Observations from the 35, Arkansas State edition

Well, they did it.  Georgia went out and played itself a full 60-minute, focused game and creamed a Sun Belt opponent.  Over six hundred yards of offense and a shutout on the other side of the ball gave us a strong hint of what this team is capable of when firing on all cylinders — and I’m not sure that characterization is totally fair, given those results came with a starting offensive right tackle out with injury and a receiving corps and quarterback still working out their timing, among other issues.

Damned impressive, in other words.  How ’bout a few bullet points?

  • My game ball on offense goes to Lawrence Cager, who seemed to be blocking somebody downfield on every major gain Saturday and tossed in a terrific touchdown catch to boot.  That’s how you grab a starting job and hang on to it.
  • The receiving corps was down two starters, lost another key player in game, and didn’t miss a beat.  Blaylock and Pickens are coming on strong and fast.
  • Matt Landers, you’ve got to lay out for that long ball, man.
  • So much for the annual promise of the tight ends becoming more involved in the passing game.
  • The offensive line handled a big defensive front with zero difficulty.  If Arkansas State was resorting to stunts and twists like Georgia faced in its first two games, it was hard to notice, because nobody got through.  It was Trey Hill’s best game of the season and that’s a very good sign.
  • Every scholarship tailback scored?  Very cool.
  • Fromm was Fromm and it’s exciting to watch him hone his timing with this receiver group.  As it was, at times, Saturday seemed almost too easy for him.
  • I thought Bennett showed nice progress.  He didn’t force any throws, showed nice touch and also some good wheels on his run.
  • Every week that goes by reinforces how ridiculous this defense’s overall speed is.  They simply overwhelmed the ASU offensive line up front and pounded the hell out of the Red Wolves’ quarterback.  That Quay Walker sack on a delayed blitz looked like he was shot out of a cannon.
  • On the d-line, Georgia got a terrific game out of Tyler Clark and solid ones out of Jordan Davis and Devonte Wyatt.  If they keep that up, Georgia’s front seven is more than good enough.
  • Tae Crowder still drives me crazy.  He’s smart, has some of the best instincts of any player on Georgia’s defense, always seems to be there to make a play… and is inconsistent on wrapping up his tackling.
  • Tyson Campbell had the best game of his career.  He was lights out on every play where the pass was in front of him and getting better when he covered with his back to the quarterback.  Solid tackling in the run game, too.
  • I’m guilty of not saying enough good things about J. R. Reed.  In position seemingly on every play and a solid tackler, he’s simply the glue that holds the defense together.
  • Special teams very quietly have turned themselves into a real force.  I’m at the point where I’m surprised there’s a return on a Blankenship kickoff.  He was also perfect on nine kicks for scores.  Camarda has been a most pleasant surprise.  We knew he has a big leg, but this year, he’s found a level of consistency that was lacking before.

As for coaching, well, we jump on Smart’s case for things like the fake field goal/fake punt in last year’s LSU game/SECCG as evidence that his coaching leaves something to be desired, but coaching also involves getting your team ready to play, something that’s not always easy in a game like Saturday’s.  Instead, he had Georgia ready to play from the get go and for the first time this season there was no period when the team relaxed.  Roster management through the first three games has been excellent and Georgia showed just enough wrinkles on both sides of the ball against ASU to give Notre Dame something to think about.

In case you can’t tell, I really like where this team is at right now.

Absolutely! So little to complain about and so much to love. The Dawgs have become a complete package. If not spectacular, we are solid at every position, every stage of the game. That makes a team hard to beat through 60 minutes.
I know it goes against history but I honestly think Woerner and Wolf would see more passes if not for the emergence of Pickens and company.
Pickens is like ballet on a football field.
I have much love for Clark. I saw enough flashes of potential before this year to feel he would be a force. He reminds me of a DL from the past but I can’t bring the name to mind right now. Getting older beats the alternative but still sucks some times.
The newbies flying around on D is enough to get anyone excited. I can’t wait to see how they all develop.

Bingo! Thanks for the memory jog. I had started going through old rosters. Who needs a memory when you have friends to remind you. 🙂

After he became a pro perhaps. Geno’s coming out party was the Senior Bowl, imo, he never seemed to dominate at UGA. Our DL coaches missed on that potential, the pro staffs in Mobile found something and the effect was immediate. But Clark began to flash last season, if he stays healthy he will be a force all year.

Camarda has recovered from an inconsistent freshman year. As I recall, he began last season booming punt but could not execute the shorter, positional kicks to keep them from going into the end zone. I felt in trying to work on a new technique for the pooch kick, he changed something that affected his “driving distance”. Probably too simple but that seemed to coincide with issues from the first couple of games. He wasn’t bad, just not the weapon we expected.

Actually, Geno was reluctant to play hard in CFB b/c there’s no money in it and he knew there are only so many times you crash your body without it taking an accumulative effect. I seem to recall reading his father was slightly punch drunk from football so Geno was smart about preserving himself until it mattered

This was my perception. He coasted through and they started him anyway because at 75% he was better that his potential replacement.

That’s the benefit of recruiting at a high level. Coasting is no longer a potential path to the nfl. Bench or transfer portal only!

Everyone acts like CMR was a great recruiter. At RB and QB maybe but at the big ugly spots we left a lot to be desired in terms of both depth and want to. That cost us in big games when we had studs at the skilled positions.

  3. That defensive size and speed is going to make Ian Book’s life miserable. If Brandon Wimbush couldn’t make plays with his legs, Book is going to find tough sledding.

The real star of this event was the star spangled banner sign language interpreter.
I’m serious. This guy needs to be at every game.

Quay Walker looked like Roquan on that sack. RS3 would look like he was going 100 mph while everyone else was in slow motion; that’s what Quay looked like on that play. If the light has come on for him like it did for RS3, look out below.

As some folks pointed out last week, even though we shuttle players in and out and use the entire roster, the procedure penalties, forced time outs, or other mistakes are non-existent. The organization and discipline is impressive.

  7. It certainly looks like we are playing much more complimentary football, a la 2017, than we did last year.

They need to do it against a real team now, but this team is loaded and seems to have better chemistry than last year’s edition.

Sorry to nitpick, but it was a fake punt in the SECCG.

Haven’t watched replay but I recall Mark Webb getting beat on a play.

Also seem to recall the ASU QB going right at Tyson on several throws, which I assume means the OC perceives him as our weak link. If he can’t just turn his head, he’ll be good.

Tyson finally put a complete game together. Kid has the talent to be a shutdown corner but that hasn’t always translated to the field on game day. Hopefully the light has come on for him. If so, we might have the best defensive backfield that we’ve had in quite some time. The fact that might be possible after loosing the Thorpe award winner from last year is a testament to the job Kirby and Co have done. Damn it’s a great time to be a Dawg!

one of the gentlemen sitting near me said Kirby has hot rod kick the ball short in order to work on coverage on purpose. he said he mentioned it in a press conference. true or naw?

Folks you don’t know me and have no reason to honor my request. I ask that instead of flashlights for the 4th quarter you light your screen RED. This will be a nice complement to the new red led lighting at Sanford.

Senator, I felt the same way. I left thinking – for the first time in I can remember – that we’ve improved every game and we look like a complete and dominate team. And that’s in a game we could have easily looked past for this week.

Here’s an overlooked aspect of Kirby’s genius in leaving no stone unturned.
How big was it to go out and bring Stetson back to Athens? What other coach would have thought to, much less actually have done that? What, (Lord forbid) if Jake got the flu..or injured?
Who would be backing up Fromm and would they be solid?
Not meant to bash Fields, but I actually feel better with SB running the team than I have any backup QB in years. Of course, having such a great O line and receiving corp is a huge part of why.
But it’s a “detail” that CKS left not to chance, but was proactive in fixing.

Good comment, that was unorthodox, but done immediately by the staff. Also comment above is dead on, we have taking a step forward after each game this season to where we can now say, we are ready for the test this weekend. That includes getting some film, and meaningful reps, for every back up player. That could pay dividends down the road during the stretch run. Masterful, never felt so comfortably uncomfortable at this point of any season. Let’s rock!!

There is a reasonably high probability that Stetson Bennett will be the starting QB for Georgia next season, too.

I’m really hoping Jake likes Athens and is looking for a repeat. I like Stetson but not sure he gets us where we want to be.

I wonder about Jake’s criteria for staying or leaving. Would finally beating ‘Bama satisfy him enough to leave? Would winning the Natty? Or would it make him eager to do a repeat? Would a disappointing finish bring him back or help him decide to leave? I hope Kirby is whispering in his ear.
“You know you probably won’t have this good of a line or receivers to work with if you go pro, don’t you Jake?”

    My observations on Saturday.

I really like the Pittman YESSSSSSIIRRRRR on big plays.

I appreciate the love of Nova Scotia, but not sure why game times for out of town games were listed in Atlantic time Zone times.

This Arkansas St team looks like just another patsy….they are BETTER than we made them look.

Great synopsis Senator. I think you nailed all the major points. Something feels special about this team. There’s plenty of hurdles to overcoming, including one on Saturday night, but from where I’m sitting I think Kirby has these boys dialed in.
