You know, I get if you’re a Trump fan because you like his policies.  I even get (even though I think it’s pretty childish) if you’re a Trump fan because Own The Libs.

You know what I don’t get?  How you don’t see a cranky old dude with a screw loose when you read stuff like this:

Privately, the president had often talked about fortifying a border wall with a water-filled trench, stocked with snakes or alligators, prompting aides to seek a cost estimate. He wanted the wall electrified, with spikes on top that could pierce human flesh. After publicly suggesting that soldiers shoot migrants if they threw rocks, the president backed off when his staff told him that was illegal. But later in a meeting, aides recalled, he suggested that they shoot migrants in the legs to slow them down. That’s not allowed either, they told him…

“You are making me look like an idiot!” Mr. Trump shouted, adding in a profanity, as multiple officials in the room described it. “I ran on this. It’s my issue.”

I don’t think Grandpa Simpson needs any help in the looking like an idiot department.  Your mileage may vary, but damned if I can see why.

**********************************************************************

UPDATE:  I know this won’t make any difference to some of you, but what the hell:

Frustrated with a record number of people seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border this spring, President Donald Trump at one point asked in a private meeting with close aides whether the U.S. could shoot migrants below the waist to slow them down.

The account, first reported in a book excerpt released by the The New York Times on Tuesday, was confirmed to ABC News by a senior administration official who was in the room at the time, as well as several other sources who were later briefed on the conversation.

According to two sources familiar with the matter, Trump in private meetings raised the prospect of shooting migrant families seeking asylum at the border as early as November 2018.

At least you’ve got this going for you:  “In a tweet Wednesday, Trump denied the allegations about the trench and the electrified fence, but did not address the idea of shooting migrants.”

Logical policies? Good judicial appointments? It’s comments like these that make me feel like I live on a different planet from many of my fellow Americans.

I agree that the Clintons pursue a legal form of corruption in the form of influence peddling like all of Washington. That’s why I support major anti-corruption policies like those advocated by Warren. No Republicans support these measures nor have they put forward a different plan of how to address corruption. In fact, Mitch McConnel has hamstrung the FEC by refusing to but enough Commissioners on it for them to get to a quorum.

This doesn’t even mention the fact that Trump is being directly paid by everyone who wants to have any influence over him through his businesses. Listen to the Trump, Inc. podcast from Propublica. He is a total fraud and always has been.

The swamp is the swamp. The deep state has done quite a job protecting itself from Trump, as should have been expected.

I’m just questioning the logic presented. Is Trump increasing his net worth by 20% a bigger motivator than another politician increasing his by 2,000%?

I know and have worked with multiple folks who were on the creditor committees for the multiple Trump bankruptcies. To a man they confirm that the guy is a crooked incompetent scumbag who’s “business acumen” and net worth are grossly over exaggerated and any wealth is purely a function of daddy Trump giving him a sizeable amount to start with.

It’s not a coincidence that the only bank that will do business with Trump is Deutsche Bank, one of the worst offenders during the financial crisis and who has a century long legacy of corruption including money laundering, libor rigging and oh yeah financing the Holocaust.

Bottom line, Trump’s business accumen is another one of his litany of lies.

So what? Government isn’t business. Do you think Obama’s community organizing gave him any foundation in economics? Do you think Bernie Sanders, or Jeb Bush are capable of running a lemonade stand? Of course not.

But the point remains. Trump has a lot of money. More than most other people in politics. So it makes no sense to say that increasing his wealth by 20% would motivate him to break the law more than another politician capable of increasing his wealth by 2,000%.

The argument was that people were buying Trump off. With money. That argument is weaker against a rich person, like Trump, than against other politicians.

The post also assumed that the politicians could police themselves with some new anti-corruption, incumbent protection measures. I’m unconvinced.

This is a ridiculous argument for excusing rank and open corruption. Also, for Trump, like many rich people, money is not a means to material ends but rather a way of keeping score (who is winning which he is obviously obsessed with). He has also been shown to wildly overstate his actual wealth and has many properties like the one in Scotland that were really struggling prior to him becoming President. So his existing wealth was somewhat precarious leaving him very vulnerable to corrupt payments that might keep his entire organization afloat.

You’re arguing that since you don’t know what Trump’s wealth is, you’re justified in concluding that he is much poorer than he represents, and thus vulnerable to being corrupted by bribery. And if you’re wrong and he’s actually very rich, he doesn’t care about money, so he’s still liable to be corrupt. Very convenient for you.

We don’t make cheap sht that China wants to buy, so lets put tariffs on China’s cheap sh*t so we all pay more? Tax breaks that are piling onto the National Debt faster than during the Great Recession, but largely benefiting the rich? Taking us to the brink of war with Iran with absolutely no proof they were doing anything other than complying 2 years into a 10 year treaty? Judicial appointments for individuals who can’t even make it through a Republican-friendly nomination hearing? His policies have alienated the friends we did have, and we are back to playing world cop alone in the Middle East. Manufacturing investment has come to a halt, job growth is declining, all his tariffs are doing exactly what every rational economist predicted….

And you should look into the budget. In order to pay for the unfunded liabilities brought about by generations of profligate spending, we must seize every piece of private property in the country, sell it to China, and then do it again. But you still think we can tax our way out of debt?

And offering judicial appointees the rights of due process? Outrageous! If some woman claims that something happened at some time at some place that can’t be corroborated, or even remembered, why doubt her? Just because she’s a partisan leftist? Ridiculous!

Listen, I read Rush Limbaugh’s book, “The Way Things Ought to Be” like it was a bible in the early 90’s. I laughed along with him at the notion of Global Warming. I grew up in an area where they’d be covering plants with sheets starting next month on certain nights because of the temps. I ain’t seen a single sheet in a decade and it’s 95 degrees outside. A record 6 tropical storms at once this season, and the biggest one on record in it’s area of the Atlantic right now. It’s the new normal. The earth temp obviously fluctuates by degrees, but the swings are measured over millennia, not decades. I’m sure there were plenty of people who refused to believe the earth was round or that the heavens didn’t revolve around us when the science first came out. Trust overwhelming scientific consensus over politicians, always.

There was an ice age until 1850. You are correct that climate changes. But anecdotes like, “It seems to be hotter than I remember it being,” don’t support climate models.

There are no recorded increases in tropical storms. You’re just paying more attention.

Is warming happening? Probably. Is some measure of warming attributable to human activity? Very likely. Is the Earth going to “catch fire?” Of course not. Are the “solutions” politicians push to combat global warming worse than doing nothing? In most cases, yes.

But fine. Let’s say that we only have 12 years to live. What is your solution? How many millions, or billions, of people should die to prevent the Earth from “catching fire?”

Is any amount of guaranteed human death and suffering enough to give you pause to consider whether the predicted human death and suffering can be avoided in other ways?

Present your scientific evidence that you find worthy of countering the overwhelming preponderance of data.

My solution? We put our national resources behind modernizing our electrical grid and power storage systems, build/expand solar and wind farms nationwide, employ 10’s of thousands of people in expanding forests and other carbon-limiting projects across the US,…jesus man, the number of things we could do, all of which would also spur economic growth. I’m not claiming to be a visionary with the path we should follow, I just know doing nothing is beyond foolish.

Europe is getting away from solar and wind because it doesn’t work. Nuclear would, but government regulations make it more expensive. And modernizing is just nibbling around the edges.

If we’re talking about impending global calamity, does clean coal that could, possibly, reduce US emissions by 5% really fix anything? Of course not.

Actually fixing the climate, if such a thing were even possible, would cost money. Lots of money. As in, tens of trillions of dollars. And it also costs lives. People don’t just use oil to run their porn servers. They use oil to run hospitals, and trains delivering food, and to run refrigeration to keep food from spoiling, and to create and deliver medicine. But all of that suffers when we adopt more expensive and less efficient power sources. That means people suffer, sicken, and die.

Now, maybe you believe that killing 200 million now is better than possibly letting 500 million die in 100 years. The thing is, the 200 million you kill today is guaranteed. The future estimates aren’t. Maybe technology improves to the point that nobody would have died in 100 years. Doesn’t that make killing millions now a bad plan?

Here’s a source on the economics of various ideas, including doing nothing.

I’m curious to know what evidence doesn’t support that climate change is real and caused, at least in part, by humans. And if I’m not mistaken, this President doesn’t even believe it’s real. Also, isn’t it more like “hottest temperatures ever recorded” and not just “it seems warmer this year than I remember it being last year”.

And the “12 years to live” is an amusing talking point used to mock AOC, but there actually was a UN report last year which pointed to 2030 as a critical point at which climate change could become irreversible if action isn’t taken now.

To answer your question, although not directed at me, I don’t have a solution. But maybe a starting point would be for the President to listen to the scientists who are offering solutions (after admitting that climate change is real of course).

This is a report auditing the IPCC data. It identified 70 areas of concern. Some, like extrapolating for missing data, are understandable. Some, like reporting Fahrenheit temperatures as Celsius, are bigger problems.

The famous hockey stick graph from ClimateGate is part of the data problem. Garbage in, garbage out.

As I stated earlier, climate definitely changes. And the recent trends have been warming. But science by consensus is stupid. Humans play a part. But even the IPCC admits that the major greenhouse actors are clouds and water vapor. CO2 is a trace element in the atmosphere. Doubling the amount will increase the temperature by about 1 degree. And increasing it further will increase temperatures by lower and lower amounts.

And I don’t really think the president matters in climate change. Whether he believes in it or not shouldn’t matter. If money is to be made in batteries and solar power, let the market run wild. The technology will chase the profits. But politicians imposing 5-year plans has never worked out.

On the budget, simple question, why aren’t we paying down the debt then? Best economy in the history or histories, right?? Then why are we pilling on $1Trillion a year in debt? Why hasn’t he made getting our debt under control a priority, because he’s a myopic narcissist that doesn’t have the first clue about economic policy and he doesn’t have the humility to trust anyone who might tell him he’s wrong. He bankrupted casinos, not a casino, casinos as in plural. We can’t solely tax ourselves out of debt, but we could surely be doing more than whatever you want to call what he’s doing now.

The budget has absolutely nothing to do with Trump’s business acumen, or lack thereof. Given that government doesn’t respond to prices or demand curves, if Trump were a wonderful businessman, his skills wouldn’t help him.

Check out entitlements. FDR and LBJ implemented Social Security and Medicare. Bush kicked in Medicare D. These programs were actuarially bankrupt from inception. Now, baby boomers are retiring and the money spent on these programs are exploding.

Trump is continuing the Clinton/Bush/Obama wars in the Middle East. Those are expensive.

The Trump tax cuts lowered tax income by $1.5 trillion over 10 years. So if he had continued the prior tax policy, we could only be piling up $900 billion a year in debt. That doesn’t really sound like a solution. And keep in mind, even leftists admit that taxing over 20% of GDP is bad.

When the US budget is $4.4 trillion, Trump’s tax policy is talking about a difference 2% of the budget. It’s a rounding error. It’s nothing to get worked up about.

And yes. Trump is spending much more than he promised to. That makes him … a U.S. president. They literally all do that. Every president promises to do things they will not do. I see no point in getting worked up about it when one party does what both parties always do.

Such as working to level the massively tilted trade playing field with China, after 20 years of inaction by prior administrations. Such as trying to get control of our southern border (like, you know – every other country on earth controls theirs). Such as trying to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb.

I like the general thrust of his judicial appointments, because I think judges should do what the constitution says they should do, which is interpret the law, instead of what a lot of them are prone to do, which is legislate from the bench.

Totally agree, and they’ve got 117 Pulitzer Prizes to prove it. Which is about 117 more than Fox.

But since Fox is a broadcast outlet, has only been around since 1996, perhaps that’s an unfair comparison.

What about our dear old alma mater’s Peabody Award, the the oldest honor in electronic media? Fox has zero, which is 50 fewer than PBS. But, hey, Comedy Central has five, so chin up Fox!

But let’s say you’re that random Georgia alum who thinks Peabodys are “too elitist.” Cool. What about the News and Documentary Emmy Awards? There’s PBS leading the pack again with 88. Fox again with zero, one behind VH-1 (documentary involving adoption and rapper Darryl McDaniels from Run-D.M.C. fame).

Hm. Since there’s not a Pulitzer for broadcast, what about the broadcast equivalent, the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards? Stop me if you’ve heard this before, there’s PBS out front again with 23 and Fox again bringing up the rear with zero, behind Court TV (2) and Current TV (1).

Clearly some bias here. What about the George Polk Awards, which honors newspapers, magazines, television, radio and online news organizations? Fox: nada

Ok, ok, I’ve got it. The Gerald Loeb Awards were established in 1957 by the late Gerald Loeb to honor journalists who make significant contributions to the understanding of business, finance and the economy. Fox covers business so this has got to be a sweet spot, right? The usual suspects –New York Times and Wall Street Journal — dominate. CBS, NBC, and Bloomberg each have four Loeb awards, followed by CNBC with three, ABC with two, and CNN with one. Fox News Channel? Dang, zero again.

Sigh. Let’s try a couple more.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. CBS News leads with 25 Murrow awards. NPR news and ABC each have 11; NBC 10; the Associated Press seven; ESPN four; and three for CNN. Fox News? Zero.

      Ok, next?

The Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award honors those who report on issues that reflect Robert F. Kennedy’s concerns including human rights, social justice and the power of individual action in the United States and around the world. Hahahahaha, never mind.

The annual Investigative Reporters and Editors Awards recognize outstanding investigative work in several categories. NPR and CBS each have five; ABC and NBC have four each; Bloomberg and MSNBC have two each. Fox News Channel? Zero.

In literally thousands of at-bats to get some recognition in its profession, Fox News has struck out completely. If you spend a nanosecond of your time getting your news from Fox, it’s an utterly wasted nanosecond.

It’s just that so much of the reporting on him has turned out to be bullshit that if something fits too neatly into the “he’s a dangerous madman!” narrative, I doubt it.

This is the problem and why I’ve taken to mostly ignoring anything related to Trump. Which “basic democratic institutions” are being subverted? The non-stop criticism of Trump is insane. It’s not enough to say that this policy is bad or that idea is terrible or he’s embarrassing. No, he must be an existential threat to the very republic.

Because he is. He is now openly courting foreign countries to interfere in our elections. He is using the Justice Department as his personal lawyers. His entire administration has been stonewalling basic congressional oversight (e.g., refusing to show up for even run of the mill hearings) and now believes that they can ignore congressional subpoenas. I could go on. You can ignore what’s happening, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

I mean, other presidents have killed millions of people, put tens of thousands in jail for having the wrong political opinions or having inconvenient ancestry, and bankrupted the country by fundamentally transforming it closer to the leftist Utopia they envision. But tweeting insensitive things and/or appearing unpresidential is where we must draw the line!

Let me start by saying that I despise Hillary. She is pure evil and her bloviation exceeds the Senator’s by a country mile, but if you think for one second President Ouchiefoot isn’t as crooked as her you really know nothing about politics or Trump’s history of being a Grade A scumbag. There are reams of documented suits against him prior to being the Idiot in Command. Nearly a hundred alone where he outright stole from the every man and then leveraged his lawyers and tied up all the suits in court until it actually made it worse for the person getting screwed by him to continue legal action. He is truly deplorable. He shows his ass daily. And is a documented narcissist. He is our President, but I can think of 44 of them prior that didn’t make America weaker socially and dumber in the eyes of the world.

All that said the system is broken. Both sides don’t care about you or me. The sooner we all realize that, the easier it is sleep while the mayhem swirls around us.

The columnist who had significant dirt on his dealings with the Saudis.

And he’s for whatever his base is for. Remember his video from the 90s when he said if he’d ever run for President he’d run as a Republican because they’re stupid and will believe anything. I’m not slagging off Republicans, I’m saying the man has no moral compass. Only personal agenda.

        • The only one’s he’s playing like a fiddle are his supporters. The guy literally watches Fox and then rage tweets whatever will get them riled up the most. He has one mode: attack. He’s not some “stable genius” masterfully orchestrating events. He simply reacts. He is not capable of inspiring anyone or bridging differences. He doesn’t even try. He thrives in chaos and happily stirs that pot. As the GOP has morphed into the party of Trump many have left them (like me). It will be interesting to see how many are left to vote for him come election time. He snuck up on America in 2016 against a very flawed candidate. We will see how much buyer’s remorse there truly is. I suspect a lot as folks have witnessed his daily assault on dignity.

POTUS definitely needs a filter. He should wait an hour before he tweets also. But he is not a corrupt politician so he has that going for him… which is good. And he is actually trying to solve some of the country’s problems… many of which are antithetical to the establishment… which is evidently bad. What ever happened to the liberal counter culture who challenged big brother and the establishment?

In the mean time… What’s that commin down the track… It’s Barr and Durham and they are serious as a heart attack. No wonder the theft is apoplectic and doing everything they can to discredit them.

Would encourage everyone to read a quote on twitter from G.K. Chesterton which I think unfortunately describes where we are today as a country. You might also want to take another look at 1984. And please try and come to grips with the fact that the left is the new Ingsoc. If you can’t see that then there is no hope.

This all just makes me very sad. Even after Trump is long gone, the partisan media will remain and will continue to drive us into our respective corners while they rake in the money. The SCOTUS discussion was the same on the other side when Roberts and Gorsuch were appointed. They haven’t proved to be the conservatives friend as the media and left-wing thought they’d be. I would argue that you’d see the same types of appointments had Hillary been elected. Of course on the left side of the center.

Look, I hate Hillary and her showing up on CBS Sunday Morning reminded me again why. But, I don’t think she would have done any damage to the US, nor our allies.

There’s no war she’s not in favor of starting, or escalating. She even wants to go toe to toe with Russia. That’s real. Besides the trillions of dollars, the thousands of American lives, and the hundreds of thousands of foreign civilians killed, that kind of foreign policy makes us less safe by agitating hornets nests around the globe. Racism to expect people wanting to come here adapt to their new country and not us the? Racism to limit the number who come each year so as not to overwhelm the system? Racism to expect them to have a basic ability to speak the language so it does not cost business and government fortune to have to maintain forms and translators for multiple languages (no there is no official language, but what does the VAST majority of America speak as a primary language)? {Reads comments above} …And this is why I no longer bother discussing politics. It’s about as pointless as it can get. Trump fans defend him at no cost; Trump non-fans/haters/whatever bash him at no cost. Seriously, Trump could hold a PC today stating he hates America and hopes we all go to hell, and his supporters would cheer him on anyway. Or, he could hold a PC stating we are starting a new initiative to cure pediatric cancer, in which he would be donating his entire net worth to the project, and his detractors would find a way to assail him regardless.

On a personal level, my conservative friends think of me as a bed wetting liberal; my liberal friends think I’m a right wing loon. None of them will remotely consider that perhaps I’m balanced or middle of the road in my views while they are far to one side or another. Crazy.

Not a fan either. The market is NOT the enemy.

It’s rewards could be more fairly distributed so that future generations can benefit and have an opportunity to participate.

I don’t support the “it won’t be fair until we’re all poor” wing of the liberals any more than I support the money-based generational aristocracy that the republicans promote.

One ideology wants no rich folks and the other would lead to around 5. Neither is very attractive to me.

Yep. I personally came from little money but grinded (as did my wife) to get to where I’m at now with tons of sacrifice along the way, and finally we’re in a position after 20+ years of hard work that we individually and combined do quite well. Nothing lucrative making millions a year or anything, but enough to where we again are in the top 1-2% income wise and overall are in good shape.

But, around half of what we earn yearly goes to taxes; over half if you include what we pay in property taxes, sales taxes, and all the rest. So basically Jan 1st thru at least July 1st we are working for the gov; the rest of the year finally for ourselves. Thus when I hear Sanders and his ilk harp on how we aren’t ‘paying our fair share’ and need to pony up even more, yea…it makes me bristle a bit. Especially when something like 30% of wage earning Americans pay no federal income taxes whatsoever and/or receive EITC’s.

With that said, the two best ways to ensure future generations are afforded equal economic opportunities are: 1. Espouse the importance of a two parent household; ideally with a mom and dad present. 2. Equal access to quality education regardless of geography. Unfortunately, we are doing neither. If you grow up in a two parent household, graduate HS and not have kids until you’re married, the chances that you end up being poor, committing crimes or being a violent crime statistic is almost nil.

Absolutely. According to the IRS, in 2016, the top 50% of income earners paid 97% of all the taxes. The bottom 50%, meanwhile, paid just 3%. The top 1% alone earned 17% of all income yet were responsible for 37% of all taxes collected. Call me biased, but I’d suggest that the top, say, 5% are paying far more than their fair share as it is. Sadly, politicians can continue to blatantly lie about the wealthy needing to pay their ‘fair share’ or a need for higher taxes because, 1: most Americans are ignorant of the above stats, and 2: they very well might be in the lower 50% group paying no taxes, so they couldn’t care less if you raise the top tax rates to say, 80% if desired.

I grew up broke, single mom and still ended up about where you are.

Our main problem with taxes is that we’re not rich enough. It’s when you start making Mitt Romney money then you can get that marginal rate down to 15% or less.

As far as fixing what’s broke my plan is two-fold:

              1) any person from the ages of 15 to 24 will be doing something. Education, work training, military, something. Sitting around selling drugs, jacking folks up and burglary will not be an option any longer.

              2) end the drug war. So long as people see easier money in drugs than in working we’re going to have worse and worse poor folks.

Those two plans will solve a ton of ills.

Unfortunately, we have a “welfare state” or “entitlement system” or “unfunded liabilities” or social security, Medicare, etc…., whatever your bumper sticker is that people want so one party wants to starve the government of the funds necessary to make them feasible. They want to say: “Medicare is fine and all but you know we’re just broke. Sorry.” That’s just wrong and it’s evil.

The rich have bought this country and opted out of responsibility for it and set poor people of different stripes against each other to fight over the scraps.

It’s wrong and it’s un-American. This is why I HATE Republicans.

              It’s not because I’m a leftist ideologue.

Well said and I agree with most of your points. However, when you look at all the socioeconomic, crime, etc. data available, the #1, undisputed factor that determines your success in life comes down to whether or not you grew up in two parent household. Even Obama, to his credit, stated this earlier on in his presidency, while most of his counterparts coward away from taking a position as to not to offend their constituents.

Simply put, kids who grow up in a stable family with mother/father are far, far more likely to succeed than kids that grow up in some sort of a single mom or out-of-wedlock upbringing.Of course that doesn’t mean that single parent kids can’t succeed or that two parent kids won’t fail, but the odds are overwhelming good/bad each way. Yet when is the last time you heard any politician say anything about the importance of family and sticking together? Hell, most refuse to even address the topic.

For example, black American families with a married mom/dad have a far higher income and overall net worth, along with a much higher % of their children who attend/graduate college than white households that are single or broken in some capacity. Indian-American families, for example, have the highest % of intact/married families of all ethnic groups, and no surprise they lead the country in terms of average income (Asians, FYI, are #2).

Focus on the family and make education a top priority, and the chances are great that you/your kids will turn out just fine. Asians and Indians figured this out a long time ago and are absolutely killing it as mostly new arrivals in the U.S. as first/second generation Americans.

I’m just not sure other than lip service that the government can do anything about that.

The best thing that ever happened to me was my parents divorce but I understand that I may unique.

Ultimately though unless you can get young girls to make better choices of mates and/or birth control choices, divorce/children out of wedlock is going to be a problem.

You and I may know that getting married and having kids before your late 20’s is likely a bad idea, because you’re more than a decade past puberty it’s a bit of a lost cause.

The reason the two parent family was the norm previously wasn’t government policy but more had to do with the fact that women had far fewer choices.

This freedom for women is a relatively new phenomenon. I’m sure it will sort out eventually.

                Genius plan.
                1) Make selling drugs, robbery, and burglary illegal.
                2) Make selling drugs legal.

Why hasn’t anyone thought of this? It’s completely logically consistent. It will cure what ails us. Then, we adjust property rights and liberty to a sliding scale based on how rich you are.

It’s only practical. It’s TOTALLY not based on a naive and ignorant world view coupled with class envy and a lack of fundamental understanding of the world beyond what a middle schooler learns.

Totally agree. And this NYT piece perfectly illustrates the depths to which politics has plunged. Instead of two sides attempting to govern based on healthy compromise backed by principles, politics is now tabloid clickbait where success is judged by the degree to which you can generate righteous indignation from one side or another.

  22. Forget about your opinion of Trump for a second. Is this an opinion piece? I don’t see it labeled as such. The NYT deserves every criticism they get about witch hunts and all that when they write shit like this:

“Mr. Trump’s order to close the border was a decision point that touched off a frenzied week of presidential rages, round-the-clock staff panic and far more White House turmoil than was known at the time. By the end of the week, the seat-of-the-pants president had backed off his threat but had retaliated with the beginning of a purge of the aides who had tried to contain him.”

This is supposed to be NEWS – tell me the facts about what happened and let me form my own opinion on whether it should be considered “frenzied,” “turmoil,” “panic,” etc. Calling him “the seat-of-the-pants president” destroys all credibility, and I don’t blame the posters above for dismissing the article almost immediately.

Outside of that though, I absolutely do see a cranky (and crazy) old man with a screw loose. What truly boggles my mind is how he’ll go on TV or twitter and say something, then later he’ll go on and deny that he ever said it as if there was no readily available evidence to refute that denial. Truly insane.

I also think it’s really shameful how far each side will go to attack the other and defend their own. And although you didn’t ask about for policy opinions, I disagree with the majority of Trump’s positions, especially when it comes to climate and the environment, but I can put my disdain for him aside enough to agree with him on some things, like sanctuary cities and one or two other things.

The best way (possibly only way) to save our Republic is with term limits.
POTUS – One 6 year term. Plenty of time to work on improving a good things not enough time to fuck everything up.
Senate – Two 4 year terms (no more public service or lobbying)
House – Two 3 year terms (no more public service or lobbying)
Limiting POTUS term would negate the need to spend two years trying to get reelected.
Senate term limits would keep us from having to endure the likes of Schumer and McConnell – both with too much power.
The House – no Nadler or Schift for life would be wonderful. Pelosi too.

  40. I’m a reasonable person, not some blind zealot, but I simply don’t trust many of the so-called news media outlets to report things in an objective and unbiased way. I’m not convinced this stuff has been truthfully and accurately reported, because since the day the 2016 election results were tallied, there has never been one iota of positive or supportive information printed about this president, who is actually trying to fulfill his campaign promises, unlike every other politician who has ever resided in the White House.
I do not like the way President Trump delivers his messages many times. He says or tweets things that piss people off many times and I wish he wouldn’t. However, I agree with many things he is trying to do for the country.
I just wish he would go about it in a better way sometimes.
When these screw-ups happen, I have to keep reminding myself that he is not a politician, and he really has no concept of how everyone in the Washington D.C. club expects him to operate, nor does he care.
He is a CEO, a business man, and was elected to try and change the D.C. status quo. Millions voted for him hoping he would be different than those before him.
    Mission accomplished.
They, the embedded Washington elite, expect him to conform to the old “go along to get along” way of doing things.
Hate to tell you, but that just ain’t in his DNA I don’t believe.
Oppose him or support him…love him or hate him…he has gotten a lot of things done in his first term, and every aspect of the economy is doing great, which is benefitting a large percentage of this country.
No, not every single demographic’s life has improved, and that is unfortunate.
For someone to say this fact could be changed or fixed by some other politician promising everything for everybody, is a very naïve and dangerously myopic view of how the world, and more specifically our nation, works economically.
Socialist ideologies cannot be realized at the expense of the eradication of capitalism in this country. I, and I suspect most of you, would not have the jobs we have, the homes we live in, the cars/trucks we drive, etc. without capitalism.
Tens of trillions of dollars, the amount necessary to “pay” for this fantasy of free this and free that promised by now every single Democrat candidate, and added to an already bloated federal budget deficit, would simply throw our entire nation into a depression, a death spiral from which we would never recover. Meanwhile, the ultra-rich, otherwise known as the top 1%, as well as every single major corporation, would simply pack up and leave the country for greener pastures. You know who would be left behind?
    Us, that’s who.
Us, the lower, average, and upper echelons of the middle class.
This unfortunately would place those of us remaining here squarely on the hook for the absolutely insurmountable tax burden created by these strategic plans.
But here’s the fatal flaw in the democratic party’s genius plan…
ALL OF US, you know…including those of us that either cannot afford or are unwilling to pack up and leave the country…the home we cherish…will be the ones to have to pay for this insanity. The problem is, all of us combined would never be able to generate enough income to pay the taxes we would each owe.
Even if we forfeited every single dollar we made through taxation, we would never come close to paying for these idiotic ideas.
Now, you may be just fine with all of this. You may hate Trump so much that you’re willing to give up everything you have just to get him out of office.
Not me. I’m going to vote for Trump again. Even at his worst, he is better than the alternatives we, as Americans, have to choose from next year.
So, if you plan on voting Democrat in 2020, good luck with the slate you have to pick from.

Utopia does not exist, my friends. Never has, never will.

First, it’s inaccurate to say that nothing positive has been written/said in the media about this President. Conservative-leaning organizations such as Fox News have been pumping sunshine about him all along, with a few exceptions.

Second, I think it’s overly generous to characterize all of his “screw-ups” as a result of him simply not being a seasoned politician. He’s never going to be a great orator, but if you flub a statistic or something once, you can say it was an honest mistake. If someone corrects you and you continue to say things that are false, then it seems like intent to deceive.

And Clinton used his uncle to get deferments. And Sanders applied as a conscientious objector when he wasn’t one, because he knew the clock would run out before his appeal could be heard and he would be drafted. All of the people above, except Ali, played the system (legally) to get out of going to war.

But tell me how much worse the R-guy is than the D-guys who did exactly the same thing. It makes you sound so smart.

Trump has shown me that people want to live in their victim fantasy world of make believe. They want to believe that some brown transgender Muslim bogeyman is going to show up at their house and take their guns and car keys. And in that fantasy world, no amount of real evil will ever seem as bad as the imaginary evil living in their heads.

Which is how the Devil tricks otherwise well meaning Christians. They rationalize their support of “the lesser evil” and lose sight of the fact they chose evil. Jesus was really clear He would never ask us to make that choice.

I understand people who oppose some Democratic policies. I do too. But if you do so on moral grounds, you have to – HAVE TO – list a ton of things Trump and his minions are doing.

This is how the Devil tricks otherwise well meaning Christians – he gets them to believe there are only two choices, a lesser evil and a greater evil. And to lose sight of the fact that they are choosing evil.

Trump throws out that bait almost daily on his Twitter feed. And people lap it up.

    Sad.

I’m a Christian and a conservative/ libertarian and I think what I find absolutely appalling is the extent to which evangelicals have whole heartedly embraced Trump. These people are enthusiastically supporting a serial adulterer and con man who bragged on camera about sexually assaulting women. A guy who ran on a message ofhate and divisiveness if not the outright persecution of the disenfranchised like the gay, black and transgender community.

Support the military? Trump lied to dodge the draft and wants to divert military funds for a project that he couldn’t get congressional approval for.

Support a balanced budget? Isn’t that a bedrock of conservatism? Why are we cheering on a guy who’s budget is only accelerating our deficit? Who on camera stated that it’s “no longer going to be his problem” when the bill comes due.

Why is free speech only ok when it’s something I agree with but if a football player engages in the completely disrespectful practice of kneeling (u know what I occasionally do when I pray) to exercise his constitutionally guaranteed right we should fire the guy.

I could go on and on but the hypocrisy and false doctrine being pedaled is outrageous.

Well, since you brought me up, I’ll pitch in. I agree with much of what CD wrote. Politics is the lesser of evils and evangelicals have embraced the concept. The problem is that elections aren’t held between a righteous candidate and the other guy. Both candidates are usually two sides of the same coin.

Trump was a serial adulterer. Hillary handled the “bimbo eruptions” from her husband’s serial adultery.

Trump bragged about women letting him grab them. BTW, that’s not sexual assault. Hillary’s husband was credibly accused of sexual assault by at least three women, who again fell under Hillary’s wrath.

The nonsense of persecution of blacks and gays is just that. It’s just class warfare. Sure, Republicans won’t actually lay out any policies of persecution, but we good people understand what the deplorables mean when they’re not saying what we know they’re thinking. wink wink

Trump avoided the draft. So did Hillary’s husband. So did Biden. So did Sanders.

Trump is accelerating the deficit. Nobody running plans to lower the deficit. The Democrats main complaint about Trump’s budgets are that they don’t spend enough. Warren wants to spend $70 billion a year on federal day care. Every Democratic candidate in the field is trying to promise more free stuff than the guy beside him. That raises deficits.

Republicans are hypocrites. Yep. So are Democrats. You can either vote for the lesser of two evils, or you can stay home. It’s the hypocrites that can convince themselves that their party/candidate is righteous. Some of those hypocrites are evangelicals. Some are atheists. Some are conservatives and some are liberals.

On the conversation about parenting and the child’s outcome, I’ll just say that kids need both a strong father figure and a strong mother figure present most every day during childhood. If gay couples can simultaneously fill both roles, fine. I just think it takes at least one of each role, who work together, whether they are under the same roof or not, to raise a child. One parent’s love-guidance isn’t enough. I know divorced fathers who see their kids more than some who are married to their mother. Just my two cents.
