Something is happening here and you don’t know what it is. Do you, Mr. Emmert?

Matt Gaetz is one of the more conservative members of Congress, a full-throated supporter of the POTUS.

Matt Gaetz also posted this.

When you’ve got polar opposites like Gaetz and Sherman on the same side of an issue like player compensation, you ignore current politics at your peril.  Which, come to think of it, is exactly what I expect the NCAA to do.

Emmert and the NCAA are committing suicide. Personally, I’m fine with that.

I can’t imagine any conservative being against an internal free market (i.e. a free market within a country). Now that both parties are on board, it’s only a matter of time. The NCAA waited too long. They will be told what to do. At some point, they may even be broken up due to the anti-trust laws. Unfortunately, rarely have those laws been inforced in the last 40 years.

The NCAA will not look the same in 5 years as it does today. We may actually see conferences having more power than the NCAA by that time… depending of course, on how all the new laws and lawsuits play out.

The NCAA has hidden behind the “but what about the volleyball player” too long. However, its gonna be interesting when they open up endorsements and some volleyball player sues under title 9 because she ain’t getting a piece of the pie.

    • It certainly will, since outside endorsements aren’t within the scope of Title IX enforcement.

But you know the NCAA is gonna try and mess with this and control the endorsement money thru a trust or other vehicle. Then the argument will be made that the revenue is. It may not get anywhere, but then again…

I agree if it was just Joe’s Toyota writing a check to Tommy Tailback….NCAA can’t let it be that simple.

Hmmm. I wonder if any attorney will bring suit anyway?

Prolly not. Lawyers never do that.

I am sure the volleyball player that makes money on her NIL will be much happier under that system. Under the system now, most will never make a penny from their volleyball skills. Under the system that is coming, a few will be able to make money off their NIL due to volleyball during the only time in their life that opportunity will be there… in their college years.

Well you certainly can’t question these guys judgment:

Seem pretty thoughtful and circumspect to me.

Wait…I heard this was a liberal idea since the Senator was in favor of it. I’m so confused now.

    T. Boone Pickens passed away recently, which is a shame for potential Oklahoma State recruits, because T. Boone was known to donate millions of dollars to OK State football; and surely under the NLI freedoms that are coming down the track, a lot of that would’ve gone to players.

But IMO there are a few other T. Boones out there who’ll be more than willing to shell out megadollars to athletes, instead of giving that money for upgrades to stadiums or locker rooms or whatever. Much more money than whatever might be flowing to athletes under the table now will be slapped on top of the table in the future.

So if y’all say you’re OK with that, fine. I myself am not OK with it. I’d be OK with some sort of controlled, regulated system in which athletes could be fairly compensated for NLI…like maybe, the local Ford dealer can’t pay the star football player any more than they’d pay an actor (not a real person) for the same commercial…but no one seems to be considering a proposal like that.

I agree that it should be regulated in some way, but I don’t have confidence in the NCAA to do that effectively. I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think they even have a uniform method for how schools calculate their COA stipend.

Meanwhile the coaches get rich under the current system without putting their bodies at risk so it is fair for management to get rich or be paid what the market decides but the student athlete who puts his body at risk should not be compensated due to amateurism smh At the reasons that kids should be denied compensation-it will not destroy the college atmosphere if the kids get paid.

To be fair, a vast majority of those coaches previously their bodies at risk under the current rules. Possibly more at risk prior to the tightening of the contact rules.

Bribery would still be illegal; IANAL, but I assume there could not be “here’s $20k for signing with LSU” transactions. Payments would have to be for services rendered, whether that be endorsements, appearances, etc.,. Maybe that’s not a great distinction, but there would be a fair amount of daylight, at least more than there is now…..

If the boosters are shelling out cash, I’d rather they pay for a Cam Newton than sleeping pods in the locker room.

How ironic, liberals are all for less regulation and consensual commerce when there’s no money or votes to sway their opinions. Common sense is a funny thing

Oh the horror! Anybody got a barf bag ?

Let Justin Fields go play for the Baltimore Brigade for a year , then get back to me on the value of his name and likeness, and then report to me what his draft prospects are. And then tell me how he’s going to pay for a college education when his Brigade career is over.

OK, then force Ohio State to only use the students who show up on campus each fall to build a team, no more recruiting. Get back to me on the value of the team then.
These players have huge value. They have absurdly rare skills. They should be able to make money off their skills. This is America, not communist Russia.

Why force Ohio State to do anything ? Both sides have alternatives yet they choose each other – Everyone gets a fantastic deal !

But to answer your question, if the top 200 prospects or each year chose a different path to NFL , I’m pretty sure Ohio State and all the others would still print money. Why ? Emotional connection of the alumni to the school. We don’t love college football because of the high quality of play. It’s not even the highest quality of play available to us. Sunday football is, obviously. But we choose to watch a weaker brand and love it – because of the name on the front of the jersey !

It’s probably more of a vent. The whole comment about the rich old white guys and poor abused black guys just doesn’t ring true. It’s about the best case of win win that I know of. But we all have to complain about our own lot , so I guess I get it in that light.

Society has come to a place where Is no longer an offense against social mores to besmirch “old white men”. It appears to me to be both ageist and bigoted. I see examples of it far more often then I’m comfortable with.

There are plenty of female presidents, chancellors & administrators who are enjoying the current set up. I haven’t seen any of them come out and complain and speak up for the student athlete.
