Boy, talk about an existential crisis for some of you…
President Barack Obama is coming out against compensation for college athletes.
He says it would lead to bidding wars and “ruin the sense of college sports.”
LOL.
I’m here for you if you don’t know which way to turn now.
Well, he also just condemned woke cancel culture, so i’m sure the panic cuts both ways. (not saying for you, just generally)

I’d be curious to read the full interview and get his complete thoughts on this. The ESPN article linked pulls a partial quote from a non-linked story that supposedly came from Huff Post. Searching around Huff Post and I don’t find any article or interview. Not saying those aren’t his thoughts, but he’s smarter than that, whether you agree with his politics or not.

People can have independent thoughts. They don’t have to think one way because they are “smart,” and people with the counter opinion aren’t dumb.

I think you made an excellent point and I’d reserve judgment as well. That ESPN article also states that he’s against players being banned for getting tattoos or free use of a car while the NCAA and coaches make bank, so I suspect there’s some nuance to his position.

That was my take from his statement. In my mind, when he says compensation, he’s referring to a free for all of dollars. Read contracts, endorsements, etc. I think he would say there is a middle ground between ruining college sports and taking care of student athletes.

huh? he said what he said. why can’t we just take it as that?

there was definitely context in the sentence and in the article. the context was discussing payments of athletes.

Because I’ve seen how clickbait on the internet works. And I know enough about Obama to suspect that he has a more nuanced understanding of this issue.

i just read the entire article. i see nothing that indicates he feels any other way than the athletes shouldn’t be paid.

While I don’t know you or Obama, I can say with good certainty that you know enough about Obama of the side he wants you to know.
ALL these political figures, celebrities and talking heads show you, and me, what they want us to see and try and micro control everything else that comes out of their mouths and the way they are portrayed to the outside world.
The snippet while maybe not completely in context is about as honest as anything else that comes form Washington or Hollywood. Just like ALL other politicians we need to know who he was talking to, if Emmert he would be against the SA getting paid, if to the SA he would be all in for them getting paid. Don’t think I am bashing Obama on this EVERY politician is this way.

Never let facts get in the way of good propaganda, huh? All libs are on the dole, huh? Nevermind that most “blue” states are net givers to the federal treasury (contribute more than receive) and that most “red” states are net takers from the federal treasury (receive more than they contribute). Maybe, just maybe, some of us can BOTH: (1) make a little money; and (2) realize that paying our fair share leads to a better society. Nah, probably not. Probably all “libs” are “on the dole” (nice use of English english, anachronistic slang – makes your reactionary views sound a little more cultured).

Red state vs blue state observations are so absurd
Just because Georgia voted Trump, doesn’t mean it’s a “red state”. It means 50% + 1 of votes cast were won by Trump. The same can be said of a “blue state”.
Reducing people to an avatar of some political tribe is reductio ad absurdum ad infinitum
LikeLike
I would agree that most of the “red states” are probably 51/49 propositions. But “blue states” like California (where I am) are more like a 70/30 split. That explains, in part, the disparity between the “popular vote” and the electoral vote; a large majority of the “blue state” voters vote blue but a close majority of “red state” voters vote red.

On average, red states are much more reliant on federal money than blue states.
Also, on average, federal money is a significant portion of state revenues — about a third. That figure was stable at about a quarter for decades but jumped after the Great Recession.

In any case, I agree with Normaltown Mike about avoiding reductive, tribal thinking.

HIGHer population density (your point) would lead to HIGHer receipts from the federal treasury, presuming similar per capita receipts. But that doesn’t happen – the per capita “take” is lower in the blue states. You can’t just use the higher population/higher pay argument on one side of the ledger, while ignoring it on the other.
Math is hard. Or, to paraphrase dawgtired, perhaps common sense is not so common.

Eh I’d argue that an area that attracts high paying jobs and employers drives demand for housing and commercial real estate and tax revenue not the other way around. High COL areas are high COL because people either 1) want to live there and/ or 2) that’s where all the high paying jobs are. My family members who live in BFE Georgia don’t understand why people in my industry live in NYC as opposed to 2500-3000 square feet of pulte home cookie cutter house in their neck of the woods. It’s because there are a ton of high paying jobs in NYC; winder ga, not so much. Even a house big enough to raise a family and with a decent school district in Marietta or Alpharetta will set you back $500k now.

I appreciate that you consider seizing some amount of another’s wealth to be your “fair share.” It sounds so much nicer than “theft.”

I make a lot; I pay a lot in taxes. I do consider that to be my fair share.
At the same time, I understand that as a high wage earner, I pay a disproportionately high amount of my income in taxes as opposed those who make the same via capital gains – and I disagree with that policy.
See – it’s possible to get beyond “taxes bad” versus “soak the rich.”
Your mileage may vary.

It’s certainly possible for “nuanced” thinking to justify all kinds of bad behavior. As children, most of us are taught that it’s wrong to take what doesn’t belong to us. As adults, we rationalize that wealth gained by wages is different than wealth gained by investment, so taking capital gains away from other people is justified.
Sometimes first principles can go beyond slogans.
LikeLike
Hmm. It’s really not that nuanced. I’m saying that wages and capital gains should be taxed the same way. They currently are not. I’m not sure how that leads to your waxing poetic about rationalizing. If I am advocating that both be treated the same way, how am I rationalizing that they are different?
If your position is no taxes on anyone, cool. I disagree, but fair enough.

I’m too lazy to track down the link but wall street journal published an article recently outlining the fundamental differences between red and blue voters. They did it by district not states. Long story short blue districts are commanding a larger percentage of gdp than even ten years ago and are getting wealthier and more educated on a per capital basis. Red districts are having a hard time attracting high paying skilled labor jobs due to a lack of educated labor force and little population density, as a result its constituents (generally lower skill, lower educated workers) are the most vulnerable to globalization in contrast to the blue districts which largely stand to benefit from globalization.

I would selfishly want college football to not change, but I don’t have the right to tell other people that they are not entitled to whatever compensation they can get. The players should try to get all they can, the coaches certainly do.

A progressive socialist speaks out against an individual’s ability to rise to their greatest economic potential…while making gobs of money writing books and private speaking engagements which is the essence of marketing one’s NIL rights.
Still waiting for a cogent argument on the subject that begins with the honesty of “It’s OK for everyone else to make money off of the star student athletes, just not them…”. I also welcome the counter argument of “As leaders of higher education fostering a complete and comprehensive academic environment which includes competitive sports, we will henceforth not profit off of the use of star student-athletes NIL’s…”.

Also, I’d be curious to read the HP interview noted (wasn’t linked in the article) to understand if he was generalizing on compensation or if he was asked a direct question (e.g. was he against schools compensating players).
Of course, I could also be reading too much into this and it was just a post to generate discussion in the comments section. In which case, well done. 🙂
