A Boom divided against himself…

Will Muschamp is complicated.

Muschamp grew up a big Herschel Walker fan in Rome, Georgia. His dad then moved to Gainesville, Florida, where Muschamp began pulling for the Gators.

In 1980, Walker ran for 1,616 yards as an 18-year-old freshman with 238 of those yards coming in a season-defining 26-21 win for Georgia over Florida.

Whenever the game is replayed on the SEC Network, Muschamp makes his kids watch just for the sheer history.

“I cried that day the Gators lost. I was devastated,” Muschamp said.

Jeez, man.  I don’t know I’da told that one.

How diesakid in Rome “grow up a HW fan” in the PRE internet, pre ESPN, era a couple hundred miles from Wrightsville, yet be crying when freshman HW beats the Gators? How did he ever see or hear of HW? I was in law school in Athens when HW was in HS, I had heard of him during recruiting, but I never even saw a picture of him. Boom sounds confused.

That is what I was thinking. Walker was a blocking fullback until his junior year. Boom is selling that as a kid in Rome he was a big fan of a sophomore blocking back at a Class A country school 200 miles away.

A guy who was in school with me who was actually FROM Wrightsville mentioned that they had a sophomore who was going to be really good. There weren’t any film clips, no sports talk radio, no recuiting sites (may have been a newsletter or two, but only the real psycho recruitniks saw those). We heard of HW, barely, before his senior year, and then, of course, the talk started during recruiting season about how everyone was after him. The Clemson guy in the cornfield with the sack of cash, John Robinson of USC (the real one) and his LA connections, Mike Cavan taking up residence in Wrightsville (that one is actually true). And then, finally he signed with UGA on Easter Sunday.

But none of us ever saw him play, and I doubt any of us could have picked him out of a lineup before he signed. Did we want him? He sounded like he was good, people we hated wanted him, so he must be good. But even if you’re a coach’s kid, it’s hard for me to believe that anyone who wasn’t in his region knew much about him, much less “grew up a huge HW fan” from 200 miles away. Only Boom really knows what he knew or didn’t know, but the whole thing sounds kind of shaky to me. I liked the frenzy with which he played for UGA, but he’s been dead to me since he took over at Florida and immediately started crapping on UGA at his intial presser.

Public Enemy #2 in my book, behind Meyer. If Muschamp gets hit by a bus, I’m wearing a smile that entire day.

Agreed. That’s the type of shit a man can never deny or take back.

None of that makes sense. He was nine when that game was played and Herschel had been a star for all of maybe eight weeks. Boom’s full of shit.

So just because his dad moved to a different town he abandoned the team of his childhood? Sounds like poor parenting to me. Come on man!!!

Any kid under 10 who loves sports has cried about it for some reason. A loss, a failure, etc. Adults only cry when their team loses the natty in OT or the Super Bowl after leading 28-3.

Boom is an overrated asshole. Thank God UGA never hired him, especially after what he said about UGA. Had they done so I would have cashed in my chips..

Agree, Spike. There were some UGA fans who wanted us to hire Boom as DC and “coach in waiting “ about 10 years ago. Thank goodness that didn’t happen.

Feel the same way about Mullen. Thank god McGarity was talked (forced?) out of that decision.

As for Boom, why UGA hasn’t rescinded his diploma is beyond me.

He’s a complete liar in addition to being a psychopath and terrible coach. I was a freshman at Georgia when Herschel was being recruited and had lived my whole life about 70 miles from Wrightsville and only had a slight idea about who Herschel was before he came to Athens. Most of my awareness of Herschel was because a local Clemson booster was going around town bragging about how much money he was spending trying to get Herschel to go to Clemson. Muschamp expects someone to believe a 7 or 8 year old boy in Rome was a fan of a high school player from a single A school 200 miles away?

I guess the chicken fans are dumb enough to fall for that.

Gratuitous lies FTW! I suppose its just to remind everyone he’ll lie about anything, and he’s fool enough to think anyone with an ounce of brains will believe him.

Does he hate UGA because we gave him free room and board, university education and a place to start learning his lifetime profession? I’m really not understanding Boom’s own particular…
    Idiom, sir?

we took a chance on him after he broke a leg in HS and his dream school in Gainesville didn’t want to give him the time of day. You’re welcome, Boom. I get that when you coach someplace, you have to be 100% that place, but you don’t have to keep crapping on your actual alma mater, do you? You’re all class…..low class.

Or is he angry that he never got fast tracked into being the coach here, since he is so brilliant ?
