… it’s about the frickin’ Jimmies and Joes.
For example, here's how overall SP+ rating compared to average 4-yr recruit rating for the 2018 season. pic.twitter.com/glzDbmBnZU

“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23
I agree it’s about the Jimmies and the Joes but it’s also about coaches coaching them up and not screwing up the talent they have.

… which can be seen by looking at the programs drifting off to the left or right of the pack in that chart. USC, FSU, UNC, UCLA, etc. aren’t doing much with talent on hand. Mizzou, Fresno, App State and Utah State are doing pretty well with in spite of not having much talent.
Pretty eye opening chart to look at.

And based on their being so far left of the “pack” on the graph that coach might be in pretty good position to do well out of the gates.

You dont have to coach them up as much as not screw them up. Let the talent do the work.

Mizzu’s position confirms my thoughts…that they outperform their recruiting. They recruit like Vandy and perform on ND’s level. That has to catch up to them sooner or later.

Well, last year they did. They performed on Kansas State’s level in 2017, Vanderbilt’s level in 2016 and Duke’s level in 2015. I’m not trying to cherry pick or anything. Those were literally the three teams that finished immediately behind them those three years.

Jeff Tedford, now at Fresno, had a similar record of out performing at Cal. It eventually caught up with him. Still, one heck of a coach.

Any underperforming team with a roster with across-the-board raw talent is obviously set up for a breakout season, any given season…if they can pull it together. I look at that chart, see USC and FSU floating in no man’s land and think, “when (or perhaps if) it clicks for them this season, the playoff picture could get really interesting by November.
