..but that really is a testament to our history with RBs and it’s not an exaggeration at all.

WR’s don’t need to apply crushing blocks – just stay between the runner and potential tackler. Give our RB’s a sliver of a lane and they will do the the rest.

I prefer to see our RBs run right over the DBs, a la Swift crushing Chauncey-Gardner-Johnson.

I don’t care how many bye weeks our opponents have. They better bring their A++ game if they are stepping on the field against this Dawgs team.

Teach these big young dudes how to effectively run the 15-yd. out and the fade and all will fall into place. For the first two years of Fromm, it has seemed that those satisfy his needs.
