Honestly? They could do a LOT worse than Lane Kiffin. Tallahassee is a four alarm dumpster fire right now after Jimbo left them high and dry and then Taggart did… whatever it is that he’s been doing there. I’m not sure what top tier or second tier coaching candidate is going to risk taking that job right now. Willie Taggart was evidently the best they could do last time, and things are worse now. Kiffin has name recognition, a “cool” factor with recruits, and it’s undeniable that he can coach an offense. He’s got a conference title at FAU. If I were FSU, I wouldn’t be sending him to voicemail.

    • People keep saying that Jimbo screwed FSU and the roster or left the team in shambles. FSU has the 5th best % of blue chip players on the roster. Even allowing for some recruiting busts, Taggart was just plain not effective as a coach. And in this day of the transfer portal, roster holes can at least be addressed if not completely fixed. He should have been humming along in the piss poor ACC immediately with that roster.

That was my thought too. Lane may be a grating personality, but he’s pulled FAU out of the gutter, and I imagine he’s made some valuable recruiting inroads in Florida in the process. At this point he’s got experience in a wide variety of environments, from the NFL to the Nick Saban machine, and while not all of that experience has been positive, he’s probably at least learned something from it. Plus I imagine it would be really entertaining to watch him fuck with Dan Mullen on a regular basis.

I would be extremely wary of the attitude of, “He can’t be as bad as he used to be.” Kiffen failed in the NFL and in the Power 5. I’m all for taking a promising and successful lower-tier coach and giving him a chance. Unless he’s already failed with the chances he’s been given in the past.

The only odd thing about this is that Kiffin had to be the one to float his own name. Usually his countless media surrogates do it for him but they’ve cooled on him for some reason.

I bet it was that 5-7 record last year.

Yeah, that’ll do it. Though this year he’s at 6-3 (4-1). I bet he’ll be extra-motivated now with that FSU job open.

If Taggart had been canned next year, I’d have expected Richt’s name to get some mention. But with his recent health scare I doubt he’d have a shot even if he wanted it, which I’m not sure he does.

He might be the perfect hire, actually. He has relevant experience, knows the state well, and is hungry enough for another big-time job that he’ll probably work at a relative discount. I wouldn’t want him as UGA coach, but being tan, obnoxious, and having a shady past seem like strong selling points in the Florida market.

FSU needs a care-taker coach. If the rumors about Bob Stoops are right, then that’s perfect. First, they need someone to come in right away, so a sitting coach isn’t a good call. Why? Early signing day. They need someone that can be recruiting right now otherwise they’ll have pissed away at least 2 of the last 3 early signing days because of coaching transitions. Second, their president and AD are in their last days in charge. If they can bring in someone short-term to get the culture turned around and keep recruiting moving forward, the next group of institutional leaders can make a more long-term choice. Otherwise, you’ll have the next HC dealing with leadership who didn’t hire him and isn’t invested in him.

They didn’t look good, but if you take the stories from the beginning of the year about the culture problems Taggart inherited at face and consider that the new early signing day/hiring calendar wrecks havoc on a new hire’s ability to recruit in the first year, then I’m shocked Taggart didn’t get another year. I can balance that against the lack of progress they’ve shown, too; because you can see Taggart has improved the program everywhere he’s been. Unless FSU already has something lined up, I think they may have just Baylor’d themselves.

Kiffin at party school FSU and those co-eds would be a hell of a combination. I’m not sure FSU can afford those legal fees in conjunction with Taggart’s buyout.

I’d love to see it. Give Side Show Dan one more thing to worry about.

    Junior: “Hey what about me!”

Taggart was too busy hanging out with the past stars at FSU. Didn’ have time to recruit might miss out on the limelight.

Just today I was talking to a buddy that went to Fresno St as a RB. Kiffin was on the team. He said he was always stirring the pot and basically running his mouth all the time. Always telling everybody who his daddy was.
He said when the coaches wanted to enter a new play into the book Kiffin would tell them “that is a terrible idea – a stupid idea – a really dumb play”.

I can’t stand FSU after the Winston fiasco, but their improvement would be a useful thorn in the side of Florida and Clemson.

Kiffin might be in the top 5 for numerous reasons. I am hearing Norvell’s name a lot, he could also be a top candidate. They need to a call soon, NSD is only about 6 weeks away. They won’t be floating in money after Willy T’s buyout is paid, Junior would be a bargain. He might not be my top choice, but he might the best for an affordable option that wouldn’t be on everyone’s list.

Has the FAU AD expressed his interest in firing Junior? Because openly soliciting an offer from another team mid season probably violates Kiffin’s contract and could open the door to his termination without FAU having to pay the buyout.
