LA LA LA LA LAH! He can’t hear you!

Sure, Kirbs.  Whatever you say ($$):

Georgia assistant coaches were making a triumphant walk to the press box elevator Saturday night when one of them, tight ends coach Todd Hartley, couldn’t help but make an observation in the direction of the media.

“Lotta quiet people up here!” he said, repeating it in case the meaning wasn’t clear.

Of course, you can’t control what your assistant coaches say in the immediate aftermath of a big win… oh, wait.

“Oh, you’ve got to. If you don’t run the ball in this league, pass rushers will chew you up. When they see pass every play, they’ll feast. It’s like sharks in the water. They’ll attack you. You’ve got to keep them honest. You’ve got to wear them down. I know y’all don’t believe in it and y’all think it’s boring and y’all hate it and it’s not explosive, I get it, okay. But in this league, you’ve got to have the threat of that in order to sustain. And look, we have not arrived. We have to get better. There are a lot of things we have to work on and we’ve got some really tough teams coming up to play and that’s what I reiterated to our guys.”

“It shows that Dawg Nation is all in. There were some tough ebbs and flows in that game, their fans got back in it, our fans got back in it. But that’s what it is. It’s a helluva rivalry game. I’m just proud of the support that our fans provided for us, even if they did think Jake couldn’t throw the ball.”

Look, I’m not gonna crack down on Smart for taking a victory lap.  It was a big win in a big game and he had his team ready to play.  But I will say this:  if it took scrutiny from the media and the fans to motivate the offensive brain trust to cobble together its best game plan and play calling of the season, then I hope Kirby feels the need to keep pushing back against the outside noise.

Give yourselves a pat on the back, peeps.  As far as I’m concerned, you’ve earned it.

it’s possible to be really happy about beating UF, and also concerned about the offense going forward – partially because Kirby seems to want to be pigheaded about running into stacked box just cuz. LSU and its brand new OL still got 100+ more running yards against these guys than we did – don’t hear anyone over there talking about articles of offensive faith made that possible. Oh well fans. Buy tickets at our increasing prices, but if you don’t like what you see on the field make sure to shut your mouth!

Let’s see how well their defense holds up.

Of course we need to continue getting better on offense, in several ways, no argument there from anyone I think. But your comparison of LSU’s rushing total compared with UGA’s is missing a key factor: they didn’t face the 2 headed monster on the FU defensive line. Gaytors’ ILBs and DBs can be worked around and beaten, no way to account for both Grenard and Zuniga at the same time on running plays. You can scheme around one but blocking both away from a runner is almost impossible. They may be a better combo than what AU has on the front line, if not, it is still a chance fr our coaches to plan for how to improve the way we attack them.

That’s right, Mac. Those two ends are beasts and Florida’s defense is completely different with them in the game. The stats show the stark difference.

I’m a run game believer. It’s not the run first concept that concerns me. It is the lack of creativity in the run game that bothers me. When was the last time you saw a Georgia guard pull? Or a FB lead block into the hole? If you are going to try to one one one block 8 guys with 5 or 6 guys you are going to lose that battle most of the time no matter how good your players are.

I pointed this out before the game. FU’s defense average ypc with Zuniga & Greenard out: 9+ vs LSU, 5+ vs SC. When both play the average ypc drops to 1.9.

  3. They threw the ball over the middle more and ran the ball outside for mucho success. When they tried to run it up the middle, they got stoned over and over. Nobody wants UGA to reinvent the wheel, we want them to be smarter about how they try to move the ball. If the coaches and players need us (me) to be the heel, I’ll gladly play along.

I still think the passing game is off kilter. Jake is hitting stop routes accurately, and that’s about it. When throwing crosses, he is behind his receivers on nearly every throw. There are plays where there are no routes over the middle, which is just bizarre play design. Most of his throws are less than 5 yards down the field. His receivers are making him look good with amazing catches (Herrien, Cager) and the stats don’t tell the real story. Something is off. I would love to be proven wrong against Mizzou, Auburn, and A&M.

So Fromm’s performance on third down doesn’t count as “big” plays? He converted 10 or 12 or something similar. Get real. You remind me of a guy in our local alumni group here in PHX, always complaining if the play isn’t perfect. It’s annoying. Guy never played a down in his life.

And BTW, we’ll give you the man-boy award for watching the game with a bunch a gators that you know. BFD. I’ve been to close to 20 WLOCP games going back to ’81 thank you very much. We all knew (at least I did anyway) that when Kirby said he didn’t hear the boos at the UK game because he had headphones on was a bunch of horse shit.

Everyone reads the internet. They knew public opinion wasn’t happy with the passing attack. I’m optimistic that moving forward Jake will have about 30 throws a game. Everyone knows how to stop the dawgs if we continue what we have been doing the last 2 and half years. This game proved, even for a bit, that staff can actually game plan.

Kudos for the staff opening it up a bit.

Booing is such a low-class, boorish move. Georgia fans are great, really great, and don’t do that kind of stuff very often. But it’s cringe-worthy when it happens.

Also, people who think the players don’t feel like they’re being booed are kidding themselves. There’s no such thing as magically isolating the boos to just playcalling or just the coaches.

Auburn struggled against Old Miss last night at home.
What was amazing was the half (at least) empty Jordan Hare Commode. The game actually went down to the last play and the crowd was somewhere else, keeping warm I suppose??
BTW…Plumlee is excellent. That kid is as fast as a rabbit and throws a good ball. Hate it that Georgia lost him to Old Miss, but I understand his reasoning.
Auburn plays smash-mouth…and dirty. Somethings never change. It will take a very good effort by the Dawgs to beat them, but I’m optimistic about it.

The real problem is that Auburn gets a bye week before the GA-Auburn game this year and Georgia doesn’t. That is a big advantage. See South Carolina game.

Hope we dominate them like we did SC, only the 4-0 turnover margin caused us to lose that one. Even then we almost didn’t. If we do that on The Plains, we walk out with another victory over them. Would love that, win and move on. No ugly Ws in that place to me.

    • If we play to our potential, we should win every game left on the schedule. Night game in Athens vs. Missouri. Auburn’s offense has looked more and more constipated as the year has gone on (of course, this is the one I’m worried about due to the West road game curse). A&M will be a good test for us, but we should be ready for them especially since we may need it to clinch the East (if the West road game curse continues). We will thrash Fech in Atlanta.

Honestly, the biggest difference I saw out there was Cager (prior 2 games).

    Like

    • Cojones

And Smart proved his point with Cager back. What point you say? That he knew what we needed and how we had to play with Cager, Kindley and others injured. He proved that the injury toll was there and needed what he saw was a scheme for the players in there. If not for a 4-turnover game, no one would have doubted his ass.

Smart owes nothing to our whining and plays his coaching game however he sees things progressing in practice each week. Ostensibly, that’s why we hired him at a multi-$M salary. The problem results from him having spoiled us in our expectations and we brag before the game is played. Would think this is his lesson plan for this week’s fandom class. When many state a final score guess, it’s built out of hope, but some take themselves seriously, point out what amateurs we really are and when Smart doesn’t meet their arrogant predictions they double down and blame Smart and Coley’s scheming.

Wonder who told Smart what we were doing wrong on D since he needs us to tell him how to coach. Not one rushing TD all year. Those boys have something to stake in the ground that’s all theirs – until someone scores the first rushing TD against us. What will our whining coaching advice be then, Senator?

Kirby always needs to motivate the team. The evidence keeps mounting that he played USCe “vanilla” to accept a loss to help close ranks, create doubt, and put everyone on edge for the rest of the season. “Us” against “Them” is awesome for the locker room.

Yesterday’s offense would not beat Bama or LSU…but Kirby’s building momentum. Improvement each game is what he’s looking for, building to a crescendo in the SECCG and then let what may happen in the playoffs. This is classic Saban but with adding the needed twist of throwing one game a season as Kirby sees going undefeated is too much trouble and headache until we win the NC.

It’s true until proven otherwise!! 😉

I dunno anymore (yesterday’s offense not beating______)…. seems we all said that offense wouldn’t beat Florida either.

I’m resigned to the realization that we may actually have something going with out grind the pace of the game way down strategy…. UF ran for 146 vs LSU but only 27 vs us. They also had about 60 more passing yards as well.

I feel confident that we would be more likely to force LSU into playing our type of game than the other way around.

We haven’t played a good offense capable of putting up 30 points a game the way Bama and LSU can. Is this the D that strangles them? Quite possibly, but if we get in a shootout, this offense is going to need to keep up through the air which comes down to more clutch receiving beyond Cager, which means our young guys need to keep improving which was the #1 worry at the beginning of the season which everybody said “don’t worry” which means all is fine and going according to plan.

        OK, I feel better now.

Well at some point the season goes on long enough where “ain’t played nobody” loses its meaning or simply means “errrbody [must] suck” which makes about as much sense as continuing to freak out about our limitations.

Maybe Joe Burrow or Tua should worry about our defense and how the hell they’re gonna score all those points you assume they’re gonna score.

My only real complaints still center around passing game design.

Our OL is the best pass blocking unit I think we have ever had, we have an experienced QB and a huge commitment to a run game. UF played their safeties within 8 yards of LOS all day.

Why are we only running play action a couple of times a game? Other than that, I liked the game plan and play calling

Don’t get all fired up but Kirby is coaching like a NFL coach. Don’t make mistakes, keep it close and win in the end. With our 5*s this is a good thing. I’m waiting for the participation stats to see how many underclassmen played. It’s only going to get better.

One small gripe, why can’t we use one of our other punters when we want to pen the other team down close. Our regular punter just kicks the hell out of it with no touch at all.

Keeping it close and winning at the end leaves the door open to keeping it close and losing at the end when: (1) refs get flag happy against you; (2) other team gets hot; (3) something unusual happens like a pick-6 or a fumble return. Put the other team away!

Not a small gripe. I still think UGA would have beaten Bama last year (I know, I know; sour grapes) if Camarda had been able to pin them inside the 15 or even the 10 a couple of times; seemed like every time the Dawgs punted, the LOS was just over the 50 on Bama’s side of the field. Field position should have made the difference in that game, in a good way.

  20. With the concerns I have had about the staff this year, mostly with Coley, I give full credit to them for what happened yesterday. All the good and bad of the last few games led to really handling Florida when most doubted. Or most of the media anyway. Credit to Coley and the players for setting Florida up and executing that beautiful PA touchdown that seemed like a culmination of everything. Credit to Smart for really making this program mentally tough and ready to fight.

I think the things that have impressed me since the 2017 season are how he really seems to always have his finger on the pulse of the program and how he and his staff find the leaders. After the first season, there has been a turning point in each season where the staff and player leaders made sure that they were still in position to attain their goals and, imo, that always starts with the HC. Kirby has also done a tremendous job of finding impact transfers and backups and making the most out of them. I believe guys like Herrien have not only greatly improved his own draft stock but is the heart and soul of the kind of program that is highly successful. I don’t think this team is perfect by any means but they’re pretty got damn tough. Look at the the LB and WR who were removed because they couldn’t get with the program and look at who replaced them. A grad transfer and a redshirt freshman who are having really big impacts.

It’s amazing what another win over Florida and putting yourself back in the driver seat will do. Hehe

CKS heard what was said and took heed, there is no doubt.

Game plan included mostly what has been said here, minus the unsuccessful dives into an 8 man box, which was Kirby’s special twist.

Really the most satisfying part was when the game was on the line and you knew CKS’s every basic instinct was to slam that ball up in the line three times and punt, you could see that he knew he had to set aside his ego aside and ditch the impose your will and back-shoulder prayer plan and take what the defense was actually giving them with a pass to a playmaker in space and a pass to a tight end with a mismatch.

As tough as it must have been for him to admit it, he had the humility to take the easy win that was readily available.

UGA coaches can take that arrogance and shove it where the sun don’t shine, especially Todd Hartley. That dude contributes nothing to this staff. Kirby hasn’t won enough to be that arrogant, and I just lol-ed at his insistence that you need to slam the ball up the middle fruitlessly in order to set up the pass. That ain’t modern football anymore. You can pass to set up the run too or just use the pass as your primary attack and run when you please.
