A complete mystery

Can somebody look at the above chart and explain to me how Clay Helton is still gainfully employed at Southern Cal?

And Texas isn’t exactly the gritty little underdog they are made out to be either. They actually have more talent than OK.

That list also makes clear the awesome coaching job Mullen is doing at UF. Handicapped by not having the talent other top ten programs have, he still gets his players to buy in, have fun and win games. We will look back some day and admire the job he did with so little.

Simple. Urban wasn’t available this cycle.

It’s definitely surprising to see Clemson that far down that list.

It doesn’t surprise me. I’ve said on here many times that Clem’s recruiting isn’t in the same solar system as Bama, Ohio State or for that matter us. Dabo gets it done. They were very lucky with injuries last year. I don’t think anyone can match their coordinators. What they did to Bama last year was just amazing. Hope we get a shot at them this year.

Or Willie? My FSU friends say the cupboard was left bare.

I’m thinking that Willie is a dead man walking. He will have to do some amazing things soon to stay at FSU.

      Willie does less…with more.

In his defense, the team was a mess before he got there. He may not be able to fix it, but last year isn’t definitive proof of that.

Yeah, it’s interesting that those who are quick to bury Taggart don’t acknowledge the mess Jimbo left behind. FSU needs to improve drastically this season though, because its sink or swim for him now.

Yep, Jimbo left a real mess at FSU. I wonder how long before the rot sets in at A&M.

As a Georgia fan, we should all understand the problem with having an overall very talented team, but with very little talent at O line. That’s what Taggart took over.

Agreed and as far as Clemson goes, they are doing very well at DL.

You can win big with less talent at skill positions if you own the line of scrimmage but Barry Sanders could only get teams so far without the LOS. Clemson has a very good to elite DL, good OL and a very good QB.

Last year the talent gap between Bama and us was 15 points. This year it’s 23. May not be statistically significant but….

So effectively if you’re not on this list you have been eliminated from contention for this seasons national championship. No national champion in the playoff era has come from outside the top 10 in composite talent rankings (Clemson at #9 in2016 is the lowest, national champion was #6, 1,9 and 1 in composite talent rankings from 2018 – 2015, respectively, no data for 2014 from 247 but I imagine results are similar) and only one outside of the top ten has won a playoff game (Clemson was #13 in 2015 defeating #16 Oklahoma). Tldr: talent matters, arguably moreso in the playoff era.

I kept looking, but I did not see that ULTRA talented Gators that their fans keep talking about anywhere on that top 10 list. According to their fans, they are rapidly closing the talent gap with the DAWGS so this has to be wrong. It must just be an oversight after what I witnessed on Saturday night. Especially at QB. Surely this will be corrected in a reprint.

Dabo ain’t coaching up a damned thing. All Clemson is doing is playing a paper-thin ACC schedule that allows them to breeze through the season and get up for 1 or 2 games during the regular season and 2 games in the playoffs. The other 11 games are for rest and practice. The secret to their success is not hard to see.

I don’t buy the line of thought that Clemson is just more rested or less beat up come playoff time because of their soft schedule. It removes their risk of missing the playoff, but there’s a month for everyone else to rest up and heal by the time the games take place. Georgia would have been better served playing a beat up Alabama team in the SEC title game two years ago. They were basically back to full strength by the time the national title game rolled around.

California youth and high school participation numbers are dropping like flies on a year over year basis. Meanwhile the state is losing more residents via domestic migration to other states than are moving in. Meanwhile state growth is coming from international migration where futbol is probably the sport of choice.

While the population is enormous, the football focused slice of the pie is shrinking and its not helped by the general national trend by younger generations to follow other interests.

Clay Helton still has a job because the SC administration is inept and their fan base is increasingly becoming more apathetic about the sport. He probably gets canned this year and maybe Urban Meyer will swoop in and save the program before leaving it in flames 4 years later.

College football is becoming a regional sport, if it isn’t already. The Northeast checked out long ago with the exception of Penn State. The Midwest is struggling to compete at the top with the exception of tOSU and maybe Michigan due to a lack of high school talent in their backyard. The West Coast coast has players and tradition but the fan bases increasingly aren’t that invested in the sport with exception of a few schools. That leaves the Southeast and Southwest as the engine that will drive the sport into the future. Now we’re seeing west coast high school players migrate to play college ball in the south in numbers that would have been unthinkable years ago. Not sure any of this good for the sport long term but the trends are undeniable.

Totally agree. I live in Marin County just north of San Francisco and there is legislation trying to be pushed through that would ban tackle football under the age of 12. They have already passed laws that middle school’s and high school’s can only have two 90 minute full contact practices a week. My thoughts on this is that if you don’t practice tackling how can you learn how to tackle correctly. There is a growing trend out here from parents to not let their sons play football.

I have no idea. I am a huge SC fan (after UGA of course, been following them since I was a kid – long story).
He got thrust into the job and I am thinking they may be a little gun shy making a change based on the flops since Pete Carroll left (not talking about the NCAA issues, strictly football coaching skill).
However if they dont produce this year I cant see them keeping him. I have no idea who they would go after to replace him.
Southern Cals problem is they tend to focus on people that have ties to the program and sometimes that’s great (Kirby) but a lot of times not. Also I think poor leadership from the AD.
I sure as hell don’t want Urban the devil anywhere near the SC campus (but strictly coaching football, could you imagine what he’d do with all the talent he could get there? As much talent as he was getting at Ohio State, I think he’d get more at SC).
