Your 10.30.19 Playpen

Okay, let’s get incendiary here:  give us your Cocktail Party weekend recommendations!  Go on, rub it in the faces of everyone who bitches about Jacksonville, playing a game in Jacksonville, the travel, the weather, the unfairness of it all, etc.

I’ll start.  Don’t go to Amelia Island without eating once at T-Ray’s.  Just don’t.

And with that, you folks have at it.

  1. Southern Soul BBQ in St. Simon’s of course. Also have a nostalgic love for Brogan’s, if for no other reason than to text folks to tell them I am there to let them know I’m very likely drunk.

Joe, after living on St. Simons for seven years I can honestly say I visited Brogan’s exactly once. And that was during my first two weeks there. Mostly a tourist/fratboy spot and a good place to get in a fight. You can’t beat SSBBQ. For seafood I like Crabdaddy’s first and Half Shell after that. Palmer’s for breakfast/brunch. If you like bagels try Sandy Bottom Bagels. The best fried shrimp you’ll ever eat are up in Darien at B&J’s. However, residents mostly stock up and try not leave the house from Wednesday to Sunday.

    • I love Southern Soul. If I’m anywhere close to SSI, I have to find an excuse for a stop.

I wish UGA could get them for the Sanford BBQ contract as opposed to that place from Alabama-stan.

I like the Chart House in Jax. But if you take the river taxi, watch out for that extremely drunk, foul-mouthed reptilian bitch in the Tebow jersey.

  9. We’ve been staying in Ponte Vedra for nearly 2 decades and have always gone to Barbara Jean’s the night before the game. We also go to Mayport in Jacksonville Beach for fresh seafood. Usually get a bunch of shrimp and other things for snacks or low country for the tailgate.

    • For folks who say Jacksonville is a dump, they have likely never been to PVB. There are a bunch of places that are good … Palm Valley Fish Camp and Graham (sp) McDowell’s place (Nona Blue) right outside Sawgrass come to mind.

I live in PVB and absolutely love it. In general, the beaches in Jax are great. Jax Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach all have lots of good food and bars. Valley Smoke is newer in PVB and has excellent BBQ and hundreds of whiskeys. It’s right next to Palm Valley Fish Camp. Also very close by is a new spot V’s pizza and a bar next store called Julep, also with a huge whiskey selection. That area of PVB is really blowing up.

      • We may have come across each other at BJ’s before. Yeah, Fish Camp is good. We enjoy making a relaxing vacation and that’s why we take a week and come to PV. Family watches the kids and it’s usually the only vacation my wife and I can take with just the 2 of us.

        • I can’t remember of the place on the south bank of the river at Mayport (close to the ferry). Fresh fish to take home and cooked items that probably were pulled out of the ocean that day. Really good.

Flying your own aircraft into KSSI (regardless of time of year) and walking across the street to Southern Soul is magical. The only bad thing about being a private pilot is not being able to drink the Saturday of the game (or staying over till Monday).

With that said, there’s a certain satisfaction of waking up Sunday morning after a win feeling great – while everyone looks like extras in some zombie apocalypse movie – and hopping in your plane for a quick flight home with no traffic or general hassles.

If you’re on SSI, hit up Frosty’s Griddle and Shake, where the Dairy Queen was near the village. Outstanding burgers, fried chicken, and shakes. Sal’s Pizza is amazing, but will be completely swamped, like everything else. Check out Porch for ‘Nashville Hot’ chicken and catfish, just outside of the village.

BTW these food and bev recommendations are great. Not going to the game but go down every summer and nice to have a lengthy list of new food options.

  18. If you’re looking for a great steak and a nice atmosphere, I suggest Chophouse Thirteen in Mandarin. It was formerly known as The Tree Steakhouse and Oak Bar. They rebranded but kept the menu intact. Right nearby is the Comedy Zone, which is a great club to visit after a good meal. If you’re looking for a unique bar experience, visit The Volstead. It’s an old school speakeasy with great ambiance.

In the 80s, I form-tackled a gator into a table at Bennigan’s in Jacksonville. He had been rather unruly. Bartender thanked me and asked me to help throw him out. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

This past weekend, Fowler and Herbstreit were calling their game and suddenly, Lady Herbstreit began to bemoan the absence of old rivalry games. Texas versus Texas A&M, Oklahoma versus Nebraska. Etc. he then – without a hint of irony – called upon college presidents to do a better job of preserving rivalries.

Non food SSI question. Is there a place on SSI where one can buy UGA gear? Golf shirts and such.

Ahhh, Bennnigan’s. I remember being rather unruly myself there a few times back in the day. Never got form tackled though.

Favorite meal of my life was at the Hooter’s at the Landing, but only because I was hanging out with the Georgettes, and ended up sharing a plate of fries with my future wife.

      Ha! Forgot about that place.

One year, there was side entrance to a storage closet that was (sadly for them) unlocked. My buddy went in and got every ridiculous bandana, t shirt, golf shirt, visor, he could carry and outfitted the lot of us. It was kinda like Mardi Gras beads in that we threw them all away the next morning when we woke up.

Been here at Amelia since Sunday night. Ate at Lagniappe last nite, great food but pricey. Met two great football fans on the beach today: a guy from the Northeast, a Syracuse booster, former football coach, who likes Southern football because it’s “religion;” also, the dad of Hairy Dawg. Gotten a bunch of Go Dawgs from other fans, poolside, grocery store, everywhere.

Small “Sandcastle” eatery near the SSI pier. Right in the Village. Go for lunch…ask for the fried flounder fillet…get the cabbage with it. Leave happy and you didn’t even spend much $$…
Right in Darien is B&J’s. If you know anyone that has ever eaten there, then you’ve heard about it. Blue collar…doesn’t look like much from the street but don’t worry…it’s the best seafood you will ever eat.
