The coming adventures of “Do More”

It’s possible that the toughest part of Kirby Smart’s coaching job this season is keeping the team from obsessing about facing Alabama again.  It’s a damned long road to the SECCG and plenty can happen along the way if the Dawgs can’t maintain their focus as they slug their way through the first twelve games of the season.

Then again, a certain fixation on the Tide is understandable.

… In 443 minutes of Alabama-verses-Georgia football the last two years, the Bulldogs trailed for less than 90 seconds of them. They’ve out-gained Alabama in yards (819-774) and first downs (45-41), too, and have two Ls to show for it.

As Smart said, “What we’ve shown is we can match their physicality. We’ve got to finish.”

As the header notes, “Do More” is this season’s motto du jour.  Too bad “Finish the Drill” was already taken.

    443 minutes? That seems high…

  2. Kirby, you want to prove you have done more? Don’t get blown out by Auburn. Break the losing streak to west teams. Finish the regular season unbeaten. If we had taken care of business in Baton Rouge, we probably make the CFP regardless.

A strategic loss to either Auburn or TAMU is in the plan. Captures the team’s attention and can possibly hurt Bama’s chances. Almost worked in 2017 which proved to be the better formula. That Kirby is a sly one. 🧐

Sure..he tried it with LSU last year (was there really any other plausible excuse for that game plan?). I mean, who sends Rodrigo on a naked end sweep against one of the best DB’s in the league? Pure throw away game strategy but LSU was never going to knockout Bama. Bad choice. Kirby’s learned that lesson.

Trotting out statistics showing how you “really won the game” is so South Carolina. There is only one statistic that matters, the final score.

Not sure that both aren’t more akin to the NFC championship game. The rams advanced but it was under circumstances that were complete and utter bullshit.

I believe a wise man once said, “You play to win the game.” 😀

Seeing as Georgia was dicked over in the first one, I think it’s fair to say they “really won the game”. Not that that’s the point of the stat. It’s just noting how close Georgia came in the two previous seasons without getting the job done.

I actually think there was more frequent and consequential “dicking” in the second game. Both “dickings” were outcome determinative IMHO.

Smart didn’t trot out those stats, the writer of the article did.

I never said he did. I was talking about all the Georgia fans who trot them out and also blame the refs for the loss(es). Citing superior stats and blaming the refs in losing games is total loser behavior. Kirby has never talked about anything other than not getting it done.

Kirbs needs to take a look in the mirror. You can’t control the refs, but you can control your intensity. Don’t take your foot off the gas!

I watched that show on a plane home from the UK. The episode where he meets the werewolf champion is absolutely hilarious. I won’t spoil it but his choice of weapon and use of it sent me into a laughing fit that attracted the attention of half the plane and two flight attendants.

eethomas, I concur. Anyone and everybody can make excuses. An excuse AND a dollar will get you a cup of coffee. Screw the excuses poor coaching lost both the Ala. games.

Move the SEC front office out of Birmingham and the Director of Officials should not have any role when they are an Alum of an involved school, a replacement should be appointed in those instance at minimum. Bama is still doing the same crap which put the Iron Bowl on hiatus. They are just better at it.

Ideally the Director of Officials shouldn’t be an Alum of a SEC school or in state rival of a SEC School (no GT or Clemson alums).

    • The officiating had a big role in the national championship game. A missed FG was enormous in the SECCG last year.

I have a feeling Saban is nearing the end of his time at Alabama (3-5 years). This is the year for Alabama as well. Tua and a host of other players are gone after this year. Alabama has 12 players expected to go in the top 2 rounds of the 2020 draft. Alabama is the definition of reload but great upperclassman QB’s don’t come along every year. I think Saban would have to explore the transfer market after this year for a QB to make another run next year.

Saban is going to have that team focused, especially after the 44-16 beat down he took from Dabo. I believe we can beat them once in the SEC championship game. If have to face them a second time in the CFP I don’t get the warm and fuzzies.

I don’t like the chances of beating them twice and I don’t UGA’s chances of making the playoff without a SEC title. As such I will be pulling for anyone to beat Bama. In hopes however small they maybe that they will have 2 losses for the playoff selection to consider.

I am also pulling for 3 teams outside the SEC to run the table. I don’t care if it is anOSU. Michigan, Oklahoma, Clemson etc. I’ll take my chances in a winner take all game between UGA and Bama in the SECCG.
