The hot take I’ve been expecting.

Frankly, I’m surprised it’s taken this long to surface.

What I’m not surprised about is seeing Fields flourish in a system better suited to his skill set.  I hope Wolken’s not suggesting Kirby should have promoted Fields over Fromm last season.

    OSU’s offense is basically backyard football. “Go deep” and if nobody is open then the qb takes off. Justin throws a nice deep ball and is hell on wheels. Throw in zone read runs and it’s a great fit for him and OSU.

    What he’s not good at is reading defenses (yet), progressing, and accuracy in mid routes.

    I think he wins a Heisman at OSU. But I don’t think he’s a better fit for our offense.

      I just hope someone gets in his face eventually. I’m not for his success and stuff like the above is a big part of the reason why.

        As someone earlier this week mentioned, Wisconsin will probably start blitzing him the moment he steps off the bus. That game should tell us a little more about what he truly is.

    If we lose a game, you will be hearing it from some people on GTP. I’m going to wait til I see Fields against a D like Bama, Clemson or us before I decide who is a more effective QB.

    Honestly, this is the lowest hanging fruit of all low hanging sports columnist fruit. Leave aside for a moment that Ohio State still hasn’t really played a good team yet, I’m willing to stipulate that Justin Fields was put upon this earth to run the Ohio State offense. If you want to suggest that Georgia should be running the same offense that OSU does, I suppose you can have that debate but that isn’t what UGA wants to do on offense and I’d say what we are doing on offense works just fine. After seeing Justin Fields attempt to run a pro-style offense at Georgia last year, I have no doubts that Fromm is better suited to what we want to do than he is. Fromm is the better leader. Fields is an incredibly talented player, but Georgia has its quarterback. This year, no having Fields bothers me not one bit. Now, after Fromm leaves it might bother me more. I guess we’ll see. I wish Fields well.

    Not that I’m suggesting that he should have replaced what we have, but I knew we were losing something special and would have preferred he stay.

    But he gay married Sasser and Adam sacrificed himself for the relationship.

      Agree…unless there would have been a divided locker room if he stayed. Sure could have used him as a backup this year, or to step in when Fromm leaves.

        I know that position is different, but it shouldn’t be.

        No one worries that the building is gonna split because both Mays and Cleveland want to play right guard.

        Qb should be no different.

          “Qb should be no different” But it is. Most of the college football world knows who your starting QB is. I can name the starting QB for every top 10 10 team, but I can not name a single offensive lineman other than ours. For better or worse, the QB is the face and heartbeat of the team. We do not have a controversy played out in the media over whether Cleveland or Mays should be the starter. Every major CFB publication weighed in on Fromm vs Fields. It is what it is.

I will wait till he has played a team with a decent defense before I give him more credit than he happen to be Ohio States QB as the beat lesser opponents.

      A lot of Georgia fans are salty about the fact that he’s having success. Me? I just see him flourishing and wish there had been a way we could have kept him to be the starter in 2020. He’s a special player, no doubt aBout it.

          Michigan State should be an interesting game for them, looks like they have another top rated defense. Then you have Wisconsin, the look really strong on ‘D.

          Then there is Penn State, you know they will be fired up (decommitted)…that should also be interesting.

          If he can navigate all of that, he has earned it imo.

    Fields looked good against unranked teams last season too. That’s what really makes him fit into OSU’s system.

        I don’t hate Fields and I haven’t moved any goal post. What I did say was that Ohio State has a track record of producing QB’s with big numbers and almost zero success in the NFL.
        Both Justin and his dad have stated publicly that they want to get to the NFL end of discussion from this chair.

    I’m sure that is exactly what he is suggesting. Just throwing bombs, trying to sell some ads, get some clicks. That is what passes for sports journalism these days. If UDub wins the PAC 12 he’ll say the same about Eason. Doesn’t matter that both Eason and Fields couldn’t have been the starter at UGA at the same time either.

    I’ve been saying it consistently. I wouldn’t trade Jake Fromm for any of the “elite” QBs currently playing college football for what we want to do … run a spread pro-style offense.

    For Wolken (who I believe broke the Fields transfer story … I still think Fields should have kept his name out of the transfer portal until after the season or shouldn’t have gone to New Orleans), this is about generating clicks.

        Just having 11 guys on the other side of the line does not make a defense. They really have not played a defense. When they see Wisconsin, Penn State, (do they play Iowa), then we will see what he really is. If he lights them up, I will be the first to tip my hat and admit he can read a defense. He is now in his second season, so I would expect that he has improved. How much is the question?

          You don’t have to read a defense as OSU Quarterback. You look to the sideline for play calls and checks. Unless you mean go through his progressions as “read a defense” then yeah. I assume it means pre-snap – which is where he was vastly inferior to Fromm. OSU offense spares him that.

            Ahhh, so it always comes back to not being able to read a defense. IMO, with the talent he possess, he doesn’t need to be able to read defenses pre-snap in order to be successful. He is proving that now at OSU. ANow what Fromm does works for him, only if he has vastly superior athletes around him. Case in point, you take Scam Newton off of that 2010 team and put a “pre-snap defense reader” qb out there, that’s probably a 8-4 or 7-5 type team. Scam carried that team with his natural God given abilities to a title, not by reading defenses. And yes, I know Auburn is still a slimy program. But hey, it’s easier for many here to hate the kid, which I’m starting to believe some already had animosity towards him because he dared to challenge the never make a mistake qb Fromm.

                  I wasn’t spewing venom – just pointing out the differences between the systems. I’m not making a judgement about him reading a defense during a play (Going through his progressions). I’m just pointing out that he wasn’t as good as Fromm at reading a defense pre-snap (And he was a freshman! maybe he would have developed that part of his game with more time in the system). And that at OSU, he doesn’t have to read the defense pre-snap! I think it is one of the main reasons he is thriving there. If that were the case here in UGA’s offense, would have have won the job? Maybe – but that is not the offense UGA runs.

                  As far as people getting mad that he challenged Fromm – I dont know where you’re getting that. There was lots of noise in bulldog nation about wanting Fields to start, both preseason and after Fromm’s poor LSU performance.

    I think it’s justified.

    People want to believe that Fields can’t lead, read defenses, or throw with accuracy. But I see no actual evidence of that. He made lots of good decisions last night and threw lasers into tight windows. More tests to come, I get it.

    I’ll never blame Kirby for this situation. Fromm is obviously good enough to reach the mountaintop. But if I were a betting man, I think Fields would have increased UGA’s chances in 2019 and 2020.

    I think if Fields wanted to continue playing H.S. ball and rack up huge numbers and contend for the Heisman he should have never pick UGA. If he wanted to learn how to run a pro style offense he should have stayed.
    If he truly wants to play at the next level he might want to learn how to run routes and catch passes. History has not been kind to Ohio St. QB’s that put up gaudy numbers.

    If Fields continues to play as well as he has he and Ohio State should absolutely get credit for their effectiveness on offense. The purpose of a quarterback and offense is to score points not “learn how to read defenses” or “develop into a pro style QB”. If a coach like Ryan day develops a system where his qb and playmakers have fewer decisions to make and they still score a ton of points I’d call that good coaching.

    I know this is going to come as a shock to most people and their tribalistic mentalities but sometimes people just do better in different environments.

      College is one thing – if a player wants to go to the next level they need “learn how to read defenses”. Whats’s with the “tribalistic (sp) mentalities” it is a proven fact – learning how to operate a pro style offense has NOTHING to do with “tribes”.

        In regards to your sentence about going to the next level
        1) we’re talking about a college football player on a college football team, so it really doesn’t matter if Fields is a great pro QB, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s been a pretty effective college qb, which is WHAT HE’S BEEN TASKED TO DO. Just like I’m sure gator fans don’t discount their national championship because tebow flamed out as a pro
        2) there’s several examples of good pro style QBs who were unsuccessful in the NFL as well as successful QBs from simple college schemes. In the former: Aaron Murray, David Greene, Brady Quinn, Matt Barkley, Brandon weeden. In the latter: NFL mvp Cam Newton, first round pick from OSU Dwayne Haskins

        Lastly, my point about tribalism is there’s a bunch of guys who aren’t in the least bit objective solely because fields left UGA (thier tribe). Granted on somewhat messy and dubious circumstances

    According to Wolken, if our system isn’t suited for Fields, than our system is stupid. It’s worked to the tune of 2 division titles, an SEC championship, a Rose Bowl win, and a CFP title game appearance. Wolken can suck it with his clickbait.

    For those older fans if you haven’t been in a high school or college locker room the racist language used by Sasser is a everyday common word just about as well used as he’s my dog……. what some people see as racist others are making millions of dollars with rap music and it’s everyday common language.
    I attended a Clemson practice earlier in the spring and although I wasn’t or didn’t hear the WORD used by White coaches it was common place in drills by black coaches with black defensive linemen, while players with regularity did the same and they were white kids in the drills to. It’s just racial if you want to use it racially. It’s as common as “What’s sup Dude”…….in their, Our culture…………. it’s as common as the delicate way our politicians speak to each other it’s just about how you want to address such.
