I don’t have the stomach for an impeachment discussion — not that I’m stopping any of you from doing so in the comments — but, speaking of stomach, I hope you guys saw Andy Staples’ piece ($$) on the top 25 college towns ranked by dining experience.  Two Georgia places made his list:

4. Georgia

When you get to Athens, the first thing you need is a Knuckle Sandwich. No, this isn’t what happens when you tick off a Georgia offensive lineman. It’s knuckle ham (also called ham hock, this is essentially the meat from around the pig’s ankle) with egg, cheddar cheese and apple butter on a fresh-baked biscuit at Mama’s Boy. While you’re there — and they’ve now opened a second location so the wait isn’t so interminably long — order a cinnamon roll. They’re the size of footballs, and they’re perfect for splitting four ways over a leisurely brunch. (Or for me to eat by myself with breakfast after a particularly hard workout. Not saying that happened last week, but it might have happened last week.)

The Knuckle Sandwich at Mama’s Boy in Athens (Andy Staples / The Athletic)

Few towns pack so many great restaurants into such a small area. Get the Redneck Reuben or more standard barbecue fare at Pulaski Heights. Get drunk on Tango Whiskey Foxtrots (whiskey, lemon, maraschino liqueur and ginger ale in a glass rimmed with Tang powder) and then chase them with a chicken and waffle club (fried chicken between two waffles with bourbon maple butter and hot sauce) and fried pickled okra at The World Famous. After polishing off The Gravy Train (a fried chicken biscuit smothered in gravy) at The Farm Cart, walk next door to Home.Made and cool off with the green tomato crisp (baked green tomato with streusel topping over grits ice cream). Or, if you’re going for a heavy lunch, try the meatloaf sandwich at Last Resort Grill.

10. Georgia Tech

A mixed plate at Superica (Andy Staples / The Athletic)

America’s best fajita plate is at Atlanta’s Superica. Most mixed plates include chicken, steak and pork. Most places don’t use such high-quality steak, and no one else uses pork belly. Everyone at the table will say “oooooh” when this is set down sizzling.

B’s Cracklin’ Barbecue burned down in March, but pit master Bryan Furman isn’t going to let the people of Atlanta go without pulled pork, ribs and cracklin’ cornbread. Next month, one of the nation’s best barbecue joints will reopen inside a Kroger supermarket on Ponce De Leon Avenue. Furman is still working on rebuilding the standalone location, but now he’ll have a chance to be open consistently again instead of only in a series of pop-ups.

No mention of Georgia Tech and food would be complete without pointing out that chili dogs and chili burgers from The Varsity and beautiful biscuits from The Silver Skillet are within walking distance of campus. But a short bike or Uber ride will take you to Antico, home of Atlanta’s best pizza. Get the Diavola (spicy soppressata, pepperonata and buffalo mozzarella) and marvel at the crispy-yet-soft-and-bubbly crust that comes out of the ovens that came across the Atlantic from Italy.

So, I thought I’d ask what you think of those, what you might subtract and what you might add.

Also, what other college towns have had memorable dining experiences for you?  Somebody asked me at the tailgate if Georgia didn’t have a football program what school I would choose to follow.  I gotta tell you, if fandom was a primary excuse to be a foodie, it would be hard not to be a Tulane fan, although if I had to root for a bigger, more winning program, I could settle for Texas and Austin.

And you?

The Mama’s Boy location on Macon Highway usually has a shorter wait. You can thank me later.

Not always true; the older folks in Oconee county prefer that spot and they take their time once they get a table. I’ve been there on a Saturday when the entire parking lot had no vacant spots. The older location is smaller, yes, but they typically get people in and out faster. My other problem with the new one is it gets so damn loud… But they do have a bigger menu.

I find it curious the writer highlighted the knuckle sandwich; it’s good, but the real gem at Mama’s Boy is their pulled pork hash with the poached eggs.

World Famous is next to The Manhattan on Hull Street and has a great atmosphere, fun cocktails and an Byzantine style icon of Kirby on the wall.

Also, it caters to a more ahem mature audience than many of the other Athens dive bars

As a former Charlottesvillian for a quite a few years, I would put C’ville up against any college town in America (and I’ve been to many of the so-called best ones). Not only do you have a great culinary scene in/around town, but you also have all the nearby breweries and wineries (along with their often great menus), with gorgeous views pretty much everywhere you look.

Add to that, the sheer number of joints to pick from alone is unreal, and while the vibe at certain spots at times can be a bit on the snooty side and/or somewhat annoying with all the out of town visitors, overall, again IMO C’ville has every other college town beat by a healthy mile when it comes to food.

Agreed with Austin not being a college town but a town with a college, Atlanta fits the same description. Heck GT doesn’t even have their own little area like Emory.

Juniors was great. Used to eat over there with some of my Tech buddies (yes there are a few that are ok) when I worked in midtown back in the day. Think they had the highest density cornbread I’ve ever eaten.

It was never the same after they moved on campus from their old spot that was replaced by the Olympic residences.

Agree that Austin is way, way too big to ever view it as a college town, but I love the place, and the food there is amazing (and not just the BBQ). IMO, I’ve always found Chapel Hill overrated when it comes to the restaurant scene, and the downtown area, while resembling Athens/UGA quite a bit, is disappointing overall with the limited options compared to Athens. Don’t get me wrong, Chapel Hill is a great area nonetheless, but still a bit overrated for me.

FWIW, Columbia, MO is a pleasant surprise and a very underrated college town. Missoula, MT/Univ. Montana also is one of my favorite college towns as well, though the dining options are limited compared to some of the top spots, though improving yearly.

Lexington is also a great college town. I described it as a smaller and cleaner Athens. Some great restaurants and a great vibe. My daughter went to W&L and UVA Law. She cried when her seven years up there were over.

Good call – Lexington is outstanding and definitely underrated. Awesome town. Not sure why it doesn’t get the attention that Athens, Ann Arbor, Madison, etc. get. IMO Lexington is the best road trip for away games in the SEC.

My wife and I went last year to Lexington. It was a great trip. The bakery as you leave town to get on I-75 is fantastic. We got a dozen cream cheese donuts and it took a tremendous amount of self-control to get back to Athens with any left.

home.made is quietly the best little eatery in Athens. I’m glad to see Mimi and her team get some attention (and also earlier this week from Atlanta Magazine!) If you go, make a point to try the Tomato Pie. Holy smokes.

I was pretty surprised at the article. Andy must have been getting some local knowledge to uncover these gems. I mean, all of those are good calls and at least somewhat under the radar save for Last Resort which is consistent, good, but not spectacular. LR Provisions, though, has a pretty good brunch menu. No qualms with his choices.

This week we had some conversations about how we would recommend ND fans do Athens. I think coming in Thursday and leaving Sunday afternoon would be enough to get a good experience and feel for Athens. That gets you a Thursday night dinner and drinks, all day Friday to check out campus and breweries, the game, then brunch on your way out of town.

As for the Bread Basket, I know of a guy that would go in every morning and buy two sausage biscuits. Eat one and sit the other on the counter at the hardware store where he worked. Lunch time he’d carry that biscuit home for his special lady. Now THAT’S true love.

Stricklands out past the Mall and Biscuit Express in Hull are my go-tos for biscuits. Mayflower is the most overlooked sit down breakfast in town given that thousands walk by it and have probably never given it a second thought.
Mama’s Boy and Last Resort are where locals send students, their parents, and other visitors to eat. They’re not bad by any means but for the price and wait, you can do much better in Athens.

The difference between a negligent, careless or reckless breach of law and flagrant disregard of the law? To traitors, the latter is awesome and the former disqualifying.

    Why? Stupid. Painfully so.

Say Obama sends his lawyer to Russia to investigate Trump Tower and calls Vlad and says, implicitly, “help us out and I’ll see about getting you back in G7.”

The right would clearly say: “so what?”

After all they only take important things like blow jobs and birth certificates seriously.

Exactly. A Democrat orchestrating regime change in another country (like Ukraine) is savvy foreign policy. A Democrat using political favors in order to enrich his son (and then lobbying to get the prosecutor investigating corruption fired) is savvy business. A Republican discussing investigating one of said Democrats with the foreign nation is treason. Why? Stunning and brave, dummies.

Maybe Biden negligently and carelessly got his son rich? Sounds legit.

The logical fallacy you’re using (repeatedly), is ad hominem. You can’t trust The Washington Examiner because it’s right wing. But you can trust Buzzfeed (Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress), CNN (Trump Jr. had advance access to WikiLeaks), and Slate (Trump has a secret server to contact Russian banks) because those left wing publications value truth too much to get caught up in leftist hysteria.

Here are some interesting tweets from a Wall Street Journal (gasp!) columnist.
8)Meanwhile, the IG back in August referred this to DOJ as potential violation of campaign finance law, based on whistleblower complaint. Criminal Division evaluated and determined no violation: “All relevant components of the Department agreed with this legal conclusion.”
            9) Whistleblower? Look at this nugget, referenced in the OLC opinion. The IG’s review found “some indicia of an arguable political bias on the part of the Complainant in favor of a rival political candidate.”

It’s amusing that, after your crusade for truth and justice, your final link is a “what if frogs had wings” hypothetical from a slightly right of center, never-Trumper Republican. I suppose you can file that right beside such devastating insights as, “If the electoral college didn’t exist, Hillary would be president.”

You didn’t read the letters from the IG now did ya? NB left out key information, kinda changes the context amirite?
“Further, although the IGIC’s preliminary review identified some indicia of an arguable political bias on the part of the Complainant in favor of a rival political candidate, such evidence did not change my interpretation that the complaint relating to the urgent concern appears credible, particularly given the other information the IGIC obtained during its preliminary review.”

              Hmmm, what other information?!?

I didn’t know shit about the Washington Examiner until you mentioned it. It was created by a right-wing billionaire who tried to make it look like a real news organization while it was basically a front for spreading right wing talking points. Washington Examiner – Bias and Credibility

WSJ has an excellent news division with many REAL journalists. Fox even has a number of good journalists in its news division. Here is one:

So ladies & gentlemen, the bottom line here is NB is promoting the right wing meme of the day regarding the whistleblower. The Big Smear. In this case his sources are fringe sites that are part of the right wing echo chamber, not real journalism. It’s a pattern.

When called out on ad hominem, there’s nothing like doubling down. Hilarious! Just fallacy harder!

Yes, as I stated, the examiner is right wing. It just hasn’t been busted selling falsehoods like the “credible” left wing sources you think should be trusted.

So yes, the IG letter stated that a politically motivated accusation should go to Congress. And the DOJ said it was a nothing burger. And the transcript of the call has nothing.

But you just keep on wishing and hoping. I’m sure BuzzFeed has a compelling listicle about how Trump not offering a quid pro quo is actually proof of quid pro quo. BTW, that’s a Latin phrase like ad hominem. I hope it doesn’t trip you up again.

As usual, Derek’s on point. It doesn’t matter what Trump says. It doesn’t matter what Trump does. Because Derek knows what Trump is THINKING! And we can trust Derek. He’s the smartest kid in middle school.

What we really need to do right now is to come together as a nation and inpeach Trump for the things that we’re pretty sure he wants to do. Regardless of whether he’s actually done them or not.

When you got nothing shout Logical Fallacy! Ad hominem!

I have a number of friends who are similar to NB. When Benghazi was all the rage in the echo chamber, rather than argue with men who have little to no experience in politics, I made bets with them. They were certain Hillary would be indicted. Honestly, I had no deep knowledge about the issue but it sounded like a con job. So I made fairly substantial bets that within a year Hillary would not be indicted (yes I gave them a year!). And that my friend is one way to deal with stubborn emotional ideologues. Make em put their money where the mouth is, they can’t resist.

When I collected my winnings, I told them hey you should be mad at the Congressional Republicans who investigated Benghazi nine ways to Sunday but couldn’t come up with evidence of crimes. What a bunch of incompetent boobs!

That’s a great idea. Care to make wagers on impeachment? I can recall leftists, even on this board, gloating back in 2017 that Trump’s days were numbered. Smoking guns abounded. Mueller’s report would be the nail in the coffin. Yawn.

Yes please, I bet the House votes to impeach Trump by next summer, maybe earlier. Name your terms.

Just so we’re clear, The House votes on the articles of impeachment, requiring a simple majority to pass them. Upon passage of the articles, an individual has been impeached. Agree?

Your side has continued to push the envelope of criminalizing political differences. Barr came out of retirement because he had seen enough. Things are not going to go well for the corrupt officials in your echo chamber.

Not that you or any of your other acolytes will believe a word of it.

Every senator voted to release the whistle blower report that was required by law to be turned over. Are all 53 gop senators in my echo chamber?

          Why support lawlessness?

Why support inventing privileges that don’t exist?

A private citizen can’t disclose what the president says to him? Since when?

At some point you have to get your head out of your ass and see that you morons elected a careless mafioso boss who spends all day long trying to get away with shit via cover ups distractions and obstruction.

Derek… I apologize for being too mean spirited. Forgive me if I think it’s a lack of critical thinking on your part and the fact that you get your news from the daily talking points of one particular party. Trump may be an ass but he is not a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States. But he is a clear and present danger to all the corruption which is slowly being uncovered. What in the hell are you going to do when Barr and Durham start releasing indictments of some of those heroes whom you so religiously adore. And how the media tries to spin it all will be so predictable… Barr bad. I look forward to that play pen and a real dialogue with you about wtf just happened. Have a great day and Go Dawgs!

When those felons catch up with the likes of Manafort, Gates, Cohen, Flynn, Papadopoulos., etc…. just let me know. Right now it’s a lot to 0.

I personally don’t think criminality is the partisan issue that you do. I suppose if there were that quantum of felon associates of politician whose ass my head was stuck up, i might also be in denial.

Exactly. Papadopoulos got nearly TWO WEEKS in jail! That’s the kind of evil we’re talking about!

I mean, if destroying evidence under subpoena was illegal, Hillary would be in jail. If accepting campaign help from a foreign government was illegal, Bill Clinton would be in jail. Since they’re not, they obviously did nothing wrong.

But the teflon don of D.C. will be brought down by … Facebook ads. Or … Ukrainians. Or … hell, we’ll think of something.

I agree with Bill Weld. Trump went about getting OPPO research in the most horrible and treasonous way. While on the phone with a foreign leader as basically said “hey, if you could send me some OPPO, I would appreciate it”. That level of coercion is exactly what they founders were talking about in Article 3 Section 3 of the Constitution.

Conversely, the Democrats have shown us the truly patriotic and fair way of getting OPPO. What you do is pay a :Law Firm to pay an OPPO company to pay a foreign spy to compile OPPO. You then take that OPPO and feed it to the FBI and mislead a FISA court to get a warrant to spy, oops, I mean “covertly surveil” members of their election committee. You then have political operatives feed that surveiled information to the press.

I give it about 80% probability that the whole non-event was orchestrated by Trump. They already had the video mocking everyone’s calls for impeachment released on Monday.

      Extortion is hilarious!!

What did the people who spoke to Steele have dangling in the balance?

The capacity to fight off the Russians?

The problem with you folks isn’t that you hold a different opinion it’s that you’re too stupid to know you’re stupid.

Using your official position with the United States to further personal political gain is exactly the sort of corruption that impeachment is for.

      Dumb ass.

The problem is that you are too delusional to remember that I am neither a Republican nor a Trump fan. I write the posts for no other reason than to mock your inability to differentiate between reality and your imagination. You really do take mind-reading to a whole new level. I wonder if you will ever figure out that you don’t do anything except call people stupid after they point out that you believe things that are demonstrably false.

If you remember, I have nothing against how the DNC got the Steele Dossier. My only complaint is then using it as the fraudulent basis for getting the FISA warrant on Carter Page.

The dnc got a fisa warrant? Really?

Have you read the fisa warrant? Do you know it relied upon, or did it merely mention, the Steele dossier?

And even if that’s all terrible, do you get charged with double murder and say “what about OJ? He got away with it, so should I! It’s not fair that I should be punished if someone else wasn’t!!”

This is why you’re stupid. I’m not going to stop calling stupid stupid to be polite.

Good points, Derek. When senior officials in the FBI talked of their insurance policy to deal with Trump’s election, and then lied to the court about the evidence in the warrant application, that’s just called patriotism. And intelligence. Because only dummies believe in due process and the peaceful transfer of power. Geniuses believe that Facebook ads determine the fate of the world!

The dnc got a fisa warrant? Really?

Yes. Either the DNC (or someone who received the dossier from the DNC) gave the dossier to the the FBI or they open FISA warrants based on information given by foreign spies / people that receive “info” from foreign spies.

The DOJ has admitted that the Steele Dossier was the sole piece of “evidence” presented for the warrant. From whom did they receive the Dossier?

            Like

            • Derek

That’s bullshit. You can come to any conclusion you want if you believe lies. Those are lies. There is NO truth to the idea that a fisa warrant was based SOLELY on the Steele dossier. You need to do better research and look at better sources. The Steele dossier was a part of the basis for the warrant and parts of the dossier have been verified. Some have not been. Some have been disproved.

Do you think every time a drug dealer’s house is raided on a search warrant that the druggies and criminals who have provided that info are 100% accurate? No. There is no legal standard that requires such a degree of accuracy.

              Btw: is this a crime?

              No quid pro quo!!!!

Just because Hillary pays a foreign spy to make stuff up about Trump doesn’t mean that stuff never happened. Maybe Trump does get peed on by Russian hookers. YOU CAN’T PROVE HE DOESN’T!!!11!
