Your 8.7.19 Playpen

So, a couple of weeks ago, Andy Staples delved into a serious philosophical issue.

I’m pretty much with Andy on that, although I grudgingly suppose others mileage may vary.

Then came this wrinkle.

I had to object.

    1) Popeyes is overrated
    2) Publix >>>>>>>>>>>Kroger. In fact, Publix fried bird and tenders are the best in the chain biz.

Bell’s has lots of “stick to your ribs” food with straight out of the seventies, original decor and prices. Try the fried chicken with potatoes, gravy and fried okra with sweet tea and you’ll get out of there for less than $7.

I had it once many moons ago, and don’t remember anything standing out about it, but locals rave about it. I need to give it another shot, but I’d like for my Georgia peeps to give it the Ol’ Pepsi challenge.

The atom bombs were mistakes and accomplished nothing other than the unnecessary deaths of 120K+ civilians. We had approached the Japanese leadership to surrender. They wanted to keep the emperor but we told them no. We dropped the bombs and told them told them they could keep the emperor if they surrendered. Truman never explained his reasons for dropping the bombs. His administration later made up stuff about the Japanese preparing to fight to the death after a (unnecessary) invasion to save face. Bull Halsey, known for his hatred of the Japanese during the war, said it was a mistake. As did Eisenhower and MacArthur- 2 Republicans. I feel no need to defend the actions of a Democrat like Truman

This is not true. The Japanese were not willing to surrender. Dropping the atom bombs saved not only over a million allied dead, they saved over 5M Japanese civilian dead, if not double that number. It also saved the Japanese from becoming a bifurcated people, with the northern Japanese islands under control of communist Russia, and prevented what would’ve definitely become WWIII over control of the Japanese islands.

      So… ya wrong.

All the evidence is the govt was looking for a way out that allowed them to keep the emperor. Their navy and merchant fleet were gone. Most of their cities were in ruin. We could also have chosen a military target instead of a city like Hiroshima. As for Russian invasion, I understand that they had no intention of going beyond the Kurile islands. The stuff about 5M civilians and 1M being saved is Truman admin propaganda. Note, you’re not just saying I’m wrong but Halsey and MaxArthur who fought them along with Eisenhower

dawgxian they got to keep the emperor but had to admit that he wasn’t a direct descendant of god. Surprisingly, this was a shock to the general population of Japan. In my opinion, using the A-bombs was justified. Not that doing so didn’t have a lot of negative ramifications. However, we were engaged in the second WORLD war in twenty years. That’s hard to grasp for a generation like ours that’s never experienced anything other than regional conflicts in faraway places. The total death toll worldwide, civilian and military was probably around 50 million. Don’t forget Japan invaded China and the Germans were deep in Russia as well. A lot was going on that is easily overlooked here in America.

As far as chains go: Popeyes for bone-in, Zax for fingers, Chick-fil-A for nuggets
My preferred method for wings that I don’t see chains wanting to get into is the smoke-then-fry. Smoke the wings until they’re almost up to chicken temp (155-160F) then put them in a really hot fryer (350-375F) for 1.5-2 minutes to crisp up the skin. If the skin is crispy and you smoked long enough for the rub to really tack on, then you can sauce them without any problem too.
Bites like a deep-fried wing and finishes like smoked bbq chicken.

Woth it IMO. I love it and use it regularly. My favorite two things to use it for are steaks and fish. It cooks both perfectly to however you prefer it and then you just finish to get your tasty exterior – grill, cast iron, whatever your preferred method is. Takes all of the guess work out of it. I’ve cooked a couple of ribeye caps (spinalis) using it recently and GD was it tasty. I prefer smoking pork shoulders, but I’ve used it occasionally for one of those when I’m going to be out and about and won’t have time to tend to the BGE every so often. Rub it down, put it in the cooker, and then whenever I’m a couple hours away from serving, toss it on the BGE with some smoke and try to get your bark there.

I’m telling you this works so well. I’ve tried smoking them at higher temps to keep the skin crispy, I’ve gone really low and slow with them hoping the skin would cook through eventually. Frying for just 2 minutes fixes it all and since the smoke gets into the meat, frying the skin doesn’t mess up all of your smoke flavor.

I must have been in a timewarp yesterday because I totally forgot about the playpen. But I’m glad to see someone mention Zaxby’s. I used to work at one in Athens. There’s been one in Waycross now for several years and I always make a trip there when I’m back home visiting my family.

A few things I remember most about working at that Zaxby’s:
      1. The time I got food poisoning from eating some undercooked chicken. My first time ever having food poisoning. Spewing from both ends for 24 hours and thought I was going to die.
      2. People would always call in orders to the Zaxby’s on Atlanta Highway then mistakenly show up to our location (W Broad St). Sometimes they’d leave to go to the right store, other times we’d have to fry up an order of 50+ wings or tenders or whatever.
      3. The Sunday afternoon “church crowd” was the worst. All elderly people, they’d come in and move the tables around so they could all sit together. Then when they left they wouldn’t put any of the tables back, and they’d invariably leave a mess worse than any of the drunkards who came through the night before. And every single week they’d grumble about having to pay a quarter for a cup if they’re just drinking water.

      Ah, memories.

As I’m driving and she’s eating, I watched her peel the skin off the thigh. Thinking she was about to eat it in one bite (like I would have), I nearly wrecked the car when she flung it out the window because of “too much grease”. She was pretty hot, though, so I got over that infraction after explaining to her she should just give it to me in the future.

Champys and Canes are the best. Period.
Popeyes holds its own but I’ve noticed varies based on location.
CFA is all around solid but I find that I’m more attracted to the service, the drinks, and the sauces than the chicken itself (that being said, nothing beats a CFA chicken biscuit in the AM on the way to a game; it just feels right)
Zaxbys is oversalted trash and I think less of my friends who tout it as anything worth writing home about.
I eat Kroger chicken probably once every other weekend and like it more than CFA and Zaxbys if I had to choose. Publix isn’t bad by any means but they pepper the hell out of their chicken.

Canes chicken fingers are better than Zaxby’s but there are more Zaxby’s so I end up eating it more often.

Zaxby’s SHOULD be given credit for making a great advancement in chicken consumption by offering the combo meal of chicken fingers AND chicken wings. A greater “fusion” achievement, IMHO, than all the lame Asian fusion places that have overrun shopping centers.

In a tiny building with no seating in a not so great area of town is a Church’s. Not too salty, not too spicy, usually not too greasy, toss in some pickled jalapenos and Church’s is just as good as any of them.

Wrong boys! I was serving my country when yall were a gleam in your daddy’s eye. Before that I was Capt of my Rifle Team into college and grew up with all sorts of artillery in rural Sowega. I’ve busted more caps than you can possibly conjure up, fired most weapons including machine gun (30 and 50 cal), BAR, grease gun and other assorted weapons that have to be mounted on a platform (tank or Army Jeep) including the 105 Recoilless Rifle (at Ft Benning, !961) that had a side-by-side 50 cal machine gun used to place a 50 cal bullet through a tank turret before hitting the 105 button that sent the shell on the path of the last 50 cal bullet .

When I use the words “assault rifle” (or weapon) it means that it was built for troops to use in assaulting a position during war (using individual soldiers with automatic weapons and large magazines to spray, not aim, without having to carry a heavy machine gun). It has no place in a civilian’s hands and it was never meant to be a part of a Second Amendment that was provided in a day when such weapons weren’t even invented for war, much less available to idiots who don’t know weaponry and that can be used on you and yours.

I’m fearful that you yahoos don’t know what an assault weapon is and you certainly don’t know that has no place in a home(unless you conjure up a foreign invasion where you live).

The should be outlawed. Civilians are rightly not allowed to purchase selective fire or automatic weapons, or through means of tampering, create an automatic weapon from a semi-automatic firearm.

Bump stocks seek to accomplish this through the second, though tried to get around the law by making it so the change was accomplished through an attachment and not mechanical tampering.

There’s letter of the law and spirit of the law, and bump stocks were in clear violation of the spirit of the law. Trump was right to outlaw them.

Cojones. I’ve been an outdoorsman my whole life. Firearms are a large part of that and IMO a necessity for rural/ agricultural living. I also think a responsible, vetted person should be able to own suitable firearms for sport, subsistence, or personal defense. Having said that, I bought an AR legally several years ago. It’s fitted with a very high quality optic and is arguably the finest all around firearm I have ever used, and I’ve used plenty.
The thing is, you’re right. It’s a killing machine. That’s what it was made for. I agree with you. These have no place in civilian hands. There is no militia in the United States anymore. You’re not going to fight the government with your AR. You don’t need it to enjoy shooting sports and it is not really suited to home defense. But the Genie is out of the bottle, there are tens of thousands out there. I’m open to suggestions for getting rid of them. What’s a good plan?

It’s outdoorsmen like you and I, having respect for nature when hunting and are sporting with firearms that have to be at the forefront of stopping this madness.

Make it difficult, if not impossible for the mentally infirmed and troubled people of this world to possess them. The facile arguments made by some that these people can steal the weapons is not a reason to not place laws that prevent the further erosion of our society.
Change the laws for possession of assault weapons to one of registration as a souvenir weapon as is now legislated with restrictions on a souvenir weapon’s use only at a target range that protect the rest of us from someone getting the weapon and using it on others. Include security measures taken with that weapon that demonstrates that security (removal of firing pin, trigger lock, in a safe, etc) is in place for you to be able to vouch for it’s responsible use in your hands.
There are as many measures available as there are responsible people who wish to own such a weapon, we only have to marshal that reasoning forward by those who wish to be responsible, as most hunters are.

Assault weapons are not play things from a cowboy movie or war movie that some project themselves bravely into with reasoning that they can kill other people they dislike if only they can get their hands on it. Responsible people can, through reasoning with their neighbor and representative (elect someone at the grassroots level who has a reasonable plan going forward), but throwing up our hands and wishing it or calling those trying to change such madness as “simplistic, romantic”, or other weak-thinking epithets will not change a thing.

If some madman/weak-thought-process individual opens fire on you and yours in Sanford Stadium , what would your reaction be then? Would that have to take place before you would entertain fixing this stupid shit before it consumes us all? I can prove to you that you are not now protected there or in any large gathering of souls to the possibility of being gunned down. The first proof would be a demonstration that I can get to a rooftop looking down on Sanford. The second proof would be using a drone as a gun platform. Have any of you seen the video put out several years ago where a person strapped a 45 pistol on one and successfully demonstrated emptying the clip? Auxiliary legislation to gun possession would have to be used to lesson the chances for multiple shooting deaths at one event, much of it already being in place to prevent that from happening to our representatives in Washington. Wouldn’t you like some of the same rules in place to protect your families?.

No one who knows anything about firearms calls a magazine a “clip.”** I can’t take anything you say seriously unless you can explain to me how magazine capacity affects the effective rate of fire of a firearm. Here’s a hint: It doesn’t affect the effective rate of fire at all. Not even a little bit.

**the usage of the word clip refers to metal clips that held seven rounds together that would be inserted into an M-1’s internal magazine. The ejecting clip would provide the distinctive “ping” sound when the soldier / Marine would run out rounds.

Magazine capacity greatly affects overall rate of fire you have 3 10 round magazines and one 30 round. Which fires 30 rounds first by the average person. If it fires one per second does no change rate of fire but that was not my point

All semi automatic weapons have the same effective rate of fire regardless of the amount of rounds in the magazine. That means all semi automatic weapons fire the same number rounds in a minute as all semi automatic weapons. Be they pistols, carbines, or rifles, it doesn’t matter.

A 30 round magazine does not help you fire more rounds in a minute than a 10 round magazine. Magazine volume literally has nothing to do with what you say you want.

My brain literally hurts speaking with dumb people who think they know what they’re talking about who don’t. A semi automatic firearm typically has a 45 round effective rate of fire per minute, Wedflatrock. The volume of a magazine does not change this.

My 10 round S&W M&Pc .40 has the same effective rate of fire as an AR-15 carbine or rifle with a 30 round magazine. If you have less rounds in a magazine than you want, you simply carry more magazines. You’d be surprised how quickly someone can become proficient in dropping a spent mag and inserting a new one, back to condition one ready to rock and roll.

Don’t play firearm word salad with people who don’t know what they’re talking about; it’d A losing game.

No one can purchase an assault rifle. They are selective fire weapons and illegal for civilian purchase. The term “assault weapon” is a politically motivated phrase that in no way describes what a firearm is or does, which is almost always used to describe a firearm that “looks scary,” like an AR-15. It’s also been used as a marketing term by Colt or Armalite and other manufacturers.

Any weapon used to commit assault, whether it’s a firearm, a knife, or a baseball bat fits the definition of “assault weapon.”

You’re the one playing firearm word salad. Assault rifle is a class of firearms originally made to selectively fire that combine the high power and range of a rifle with the compact handling of the sub-machine gun while splitting the difference in ammo capacity. You’re being deliberately obtuse if you insist there’s no functional difference between an AR-15 and an ordinary hunting rifle. Now I understand it’s difficult to legally define what is and is not considered an assault rifle, but don’t act like they don’t exist as a class of weapons.

You could be fried or your family could be fried or injured horribly for the rest of their lives with such a weapon, but for some idiotic reasoning , it can be conjured that that won’t happen. Bullshit, it’s happening now where lasers can blind pilots with many lives on board their plane and is being perfected for use on the battlefield by the individual soldier.

This thinking that assault weapons fill some use in a home or for hunting is insane.

Both parties have control in branches of the government right now. I am cynical enough to believe both sides will f it up and nothing will get accomplished even if they pass ‘meaningful’ legislation. I would applaud an honest effort.

Since you are a hardcore D and Trump hater, where was Obama during all the mass shootings? He couldn’t bring the D Senate and R house together (like Trump will do)? Why couldn’t the D’s just write the legislation they wanted when they had a Supermajority in Obama’s first 2 years? Mass shootings happened then too. It defeats your purpose to blindly blame Trump and Republicans. You have some good ideas in threads below but you are too partisan to be taken seriously.

Trump’s words today reflect what he means by “coming together”. He said that getting rid of assault weapons was not politically viable and was off the table. His coming togetherness means more of the “hearts and flowers” rhetoric he has used in the near past shootings, not something solid that will curtail the problem, but insincere words used to mollify the disturbed populace.

Yes, I’m a Trump hater since before he was elected because he demonstrated before the fact that he was immoral and possibly amoral. He is not for the welfare of our country nor the people. He is concerned only with profiting on our country before he is out of office. The evidence for that stretches from Russia to the western lands of the U.S that he signs away every day and that belongs to we, the people. He has no patriotism or redeeming qualities to speak from since he avoided military service on several occasions at the same time that my brothers and I served our country. One brother is retired career military having served two tours in ‘Nam, as a spotter pilot during the uprising in the Dominican Republic and in the firezone of the 38th parallel when it was a hot spot. This doesn’t prove anything about my background except to ask “Who in hell gave this person the right to set himself above taking the same chances for his country that me and my brothers did (my oldest brother, deceased, was in the AF when the Korean war had just begun)? You must not think much of those now defending our country if you let that unpatriotic asshole get a pass on bonespurs (I was diagnosed the same with a bonespur in my heel when examined for active duty) and still believe he would defend our country with his life like all in the military are exposed. Trump doesn’t think he is subject to the same laws that you and I are even if he breaks them. Yeah, I don’t like him.

Everyone knows the difference of paying a doctor to use a flimsy excuse to prevent going into service versus those who weren’t drafted at all. While my brothers and I went into service on a volunteer basis, our father was never in the service, but that has nothing to do with his being drafted and showing disdain for putting his life on the line while he thought that others should go in his place.

Trump is a draft dodger. Other draft dodgers who were called had a problem with their govt and moved out of country to avoid draft, but Trump paid to stay in the comfort of his home and country, protected and afraid. What a worthless wuss!

Trump was a rich kid. And like many other rich and connected kids of all political persuasions, he got out of being sent to the front lines. Some, like Bush, went into the National Guard. Some, like Clinton, got student deferments, tried to get into the reserves, and gamed the ROTC system by joining, but never entering, in order to avoid the draft. Whatever. I don’t blame people for not wanting to go to war.

Personally, it amuses me that people think you can measure your dick by whether you were in the military in a far off land shooting at people who posed absolutely no threat to the USA.

Paranoia will just get you more killings. You have been brainwashed into thinking you need such armaments to defend your home in America. A pistol is short and can be wielded much quicker to rid yourself of your “home invaders” than an assault weapon unless, of course, you wish to keep it near your bedside (it doesn’t fit into a gun safe under the bed). Using an assault weapon with a long barrel to catch on doors or furniture when running isn’t your best bet against a home invader.

But I know your “Pry it from my cold dead hands” bullshit “philosophy” mind won’t comprehend these instructions for best protecting your family, but I write for you anyway.

Btw, a movement has been started by veterans who have had to use these weapons protectively while in the service is underway to try to convince you military wannabes that veterans don’t need them in their homes so why should you – unless you are one of the sickos. This is the “looks scary” argument. We can only live in a world in which things are what they actually are. One is a selective fire rifle with a much higher effective rate of fire and the other is a semi automatic rifle, which has the same effective rate of fire as every other single semi automatic rifle, even ones that don’t “look scary.”

An M16 or M4 are selective fire firearms. This one difference makes them completely different weapons, BY DEFINITION, than an AR-15.

There is no difference in an AR-15’s effective rate of fire than compared to any other semi automatic rifle on the market; even the ones that don’t “look scary,” like a Remington 7400.

Effective rate of fire is the only thing that matters. Say it with me: Effective rate of fire.

Magazine capacity doesn’t matter. The size or velocity of the round doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is effective rate of fire.

Closely related doesn’t mean the same weapon. It’s like saying a military Humvee is the same as a civilian Humvee. They’re not. They’re closely related, but one is for military use and one is for civilian use.

One advantage a long rifle has over a pistol is accuracy. It’s fairly common even for trained military and police to shoot 5, 10, or 15 pistol rounds at a person and hit … nothing.

You don’t need a rifle in the close range of a house. You demonstrate that you have no idea of weaponry nor how to use it. A rifle is used for long range and a pistol is used in close.

Educate yourself to this by reading of the Moros in the Philippines and the invention of the 45cal used by the military for quick action to blow them out of a tent before they could swing a machete in a drugged state. No time to grab a rifle, point and shoot. When I was in the military, handguns were only issued to Officers and special duty personnel assigned when payroll was done by cash to enlisted men. When I saw my jeep driver firing beside me when I qualified for payroll disbursement to my men, I asked him what the hell he was doing since he was a CO (Conscientious Objector). His reply was: “Because, Lieutenant, I’m required to if I’m driving you to pick up payroll and the bad guys don’t know that I won’t use it. By becoming familiar with this weapon, I can load and pass the clips and loaded weapons as fast as you can shoot.” And he was a CO serving his country the best way he knew how, unlike Ole Bonespur who couldn’t face a bullet for his country.

It’s an AR, AHD, a much better platform than the AK. And I’ll not be destroying it anytime soon. What is more likely to happen is it will be taken away from me under threat of incarceration at some point due to others that are already out there being misused (What an understatement). If you own one the same will happen to you. Since mine was purchased legally and there is a record of it it won’t be a problem to find. I could hide it, report it stolen, etc. to keep it but once they are banned even possession becomes a crime. But rest assured, there will be enough that aren’t confiscated to remain a threat.
You’re dead on, Humans are very creative in methods of of exterminating large numbers of other people. The examples of mass homicide you give were either state sponsored or condoned and the platforms Cojones and I are talking about were designed and used by governments as instruments of war. Because of the design and it’s effectiveness a weapon of this type has the ability to kill and injure on a much greater scale than Grandpa’s deer rifle, the shotgun you keep behind the door, or the Glock in your glove compartment. Why allow one person the the ability to affect or end the lives of so many so easily? That’s the issue I have with the general population having access to a battle rifle with little or no screening or training.

It’s a good thing civilians don’t have access to a high rate of fire “battle rifle” (I think the term you’re looking for is assault rifle, which denotes a selective fire rifle made specifically for military use), Got Cowdog, isn’t it?

You keep repeating the lies, I’ll keep batting them down.

The AR-15 is a semi automatic rifle with the exact same EFFECTIVE RATE OF FIRE as any other semi automatic rifle available on the civilian market. It is not an assault rifle. It is not made for military use. It looks like a military weapon for marketing purposes, but there is absolutely no difference between an AR-15 and a Remington 7400 or 750 in its effectiveness to put rounds down range. The only difference between them is cosmetic, and again, that’s for marketing purposes.

No, I called it a battle rifle for a reason. Am I lying when I say that the AR-15 has the same capability as an M-16 to send the contents of it’s magazine downrange in semi-automatic mode?
I understand your “effective rate of fire” better than you apparently give me credit for. I also know that in 30 seconds you can put significantly more rounds on target with an AR-15 than you can the Remington you mention. Bring your paycheck and your 7400 to the range and we’ll talk.
Anyway, I get your point about select fire rifles already being illegal to own without proper licensing. You continue to throw out the “Looks scary” argument. I would say they all look scary when pointed at you. What I’m driving at is that some weapons have a great deal more destructive capacity than others and should be more carefully controlled.

Paps was built and owned by a friend of mine and classmate, Jim Andrews. I attended Jim’s funeral 10 yrs ago (he is buried in the Sylvester Cemetery) and his son probably took over management. Jim was a great fellow and athlete, would literally give you the shirt off his back and was loved by many people. He was one of the first people I looked up at his place of business when moving back to the region from Ca. He was insistent that he give my wife and I a big bag of his chicken and I agree that it was great.

Jim also owned Kitty’s Swap Meet in the pecan orchard across from the tire manufacturer in East Albany. He came from a great farming family and his two brothers were the same class of my older brother and the oldest was in my sister’s class, later marrying my sister’s best friend. You struck an old memory chord.

My brother (retired near Sylvester) gets his BBQ and Brunswick stew from Fat Boy’s and it’s the best. We look forward to sharing some with them when we visit.

For home protection I have a 12 ga loaded with #6 shot. At close range the pellets are densely packed and will blow a nice big hole in a bad guy. However, as they begin to spread each pellet is not carrying much energy and will not penetrate the interior wall of a home. So stray shots will not kill your family members hiding in other rooms. If you start pounding away with an AR 15, the high velocity rounds will go through walls like they were tissue paper. They will also penetrate exterior wall and possibly kill a neighbor. Definitely bad form. Just something to keep in mind.

Also consider making the first round, a less lethal round. Just in case that noise you heard downstairs is your son or daughter sneaking back into the house.

A 5.56 won’t go through 2 layers of sheet rock? Bullshit. Of course a 9 will also penetrate the wall. I wasn’t comparing an AR 15 to a 9mm pistol, I was comparing it to a shotgun loaded with #6 shot. I’m not putting down an AR 15, I own 3 of them and love shooting them. Just saying #6 shot is safer inside your house.

I think you’re right. Anything that will go through clothing, flesh, and bone will go through walls. And vice versa. So #6 is both safer for your walls (and any family behind them), but it’s also safer for intruders. It’s more likely to wound than kill.

But my choice is closer to you. I have a .410 in my closet with defensive rounds that should be adequate. I figure it’s a happy medium between a rifle and a medium caliber handgun. And my wife (and even my preteen daughter) can handle it without any problems.

As scattered as they were I enjoyed yesterday’s discussions. I left work a little early and went to visit my Father on the farm. I ran a few rounds through the AR, had a couple of beers on the tailgate with Pop, and stopped by Kroger on the way home for some chicken. At home, I watched a documentary on the bomb, and read a couple of chapters of “Killing the Rising Sun”. Here are my takeaways:

The AR will penetrate two sheets of 5/8 OSB at 300 meters. Resting on the hood of the truck I was able to put 10 rounds on a six inch circle in 7.53 seconds at that range. I cannot do that with my hunting rife. I do not recommend firing an AR-15 inside of or at a house. Or another person. Just sayin’….

Kroger fried chicken hits the spot if you’ve been talking about it all day and are hungry. Is it the best? I can’t say. It’s pretty damn good, though.

8/6 was the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. I’m guessing that’s how the topic came up. By the time the bomb was ready, Japan was beaten. They knew it and we knew it. We could have isolated the country with a blockade and starved them into submission, but how many more would have starved to death than were killed in the two bombings? An invasion would have cost American lives, regardless of how many. Was nuking Japan the best option? Probably. Would I have made that choice? Thank (insert your deity here) I did not have to.

Best thing? I’m glad my Dad is still around to drink beers on the tailgate and shoot the shit about rifles, cows, tractors, and football. His prediction is UGA runs the table this year and takes the whole thing. I am down with that.
