Let me try to get my head around this…..
Alabama’s AD is petulant because the networks won’t give THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA a prime time slot to beat up on a cupcake? Maybe Alabama should start it’s own network (Cough longhorn cough) buy some airtime and they can show THEIR games to THEIR fans any time they want.

For the life of me, I can’t think of what happened around 2014 or so that caused the schools not to be able to pick the times and local/regional stations/networks (i.e., CSS, FSS, etc.) that they used to play these crappy, early season out-of-conference home games on. Maybe if Greg checks his wallet, he will have an awakening…

Munson said it best when he referred to television as “the Lord and Master”. I think tv contracts take all scheduling authority away from the school and give it to the tv network.

As someone who has been to many September games in Athens and seen all sorts of kickoff times, from noon to 7:30pm, I still think a noon kickoff is actually the best way to avoid heat for the entire gameday experience. Everyone just assumes that noon games are hotter than late afternoon games because of the break you get in the temps toward the end of the game. I would beg to differ.
If you really think about the whole day and not just the game itself, you realize that noon is the best option for hot September cupcake games. What I’ve observed over the years is that from about noon/1pm to around 7pm is the hottest part of the day. So your 3-4 hours of tailgating for noon kickoffs are during the coolest part of the day (relatively speaking here), whereas 3:30pm/4:00pm kickoffs mean you’re tailgating during the hottest part of the day AND you’re sitting in the stadium for the game during the hottest part of the day. Postgame tailgates for noon kickoffs are obviously during the hottest part of the day, but how long do you really stick around those after the game, other than to let some of the traffic die down? And if it’s just too hot to do that, then you have the option to hop in your car and sit in the A/C in traffic.
Not to mention that noon kickoffs mean most people within a 1 to 2 hour driving distance from Athens will have a chance to get home and see the primetime games, which are usually the best games of the day and/or intriguing non-conference matchups. And for those who are staying in town, they have the chance to go out to dinner, watch primetime games, get to their hotel/home at a reasonable hour, etc..
I know some will disagree but that’s my take.

I agree with you fully. For cupcake games in early September, noon is the best time for me. It is much cooler from noon until 2:00 or so than it is from 4:00 until 6:00 and getting home or back to the tailgate to watch some of the 3:30 game and the later prime matchups is better than roasting in Athens at the tailgate before a 4:00 cupcake game.

Attending 12:00 or 4:00 September cupcake games would be much more bearable if there weren’t the TV timeouts. If they could just insert the commercials and keep play moving (a delayed broadcast) maybe we could just receive less TV revenue for those games – I suspect that people record these games and fast forward through the commercials. These games are already costing us to pay the opposing teams come play on Dooley Field (that was fun to type).

Not like Georgia fans havent wanted the same thing and would have loved to see our AD advocate on the behalf of the school when it came to scheduling instead of just laying down and doing whatever he is told.

They enter the season ranked #2 instead of #1, with a foul taste in their mouths from last year’s beatdown, and after 2 weeks no one is giving them the level of love and attention they’re used to. So far the media’s been fawning all over Clemson, and LSU with their win over Texas, and Auburn showing signs of competency with Bo Nix. It must be getting to them if Saban is whining this hard this early.
It’s not that complicated. If you want people to give a shit about (and stay through the entirety of) your games then schedule games worth giving a shit about.

They are wearing 17 pieces of flair to get into CFP. Someone should tell the AD that if you want primetime slots, then schedule prime opponents.

Joshdub should see what the sample set is. My sense is we are a team that historically jumps into the conference season early (for many years, SCar was always the second game of the season), while Bama starts it later – the main reason for this, of course, is that we have an OOC game at the end of the season, while they do not…
