Musical palate cleanser, who is this guy, anyway? edition

Meet Ollie Halsall, the best guitar player you’ve never heard of before now.

That’s some pretty insane stuff for any era, but considering that came out in 1972, it’s beyond wild.  If you’ve got some time to spare, do a little digging on YouTube.  His body of work is ridiculous.  As his former mate in Patto once said of him, “Ollie may not have been the best guitarist in the world, but he was certainly among the top two.”

Eh, here’s one more cut, from Patto’s second album, the title cut, “Hold Your Fire”, with its jaw dropping start from Halsall.

Kinda reminds me of the Groundhogs albums “Thank Christ for the Bomb” and “Split,” which would be around the same early ‘70s time frame. Pretty aggressive and stripped down proto-punk chord progressions, rhythms and guitar tones, overlaid with some balls-out Who-like guitar flaying.

Not sure why the previous response was nested under TMC’s comment. Probably something to do with mobile, but whatever.

For something more recent and a sign that the kids are all right, I would definitely check out Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees. Ty’s new live album, Deforming Lobes, is “Live at Leeds”-level rock. And, since going to a two-drummer format, Thee Oh Sees have gone from a more psych/punk version of the Cramps to one of my favorite descriptions from a YouTube commenter: “This is what the Allman Brothers would sound like in Hell.”

Both Ty and Thee Oh Sees are insanely prolific (think Guided by Voices in terms of the number of proper albums and side projects each releases in a year), but the worst you’ll get is very, very good indeed.
