Florida coach Dan Mullen on Monday said not only would the Gators seek a waiver for Cox’s immediate eligibility, but added that he was fairly confident that it will be granted.
“We’re definitely going to apply for a waiver for him and see,” Mullen told reporters Monday in Gainesville, Fla. “I think, we hope, we feel good about it, of having him be able to play. I think you look at all the previous scenarios that are out there around the country. We feel we have a good opportunity.”
Not so fast, my friend.
The odds are very long that former Georgia 5-star outside linebacker Brenton Cox will be cleared to play this season at Florida.
That’s according to NCAA transfer expert Tom Mars. The Atlanta-based attorney, who is considered one of country’s foremost legal authorities on the NCAA’s transfer policies, said he doesn’t have any inside knowledge about the grounds Cox might use to request a waiver for immediate eligibility with the Gators, but he doesn’t see it happening.
“Unless there’s some well-kept secret that would qualify him for a waiver, I’d say chances of Brenton Cox getting a waiver are approximately zero,” Mars said Tuesday.
Um, that doesn’t sound too good for ol’ Danny — but wait, there’s more!
“This comment from coach Mullen typifies part of the root problem with the current thinking about waivers,” Mars told the AJC. “It’s impossible to generalize about these cases. And it’s irrational for anyone to think that just because this or that player got a waiver, some other player with different circumstances should probably get one, too.”
An irrational Florida coach? Why, I never.
Get The Picture 
Well, a big part of a positive outcome for the player is the cooperation of their previous program. We didn’t object to Fields waiver request and it’s probable we actively supported it for long term recruiting reasons. You can look at the current stories around Hudson transferring from Michigan to Cincy. Raise your paw if you think an alleged malcontent is going to get help from Kirby to go play for Dan Mullen. Ain’t. Gonna. Happen. Kirby is cut-throat.

If Kirby knows this guy to be toxic on and off the field, why would he oppose the move to FL? That could be a win-win for UGA. Lose bad apple to rival who will help spoil that whole bunch. Of course, that bunch in Hogtown are pretty “spoiled” as it is.

Has Mullen made a commit on why he is even considering taking Cox? He does know he was dismissed from UGA due to troubled issues, right? With so many of the rats leaving the ship down there, and his public statements about the type of honorable program he wants, you would think he would be a little more selective. I guess he is really desperate at this point. But still, how do you answer the questions surrounding the efforts of taking on yet another troubled player? (SMH)

Well, Mullen said they checked Cox’s background and were okay with what they found. I think that means someone counted five stars, and Cox was able to fog a mirror.

The feminist activist who said, “he just doesn’t get it” might be dead on the money. Dan has made beating Georgia number one on his list of short term goals and he’s been trying to do it on and off the field since day one. That attempted flea-flicker in the WLOCP was no coincidence. Brenton Cox’s attitude issues took the backseat to whatever PR win he could finagle from his dismissal from Georgia. He thinks it makes him look like he has some sort of power over us but really he looks like Captain Ahab, recklessly piloting the Pequod into the storm just to get his white whale.
I saw this news along with the news of GaTech gettting Derrik Allen from the transfer portail, a “coup” as their head coach called it on social media. Coaches love to complain about the transfer portal until they’re on the receiving end, whereupon they brag about stealing players not realizing that they themselves are those kids’ second and third choice schools.

Slightly off topic, but there was an article in the Daily Report a few days ago that identified Tom Mars as Wal-Mart’s former GC – I assume that is what has allowed him to focus on and become the go-to guy in this area, and of course it creates a great deal of credibility with those who you are dealing with. Not sure if you saw it, but was interesting nonetheless…

What about being former GC allows him to focus on transfer students?
He mostly came to fame in college football circles for his role as Houston Nutt’s attorney while the University was trying to pass off most of its recruiting violations as a result of Nutt, and not then current head coach Hugh Freeze. My assumption is that he’s moved exclusively into sports law.

I’m not sure if Mullen is that clueless or he’s just trying to speak it into existence. Unlike Fields, Kirby/UGA will fight the request tooth and nail.
I suspect this whole charade was part of the deal to get Cox to Gainseville, and because Florida is desperate for talent, they went along with it even knowing there was no shot.

I hope he DOES get a waiver. If he does he will not be up to speed on the defensive calls (like he “was” in the SECCG) and it will be a wasted year. One less year that the TURDS have a talented yet troubled player (if he last more than a year with them)

It doesn’t matter if he gets the waiver or not. Swift and Co. will put up big numbers by running to either side Cox plays on, because everyone knows that he won’t set the edge.
