Tommy Tuberville is running to be the great state of Alabama’s United States Senator.
He’s got some baggage, though. He has a hard time with commitment.
Just ask the folks at Ole Miss. Or this kid, “who was in Lubbock for an official visit last weekend, told the recruiting site Wreckem247.com that Tuberville stepped away from a dinner with several recruits and assistant coaches Friday night and never returned” after receiving and accepting an offer to become Cincinnati’s coach. Or Cincinnati, for that matter.
That seems like a target-rich environment for a political competitor. So, if you’re Tubs, and you really don’t want to stick to sports, what’s the winning strategy? Apparently, it’s pandering.
Tuberville returned several times to the theme that a belief in God is essential to fixing what he believes are the nation’s pressing problems. He received applause and an amen or two when he said he believes the Trump presidency was a gift from God.
“I want to help Donald Trump and you get this mess straightened out,” Tuberville said. “And I’m going to do that. But we’ve got to put Jesus and God before everything else. And if we don’t do that we’re going to be brought down to our knees again.”
Maybe that’s why he never won a national title at Auburn.
Get The Picture 
Pandering is certainly a tried and true strategy. I’d say at least 100% of politicians use it. I grant the Senator that it’s still nauseating and mockworthy.

I would say Hillary’s baggage was on full display, Trump had the unknown wildcard going for him. I talked to several people who thought Trump’s pandering to the evangelical Right and hard-line Nationalism was an act that would disappear as soon as he took office and he’d be a business-minded moderate. It was a choice between two smelly bags of garbage, but one had a lotto ticket taped to it.

Meaning, basically, that in one case you can guess via hearsay, personal preferences (“that awful voice”), a few notable missteps (the emails, the fuck up in Benghazi); and in another, you’ve got objective evidence via tweets, video, legal documents, etc. of dictatorial statements and impulses, contradiction and humiliation of those in his own cabinet, use of the office for personal financial gain (corruption), racism in action and statement, sexism in action and statement, many, many rape/sexual assault accusations (several of which have gone to the courts), a legal trail of payoffs and settlements for financial and other abuses, incredible hypocrisy and duplicity on just about everything, a policy of abuse and something very much like concentration camps on the border, & the general sowing of discord and mistrust in government, and each other, among the populace. Because Christians try to point to Paul’s language of Jesus “fulfilling the law” as a reason as a reason that the old testament doesn’t apply anymore (except for the parts that they like). If that was so, the Jesus character would have told everyone, “Hold up, man. Just wait 3 more weeks, then y’all can’t eat bacon after the Romans kill me”. There would be no liturgical point to keeping all those points as they would have been fulfilled. That would make the New Testament a book for 1st Century AD and not a “New and Living Testament”.

Experience, a component of that being culture, drives the way the Bible is read, and the beliefs that flow. It should be that way. Agree with you 100%. However, the perspective I draw from that observation is seemingly different than you.
Maybe, just maybe, the Bible story is a lot more radical and subversive than the narrative set by the people in power. You know, the religious leaders, governments, and empires that Jesus literally gave his life in resistance to? Maybe the real narrative is one of freedom, and not of control. If so, it reasons that it takes outside forces that begin outside the power structures – like the enlightenment, evolution, the civil rights movements, quantum physics, and other scientific and cultural prophets – to disrupt the narrative, and call into question the nature of divinity and how it flows through you and me. It’s a trajectory that begins and evolves across the Bible, but one that continues.
On thread, the Religious Right is has made their deal with Trump and the Republicans, and they deserve everything that they have coming.

I think what started the schools on the wrong path was no longer allowing corporal punishment. I was as much of a smart ass at 10 and 18 as I am now at 58. I learned quickly to act right in school or an ass whipping would follow, with another one or two when I got home. Are Democrats the reason that industries such as railroads and food exports (Baltimore), steam-boating (St. Louis), meat-packing (Chicago), and manufacturing (Detroit, Cleveland, etc.) are no longer as big a share of the US economy? Or could it be that the creative destruction of markets and capitalism can change the fortunes of cities?
For some reason, there seems to be a re-occurring theme where government assistance to lessen some of the economic shocks to urban populations are the worstest, but government farm subsidies and imbalanced federal spending that insulate rural populations from other economic shocks is OK. Wish I could figure out why that is…

I’m not on one team vs. another. Manufacturing subsidies are just as harmful as farming subsidies. If you want to play the red vs blue game, I can find just as much hypocrisy one way vs the other.

Clearly poverty exists in much of the rural south mainly due to generations of youth leaving for urban areas. Reverse that trend and we will be well on our way to solving many other problems facing our country.

I am planning an escape from ITP Atlanta to the GA mountains – a landscape that is more similar to my childhood. But I will miss the HBCUs, Buford Highway, Clarkston, Kosher Kroger, LGBTQ midtown (where has Baton Bob been?) and the overall diversity of Atlanta. What I won’t miss are the Buckhead egos, or the Cobbites, Gwinnetians, and Forsythians clogging up all the traffic. In my 15+ years here, I have experienced a much higher frequency of negative encounters with “people that look like me” than instances of steaming piles or roving mobs on the street.
Homelessness is a problem, and a stain on our national conscience. But do you really think these cities are creating the homeless people? could it be that there are things broken in our systems, both rural and urban, that allows combat vets with PTSD to slip through the cracks, that allows mental illness treatment to be a luxury service for the rich, that allows teen pregnancy and drug addiction to become death sentences for hope? Cities are often the landing spot for the tired, poor, huddled wretched refuse of rural America.

To some extent, cities are displacing people, yes. The real estate price control policies of places like San Francisco and New York City drive prices higher, so that the middle and lower classes struggle to live in these cities.
And certainly cities are magnets for people with other problems. But that’s also thanks for leftist policies. Why should neighbors and family take care of their own when there is are state and federal departments of problem solving with teams of bureaucrats using tax dollars to take care of them for us?

I’m not advocating one way or the other in the above. But the data does seem to suggest that most of the South would be even worse off economically under such a scenario. I don’t believe it would be worse off. Keeping tax dollars local, or even (perish the thought) eliminating them altogether, wouldn’t just result in nothing happening. It would lead to investment and growth.
And even if it didn’t, I don’t see the point in arguing about how much of one’s neighbor’s money one is allowed to steal. It’s just bad.
Of course, without the money, the power would also go. If California weren’t sending money to Mississippi, California wouldn’t be as effective at influencing policy in Mississippi, either. So leftists should be careful what they wish for.

Lot of homeless people with most being in sunny states. That applies to the Southeastern sunny states as well, but a more friendly temp and humidity is found in Southern California. Without a home, most people exposed to outside temperatures day and night will choose these areas, not because there is bad about those cities, but rather what is good about them.
Bubonic plague is endemic to the US, mostly in Navaho country where the flea carriers call prairie dogs “home”. An occasional case can be found in Navaho youngsters who play near those areas sometimes. Most physicians in that area are familiar with the occasional diagnosis and type of antibiotic needed to treat it. Yersinia pestis, the scientific name for the causative organism of bubonic plague (formerly known as Pasteurella pestis), can be found in the sylvan animals of California’s Central Valley and have been known to be there since the 1950s-60s. They also were introduced into a few port cities in Texas by an occasional soldier returning from Vietnam during the 60s and were found later to reside benignly in the throats of some Vietnamese in Vietnam. The idea that bubonic plague could cause disease for the homeless in the Southern California environment is not new, nor is it a reflection of filth because the sylvan animals aren’t associated with that environment where they thrive carrying carrier fleas for over 70yrs. Rats certainly can carry fleas that carry bubonic, but that is a factor of natural spreading from other areas. Cities in So Ca have been alert for this to happen for some time.
There are plenty of drugs that can stop the disease in it’s tracks, no sweat (Streptomycin used to be the drug of choice because it didn’t rupture the microbes all at once, whereas, other antibiotics killed them all at once causing released large doses of endotoxin, which can kill), and the chance of an outbreak mediated by the homeless population is only slightly higher than that of the general population. It makes better headlines for Fox and Friends to get the public aroused about the natural happenstance of disease organisms and revulsion of the homeless, much as the Germans were taught to look down on and classify the undesirables as “slovaks” that were inherently dirty and nasty….well, you get the point.
This info about bubonic plague is from memory of an interview I had at the Atlanta CDC with the world’s expert of that microorganism and was used to supplement published knowledge gleaned for my presentation in a seminar group at UGA. Why did I write this tome? So that you may end your day with a little scientific knowledge,that, in the end, should make you feel secure when armed with scientific truth to make informed decisions when you blog with another Dawg instead of listening to that drivel coming from the tube in an attempt to arouse fear and revulsion towards the homeless.

I don’t like filth or disease, and I really hate that the city government in LA and SF have done a horrible job of making conditions worse for the homeless.
